TV streaming service HBO has confirmed it's renewed its adaptation of The Last of Us for a third season, as the second is about to debut this Sunday, 13th April 2025. The announcement was shared on Twitter with a little animation:
Season two of The Last of Us, which looks to adapt at least some of The Last of Us 2, airs this Sunday on HBO and Sky in the UK. New episodes will debut on a weekly basis, with seven episodes in total making up the second season. This means the conclusion will come on 25th May.
In the PS5, PS4 game, there's a very clear break where two seasons of a TV show could be split apart, but we already know HBO has made some changes to how the TV series tells the story of The Last of Us 2. Until we see the new batch of episodes for ourselves, we won't know how HBO has structured the story in relation to telling Ellie and Abby's points of view.
Reviews from select media outlets were published earlier this week, which you can view through the link:

Looking forward to seeing what this season brings to the screen. Hoping we get a few more episodes like the Bill and Frank one where they spin the detail in a way that doesn't run it
Man, we're really about to cliffhang in the movie theater with S3 opening on Abby Day One. That's tough
Was there ever any doubt
Season 2 is sitting at 92% with 51 reviews. Obviously not a definitive metric, but that’s a healthy score.
I don't know want to know if there will be a season 3, they pretty much told us that when season 2 was announced. I want to know if there will be a season 4 as they said the 2nd game might need 3 seasons.
If they say season 3 will cover ALL of game 2 and they don't know about further seasons yet I'd be OK w/ that as well. Season 2 being only 7 episodes, season 1 was 9, makes me think maybe they are spreading things out.
Hopefully they don't spread it out to the point of dragging it along into as many seasons as possible.
@BleedingDreamer
Showrunners have said at most it will be 4 seasons.
@Ilyn I hope for the exact opposite 😃
These shows are so funny to me. They come out with a crowd pleasing first season, then as soon as they do something different, the crowd changes temperature on it all. So they will never be able to make a game quick enough to capitalize on a sudden surge of cultural zeitgeist. It's kind of hilarious.
That will be a whole-in-one for Abby!
