Industrious Japanese emulation house Hamster is bringing a new line of its Arcade Archives catalogue to the Nintendo Switch 2, starting with Namco’s 1993 classic Ridge Racer.
But the iconic System 22 outing will not be playable on the PS5, at least not initially, as the dev’s only announced support for Nintendo’s new machine thus far.
Ridge Racer and PlayStation are obviously intrinsically linked, as the original game was ported to the PS1 early on and instantly became a showcase for the power of Sony’s new console. While this is the arcade version, we’d like to see it on PS5 eventually.
The press release mentions that the new series of Arcade Archives titles will feature Time Attack modes and various other improvements, including multiple save states and VRR support.
We’ll contact Hamster and try to find out if there are any plans to bring this game to the PS Store.
In the meantime, you can play the PSP version of Ridge Racer 2 and the PS1 classic Ridge Racer Type 4 on both the PS5 and PS4 via PS Plus Premium emulation.

Getting a bit worrying all this Switch 2 only stuff today.
@Jrs1 Why it's gaming news just because it's Pushsquare doesn't mean they should branch out and report other news. In todays media is a battle and I welcome the news for everything else means I don't have to go to IGN
just crossing all my digits for a chase hq and super pang AA release!!
@Nakatomi_Uk I'm guessing he means it looks like a lot of these games won't come to PS5...
@Nakatomi_Uk I mean that i hope there isnt going to be a trend of timed exclusivety which i cant stand with third parties.
@Dimey Yip correct 👍
DAMN. I really hope this comes out for PS5. Been wanting an arcade perfect port of Ridge for bloody yonks.
(I'll have to just get out my PSX copy and play that... as well as some Rage Racer...)
I backed up my PS1 CDs ages ago and I really suggest you do the same. You then are not confined in what they decide to re-release but can still buy whatever retro game is up in modern digital stores. And, of course, your games are digitally preserved. I am not sure that PS1 era CDs are that durable.
It's nice to have but it's lacking in content. Revolution or Rage Racer or Type 4 sure but the original. Nah pass.
I'd take anything else Ridge Racer then this. Arcade ports are cool but to me they were justified at the time.
I think later releases or other arcade games would be more appealing to see then the arcade Ridge Racer or is it better then the PS1 port?
To me Ridge Racer original was cool for the time but even compared to other arcade games this one is very much a novelty compared to others out there of arcade ports to offer or have been offered already for arcade archives and I was fine with Tank Tank Tank's design even if reskinned bosses I could at least see enough enjoyment in it solo missions, using all tanks and such or multiplayer modes.
Namco hasn't properly cared about Ridge Racer much over the years, so having 64 or DS or whatever for NSO is something, even 3DS would be nice but otherwise nah pass.
Having RR2 PSP one on PS4/5 is probably the best they have given players I think because of how solid that game is even if a remix of past games it does a fair job besides the 3DS one.
@SuntannedDuck2 Yeah RR2 psp version is good 👍
