How recently did Microsoft cancel the PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day? Apparently very recently.
We all saw earlier today the release’s PEGI rating go live with Sony’s console listed among the platforms. There’s also a SKU for a physical PS5 version rattling around in retailer databases.
And according to journalist Jeff Grubb – who broke this news earlier in the day – an almost-finished build of the third-person shooter is sitting on a hard drive somewhere.
“So yeah, there's a basically finished version of Gears for PlayStation sitting on a drive.”

It’s beginning to feel like this version of the game was probably cancelled within the last few weeks, and with a 6th October release date lined up, it certainly would make sense that the title was close to complete on the PS5.
Xbox has since said that this is not a timed exclusive, implying it will never come to Sony’s console.
Whether it’ll stick to that plan is up for debate, as this is just the latest in a series of flip-flops from the manufacturer, and it’s honestly getting difficult to keep up.
This is actually the second time a Gears of War game has been in-development and cancelled for a PlayStation platform; a PS3 build of Gears of War 3 famously emerged a few years ago.
Are you disappointed the game is skipping the PS5? Or are you just not a Gears guy to begin with? What do you make of this port being cancelled so late in the day? Let us know below.
