When it originally released back in 2010, Yakuza 4 was defined by its four playable characters -- a first for the series. Alongside mainstay protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, players got to experience the stories of charismatic loan shark Akiyama, escaped convict Saejima, and street-smart cop Tanimura. In Yakuza 4 Remastered, all four characters remain nuanced and interesting, but at times, the game struggles to tie all of their adventures together into the kind of cohesive, intense crime drama that you expect from the Yakuza franchise.
In short, Yakuza 4 feels a bit disjointed. Uneven pacing impacts the plot at several points, and Kiryu feels like he's shoehorned into proceedings just because he's the face of Yakuza. Having said all that, even though Yakuza 4 is one of the weaker entries in the series, it's still a cut above the storytelling that you'll find in most other games. Just don't expect it to outdo the likes of Yakuza 0, or Yakuza 6.
When it comes to action, Yakuza 4's a blast. Each playable character has their own unique fighting style, with Akiyama's lightning fast kicks and Saejima's brute strength being particularly satisfying. And in typical series fashion, there are some top tier boss fights on offer alongside a load of addictive minigames -- including in-depth hostess club management.

Oh, I was under the impression this was one of the best Yakuza games. I’ve played 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2 and FotNS so I’ve been tossing up whether to get Judgment or the Remastered Collection. Think I’ll wait for the physical edition with the PS3 box if they don’t hold up as well as I’ve heard.
I finally decided to check out the Yakuza series for the first time last December. After playing the excellent Zero and Yakuza Kiwami, I am all in on playing 4-7 plus Judgement over the next few years. What great games!
@Westernwolf4 Honestly, I found it difficult to go from 0 to Kiwami. It’s a great game but I couldn’t help feeling it was a slight step down from 0. Good thing Kiwami 2 is absolutely incredible. Have fun with that one, it’s a blast.
Il always be thankful for this game for introducing Akiyama. He needs his own game
Great game, but fair review. It didnt live up to yakuza 3 for me and that is in large part due to the narrative structure being split between 4 protagonists. Most games cant get 1 right, let alone stretching between 4. So well done to Yakuza team for making it work so well.
Still working my way through the games i've not played on PS4 - need to get back on 0 soon. I kind of stopped, despite putting around 50 hours into it because i was a little drained on the constant battles as i walked around kamurocho. I maybe focussed too much on the side content too, and was leaving the story alone.
I still have kiwami 1 and 2 and 6 to play too...!!
@ArcadeHeroes One of those games is attempting to redefine what the medium can be. One is a remaster of a weaker entry in a long series.
Mm, I've played a bit of 6, and I can tell you that 4 has a much better story, especially when it involves Saejima Taiga. It may not be strung together the best, but that's because four protags are pretty tough to juggle. The mini-games are great as ever though, and each character having different fighting styles is something 6 can't really compete with, which I actually found somewhat boring at times, comparatively. I still maintain that 4 is one of the more fun Yakuza games, and I think it's certainly better than 1, 3, 6, and of course Dead Souls (haven't played 5 yet though). Most regard Zero and Kiwami 2 as the best in the series, but 4 seems to be somewhere in the middle of it all. Just my personal opinion. A little lower score than what I'd give it, but that's okay.
While I do agree that Kiryu's part feels tacked on, Yakuza 4 has one of the best (if not the best) story in the Yakuza games.
@ArcadeHeroes Please don't derail the comments section. This has absolutely nothing to do with Death Stranding.
@nessisonett Thanks-I am really looking forward to playing 2! (in my previous post I meant 2-7, not 4-7).
Everyone said there would be a huge drop between 0 and Kiwami, but the two games felt so similar to me that it didn’t feel drastic. My main disappointment was that the mini-games were basically the same in both titles, so I mostly skipped them in Kiwami.
I also hated the car chase sections of both games!
@Westernwolf4 Hahaha, try playing the car chase sections on Legend difficulty!
Prior to Yakuza 0, Yakuza 4 was my favourite. I do take Rob's point about some aspects of the story, but I loved the overlapping narratives of the four different characters.
@nessisonett you have played the same 4 as I. Crazy. I'm trying to polish off a couple more Trophies before putting FoTNS to bed and then....
Hmmm Death Stranding and maybe Yakuza 3. I'm kind of bored of the gameplay - having to rebuy all of the good moves gets old going into your 5th game. But then again I can hardly jump straight to Yakuza like a dragon. Decisions decisions.

@themcnoisy See, that’s why I’m looking forward to 4 and 5. Multiple characters means different movesets and not just Kiryu’s same abilities over and over. Plus, the plot/sub stories are mostly what I play for anyway.
+1 for liking the "Mini Review" idea.
Sometimes (particularly on re-releases like this) a small little snapshot review is all we need. And then if the writer wants to take a deeper dive or highlight something they can do a soapbox piece or something.
the game is also censored, so that should be mentions in the cons too.
I'll get the remaster set when it comes out
I loved that you had Kamurocho on multiple levels (ground, rooftops and underground). Most later entries did away with that.
