How do you follow up on the disaster that was 2018's New Gundam Breaker? Well, in the case of Gundam Breaker 4, you simply return to the basics, and remind yourself of what made the series so much fun in the first place. This sequel goes out of its way to keep things focused: you grind out missions, collect parts, beef up your suit, and repeat the process to a point where you start obsessing over the most minute details of your gunpla's design. Gundam Breaker is back, baby!
There is a story to follow that involves making friends and besting comical rivals in a virtual reality Gundam game, but the plot's really just a vehicle for all of the hack and slash carnage that's perpetually unfolding. To be fair, though, some of the characters are quite endearing, and the writing's pleasantly concise — which is a must in a title that places such an emphasis on its addictive gameplay loop.
And boy is it addictive. Granted, it takes a few hours to get properly stuck in as you'll have to charge through a slew of story missions in order to unlock optional battles, but once you're hooked, you're hit with a constant barrage of rewards. Parts, paint jobs, avatars, emblems — it never ends, and so you start spending more and more time customising your precious mech.
The customisation is insane, by the way. While you can settle for just clicking new bits and pieces to your gunpla, more creative players can resize entire body parts and equip crazy accessories. The depth on offer is truly nuts.
Fortunately, the core combat system that backs all of this up is good fun, if a little lacking in impact. With a huge range of weapon types, builds, and special skills to experiment with, the appeal of battle mostly stems from being able to play however you like. And for this reason, online co-op can be a blast, as you gawk at the creations of other players.
Gundam Breaker 4 is a return to what the series does best. It doubles down on its core gameplay loop, offering hours upon hours of fast-paced grinding, topped off with impressively deep customisation and build options. Repetitive, but undoubtedly addictive.

If anyone's got any questions about this one, let me know and I'll try to answer them!
@ShogunRok is it addictive?
/joke
How long is the game and is the end game just to unlock more gear, or what? Is there an actual end, or is it a case of creating a host of different builds?
I wasn't planning on getting this game right away but with all the creative builds I've seen so far got me buying the game eventually lol.
Anyway, spot on review (as expected from the "Lightning Baron", lol).
Definitely the best aspect is the build and it's a lot easier to get the parts that you would want.
Combat wise (though this is me saying this while early in-game) but I notice that the missions are a lot shorter and more straight-forward compared to the previous games
So far, I'm enjoying the game and really liking the more creative freedom compared to previous Gundam Breaker games
Ummm...was your post to answer questions rhetorical? 🤔 😁
@riceNpea The actual story stuff will take you maybe... 20ish hours? Or thereabouts. Beyond that, you can play every single mission on a harder difficulty (with better rewards) so the endgame is really just to grind like crazy and make high level suits.
It's one of those games where there's no out-and-out end goal once you're done with the campaign. It'll all depend on how deeply you buy into the grind.
@Ashina Yeah it feels like a lot of the 'filler' has been cut out of Gundam Breaker 4. Not that Gundam Breaker 3 had much filler to begin with, but 4 is definitely streamlined. It wants you going through mission after mission after misson.
@ShogunRok right, thanks. Not sure if that'll keep my interest. It's not like Monster Hunter then, where I'm trying to optimise gear to beat all the challenges. I'll be able to beat everything long before I've got the best gear. Shame.
This sort of "Return to form" resurgence the series seems to have had here with this title reminds me of WWE2K22 and how that did a simar "back to basics" and succeeded.
I feel kinda old hearing about New Gundam Breaker again for some reason lol glad to see tht we finally have a good localized Gundam Breaker game. Might definitely check it out in the future.
I just want a Gundam that has a epic story and gameplay wise is similar to something like the most recent Armored Core game.
Here is the tough question: This or armored core?
Thing is... i loved Gundam SD battle alliance. I still play it. I tried Gundam breaker 3 but did not enjoy it. The story revolved around gunpla aka toys and SD GBA actually recreated and gave twists on the anime story. Breaker isn't convincing me and i think i would go for Armored core if i wanted a customisation heavy mech game.
Maybe if they actually come up with an original gundam world i could be more interested. Kids playing with their gundam toys against each other is too beyblade for me. Ironic given that you'd expect SD to be the one aimed more at the youngest audiences.
@ShogunRok did u make it out unscathed 😉
