@riceNpea …the Amiga eh…the original?? I’m not sure how popular those were here in Canada. But I know exactly what you mean. I’ve only ever been a console gamer, but I bought a legion go (which I later took back) and it was my first real experience of non-console pc gaming, which really just meant full fledged emulation (tried a bit with my Mac mini to varying degrees of success but have given up on it). I made it through a good chunk of ffvii with certain 7th heaven mods and it was absolutely divine! I’m definitely getting one of the new PC handhelds coming out this year just so I can go back and play some of my favourites like FFVII, LoD, Hot Pursuit 2 and Hitz Pro. And Breath of the Wild modded just changes the game entirely for the better! Super curious to see the Legion Go 2 unveiling on Tuesday at CES.
@Kidfunkadelic83 absolutely true, of Sony and Nintendo. When you’ve been playing since the NES days on, the new offerings are getting a little too familiar. Admittedly a little less true of Nintendo but only a little. At least they are prone to take more risks with new IPs (Astral Chain, Arms etc.). But when you start to prefer the originals to the sequels (I prefer Spiderman to Spider-Man 2; Breath to Tears) you (I) personally just start to lose interest in what they are doing as a whole when what they keep churning out are sequels and remasters of relatively new games or remasters of remasters.
@riceNpea Sony will make a new The Legend of Zelda game before they make a new LoD lol. But man, such a good game! Have never found another game with as satisfying of a battle system; and the simplicity of the whole thing…fantastic. I’ve yet to try the Severed Chains recent update, am holding out until I get a handheld pc to play it on. I think it’ll give the same feels and freshness that the 7th Heaven mod gives to the OG FFVII (who needs the new trilogy with that collection of mods)!
@-Sigma- Do you get the impression that they said this just to make people happy about the news; instead of being like, yeah, we totally screwed up on this one and just wasted years of development?
It's then explained that the full scope of the project was only realised when it entered full production, to the point where the developer could only choose one of two paths: "Become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage."
How else to hide they messed up then to just be like, hey how about we tell our audience that we would have had to become a fully live service studio if we released this game? Then everyone will be happy we cancelled it and totally ignore how long we’ve been working on it and not releasing actual new games?
Personally, I couldn’t care less for ND’s output, so it matters little to me, but reading this post it seems a little disingenuous the way they are presenting this.
I wonder if people who have cancelled their subscription are getting the 30% discount offer. My Premium expires in 12 days and I cancelled it a couple of months ago. I have the option to buy Premium again at 30% off ($132.99 CDN, regular price $189.99). I’m not (sticking with GamePass as I can get it for $90 CDN here) but seeing the mix of results in the comments, that might be, at least, part of what’s going on.
Edit: I also only checked through the app, haven’t checked on console. Also in Canada for what it’s worth; maybe it’s a regional issue, country by country?
@Kevw2006 Oh no not at all man, and it was a totally fair point to make. I will say though, personally, I have less interest in PlayStation and Xbox as a whole these days compared to Nintendo (no question I’d keep the Switch if I could only have one. Wouldn’t even have to think twice about it). And yeah, I don’t know how Nintendo does it. The whole, we don’t do it unless it brings something new to the table can be frustrating sometimes in some respects, but really, I am so thankful they approach games and hardware that way. I mean for example, I love classic Zelda games (Skyward Sword, however, can go die lol Brutal game). Although Breath of the Wild isn’t perfect, (Tears far less perfect than Breath) and I would love a game that harkens back to the more traditional gameplay, I am so glad Nintendo keeps things fresh and interesting, and has lots of variety in their output, within a series and between ips. Origami King is another example. It gets hated on for not being TTYD but man, I’m glad they did something different. What a fun and delightful game. It had me laughing out loud and the changes they made were creative and enjoyable. I’m not sure how Nintendo does it. I won’t die on his hill ‘Nintendo is better than the rest’, since, I mean, we are just talking about video games, but man, I’ll die on this hill all the same lol!
@Kevw2006 Respectfully though, I do disagree about the last point you made. I remember my mom bringing home the NES in 1990 (we were late to the party and getting both the SNES and N64 on Christmas morning during the respective years those systems came out. Nintendo has always been my preferred platform to enjoy games on because many Nintendo first party games are simply delightful. But the weariness I feel from Sony (or even AAA games in general sometimes) certainly is not there at all with Nintendo. It’s funny they churn out similar franchises and games each Gen of their systems (with of course very different and new ips each system too) but opposite to what Sony or Microsoft puts out, their games often feel just as, if not more fun, fresh, and creative than what preceded them. Not every game they put out is a winner of course, but the variety, creativeness, fun that keeps their new games delightful and fun, is something that, from the perspective of a middle aged man (late thirties, who needs to get back to writing his thesis lol), Sony hasn’t had since maybe the PS2 days. Just because Sony is 5 gens in doesn’t mean it has to keep just doing the same thing over and over again. Maybe it’s just the feeling that I am kind of tired of the main experience offered by Sony essentially feeling like I’m just playing something that is in between a game and a movie that has me less enthusiastic at this point about Sony’s offerings. Anyway, I’ll stop with the rambling (or waffling as they used to say to me when I lived in Ireland lol…I do it a lot as you can tell from the length of my comments 🤦♂️).
@Kevw2006 Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I totally understand what you mean and I agree. Luke88 made the point from the perspective of someone new to the ecosystem and gave his impressions. So I really meant my post in support of his (especially seeing how unfavourably his opinion could be taken). The only thing I would say is you would be right that it wouldn’t be fair to say the X is better than the PS5 objectively if I’m using my perspective as a newcomer to Xbox as the standard for making that judgement. It’s just that it isn’t quite what I was trying to say. I mean, at the end of the day, consoles are just big plastic boxes (very big plastic boxes in the case of the PS5, that I suppose aren’t actually boxes lol) that are a means to play games. So personally, for me anyway, I care less about which logo is on the box that I’m enjoying the most at the moment or this gen (which really is the Switch anyway). So I’m not trying to say that Xbox has won this generation or that I’m in or not in the army camp of Sony (like the first comment in this thread). I mean these sorts of comments you have to take with a pinch (and often makes me wonder about what the age or maturity is of the people making some (many) of the comments I’m reading here or elsewhere on the internet). Which is objectively winning or better or some such, an interesting question I suppose for many, certainly on here, is something I’m less concerned to argue about.
Again though, I agree it would be unfair if that was what I was trying to suggest. In light of the whole Sony is demolishing Xbox thing, I was just giving a different perspective as you noted, which I know I’m not the only one who has had such an experience this gen (if you look at posts on Reddit or videos on YouTube etc., and Luke88 too is obviously an example of such too.
@luke88 I didn’t see your first comment, but as someone new to the Xbox ecosystem with purchasing my Series S, and more recently upgrading to the X, I agree with the sentiments and thoughts of your second comment. The main reason why I’m even keeping my PS5 at this point is because of the PS4 games that I already own. This gen on the PS5 I think that I have played two first party exclusive games that I have actually really enjoyed, Ghost (yes, it was a PS4 game, but the PS5 upgrade just makes the game that much better) and Ratchet (which was just a thoroughly enjoyable game) and I can’t recall any third party exclusives (I’ve tried playing FFXVI but on an oled it’s absolutely gross (like car sick gross) because of the instantaneous refresh rate of oled panels, it just doesn’t play nicely with that game). But the rest of the exclusives from Sony (which really are few and far between) feel like games I’ve more or less already played on the PS4. I even just picked up Spider-Man 2 the other day (so started by playing the most recently patched version) and although fun so far, I’m not sure it’s all that much better than the remastered version on PS5 (I have a master series Sony OLED and will say the game looks great in certain respects and just, I don’t know, off or weird in other respects; I certainly prefer the graphics and maybe even overall game of the original and Miles more so far).
I say all of this just to support your point, for someone new to the Xbox ecosystem, the Series X is just a more enjoyable piece of kit to have (by the way have you tried Ori while playing in 6K? On an OLED, just amazing looking and playing game!). The Elite Series 2 I think is the best controller I’ve ever owned. You can get GamePass for cheap through various means, especially compared to PS Premium (which I’m letting expire this month and won’t renew at any tier now that I have GamePass and will just repurchase ST6 and SMB4 on Xbox). Back compat is also really a neat touch (Lost Odyssey is fantastic, which as an old school Final Fantasy fan, I’ve loved). Picked up the Metal Gear 360 collection for cheap, and Red Dead on the 360 too for pennies. Again, echoing your point. For someone who has never been in the Xbox ecosystem, having a Series X makes the whole new gen thing actually exciting (and despite what people say, Xbox has some great exclusives). Especially as multiplatform games seem to run better for most games on the X, which again on my Sony OLED which Sony says was made especially for the PS5, the X games just look fantastic. Whereas the PS5, at least for me, just feels like a PS4 Pro 2 and most of the new Sony first party games just feel like 2.0 versions of their PS4 counterparts, which just goes to your point about the PS5 in practical terms seeming like a simple quality of life upgrade more than anything.
And all of this comes from someone who has owned every PlayStation system since day one of the PS1. Now if there is an actual remaster or remake of The Legend of Dragoon, then I’ll get truly excited about my PS5 (middle aged men and their nostalgia for PS1 JRPGs lol 😂).
As a PS4 Pro 2, my PS5 is fine, and no complaints as a supplementary system to my Switch and Xbox, though it might be the last PlayStation I buy (and have had them all since PS1 launch day).
@xDD90x Right! Thank you! And I realized that it was my ps4 save file for FF VIIR that I was thinking of. I really miss the good olde days when you could use a memory card for save files (N64, PS1 etc.). Simpler times and less headaches for sure!
Yeah, count me as another one who will be letting his (Premium) subscription lapse entirely once it comes due in November this year. Decided to limit myself to just GamePass or PS Plus as I make little use of either (Nintendo is basically free for its online so will be keeping that) and seeing I can get GamePass for $90 CAD a year through Costco and PS Extra is over $150 CAD it’s a no brainer. I’m just going to repurchase the few games I play online on PlayStation for the Xbox (mainly Super Mega League Baseball 4 and Street Fighter 6) and call it a day.
