Since we began running Game of the Year awards on Push Square, we've rarely, if ever, had such a clear-cut winner as Astro Bot. With about two thirds more votes than second place in our top 10, PS5's delightful exclusive platformer has won the hearts of fans and critics alike to come out comfortably on top.
It's easy to understand why. Building on the already excellent foundations of previous entries, including the very warmly received PS5 pack-in Astro's Playroom, this game is a full-throated 3D platformer positively bursting at the seams with ideas. Every moment of Astro Bot is a sheer joy to play, with each stage a treat to experience — it's the definition of all killer, no filler.
The controls are intuitive and simple, the power-ups add fun new abilities to Astro's move set, and the level design is on-point. There's never a dull moment; it's just constantly presenting you with imaginative mechanics and unique moments that are simply fun to experience. Throw on top the flawless image quality, delightful animation, and a superb soundtrack, and you have yourself one of the best 3D platformers to ever grace a PlayStation. It's a blast.
The delicious layer of icing on the cake is the celebration of PlayStation's 30-year history, meaning more than half the Bots you collect are dressed like iconic (and obscure) characters from basically any series you can think of. It's done with such care and attention to detail that we can't help but love it — especially when the franchise-themed special stages are so good.
We struggle to think of anything we dislike about Astro Bot, particularly now that it's been made even better with free post-launch updates, adding time attack levels and a festive playground. The game has charmed so many because it's not trying to be anything more than just that — a game. Consistently creative levels that are fun to play over and over, rewarding progression, immaculate presentation, and leveraging the PS5 platform to its fullest — it's brilliant, and easily among the best games the console has to offer.
Push Square's Game of the Year top 10 is decided by votes coming from internal staff and regular contributors. Our community Game of the Year poll also factors into the result. Feel free to agree or disagree with our list in the comments section below.

Predictable
An Astro-nomical year and a worthy winner. Congrats Astro
Well deserved! Had so much fun playing Astro 🙂
Certainly not the strongest year for Playstation games but Astro Bot is indeed excellent and fully deserves all the love and attention it's had.
I didn't expect it to be that good, took me back to my N64 days when I use to smile more while I was playing games. Congrats Astro Bot, Team Asobi and the spirit of Japan Studio!
There could only be one winner. Astro Bot was easily my favourite gaming experience of 2024, regardless of console, and I’m so happy to see Team Asobi receive the recognition they deserve.
Most overrated game in recent memory. 8/10
This year Playstation got a game it was sorely lacking. A game that is about fun and joy- they don’t make many of those anymore.
It was also an answered prayer. People looked at me in a weird way when I told them Astro’s Playroom is my favourite PS5 game (up until Astro Bot launch) and I couldn’t have hoped for a sequel this good. Now I know there is going to be Astro Bot 2 and I’m overjoyed.
There were a lot of games that were very good in 24, but for me Astro bot just sits above them all.
Lots of fun to play, released to a high standard and looks great, good use of haptics.
Well deserved GoTy
Between this and Final Fantasy Rebirth for me, so glad to see it make the top spot. Well and truly deserved.
Just wish more people would’ve played Astro Bot Rescue Mission all those years ago. Easily one of the PS4’s best games.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2024/02/ps5-sales-touch-55-million-as-sony-breaks-revenue-records
“Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games. But while major projects are currently under development, we do not plan to release any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year like God of War Ragnarok or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.”
Usually Sony exaggerates, but here it was
understating. They probably didn’t know better.
The PS5 needs more joyful games that are easy to pick up and play like this. Most of its big games were darker and required an hour or two per session to make progress
A real shining light within a heavily disappointing generation for PlayStation first party titles.
Rebirth was my GOTY but Astro was a close second, the most unbridled joy I’d experienced in a game since Mario Galaxy 2.
Amazing game. Very fun and have no complaints at all about it; and even if I think that Mario Odyssey did it a little better 7 years ago in a much weaker system, I still love that Sony tried a 3D platformer again like this.
Anyways, It is probably one of the weakest GOTY's ever along with It Takes Two and Overwatch maybe.
All great, fun, innovative games but that just had the luck of competing during the weakest years of gaming in the last 10 years...
Ghost Of Tsushima and RDR2 didn't win, and they are miles better than those 3 previously mentioned. But they had fierce competitors during their years
@Ajfennell77 yes. It was that obvious. If they can give Mario games GOTY every year then Astro certainly deserves it. It does what Mario games do, and much of it better.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner I don’t understand why people say this year was lacking as it pertains to video games. I can name 10+ games, all across many genres, that released this year that are brilliant. People are just dejected for some reason.
Well deserved. It would be my pick too in any non FF7 Rebirth year.
It snubbed FF7 Rebirth but if Rebirth had been no.1, it would've snubbed Astro Bot. What a dilemma...
But still absolutely deserved. Many times I actually had to stop myself from playing any further cause I didn't want to finish the game right away. I wanted it to keep being part of my weeks, fill it with fun joyful moments. Please make a sequel soon. The wait for another one since the Playroom tech demo was pain
Well deserved! Now if only I could discover the dark magic those at the top of the leaderboards have tapped into on the timed levels. Some of those times defy all reason to me!
Where is the "it should be higher on the list option" ?
Lol
Well deserved.
This was my favorite game of 2024 by a country mile. Team Asobi rule.
Definitely my game of the year as well! Have so much fun playing it, just an amazing feel good game 😁
Got this last week and am close to half of the way through. Really enjoying it, and hoping for a sequel (and a new 3D Mario this year!!)
It doesn't quite sit alongside Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Odyssey, etc for me but is very close!
I had fun with it, but I don't think I'd ever play it again, and I'm only playing the additional content to keep that 100%. It wouldn't bother me if there were no more updates. My personal view is that it's an overrated game, but I'm happy for people that enjoy it more than I do.
Definitely goty
Half way through it at the moment and I have to agree, it's wonderful.
Brings a smile to my face and is genuine fun.
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr yes not much different from the previous 2 astrobot games astrobot rescue mission and astros playroom just more astrobot
@Max_the_German
Had a few similar conversations on this site over the last few months - Sony's marketing / messaging has just been really poor this generation imo.
The recent examples being exactly as you stated with this game which Sony seemed to forget was coming (or had no faith when they said what they did) - and its now taken multiple GOTY's; and Pro (Excellent console and a very worthwhile purchase, but very very poor marketing, where they really undersold it).
Fine by me. Started playing and was complete engrossed and addicted until the end. A lovely throwback to 8- and 16-bit platformers, with loads of fun mechanics and sumptuous graphics. Big thumbs up here.
I have not played this but I'm glad it got the top slot because it looks like so much fun and it's really going to annoy all the salty people who have clearly forgotten that games are just meant to be fun..Good job team asobi 👍
Without the shadow of a doubt its the game of the year it made me made have fun with games again.
Its easy to see how much love and passion is poored in this game its a real game with fun om the first place.
No monetization no boring collecting the controller is brought to the next level and is used to perfection.
The game play is a blast we need more of this not more garbage free to play Gatcha, COD part 2397 with monetization and the same maps sold again and again.
@Northern_munkey Get it its such a blast makes mee feel like a kid again.
@DonJorginho Its kinda weird that this game shows what a PS5 is capable of so much fun. Now we need a New Rachet and Clank, Jak and Daxter or maybe a Dark Cloud. 🥲
@Flaming_Kaiser Really does man, just shows that hyper realistic fidelity will never ever top ingenuity within gameplay design and charm.
this is the 5th astrobot game and everyone makes out like its a brand new IP
It's one of the greatest games ever made. Of course it's 2024's GOTY.
Game of the generation so far for me. Absolutely loved it from start to finish. It was the perfect length and every level was such a joy to play. It struck those nostalgia feels in exactly rhe right place. Well deserved.
Not my game if the year but it totally deserves it!
I just need 12 more boys for a perfect run. Awesome game. Takes me back to playing Super Mario on the N64 in the old days. Really well deserved award
Define overrated: this game
@Flaming_Kaiser I will take your recommendation on board and as soon as I have the spare time and have cleared my stupidly large back catalogue I will purchase it.
Only ever one outcome from the moment this game was announced.
I can hear the Astro bot theme playing in for head while reading the article and comments lol. The game deserve all the success.
Got it today in the January sales and played a bit with my 5yr old and so far it's very good. Goty (over everything the industry put out this year) I'm not sure yet. the three games Ive been most invested in this year are helldivers 2, space marine 2 and V rising (not saying they are Goty material but they would be for my personal list). it being push square's Goty is completely predictable yet at the same time deserved. I've seen so much buzz when it came out and the industry needs these mascot style throw backs to plain fun and getting anyone involved.
Of course it's number one as its the best game to release this year easily. After playing it again over Christmas I can safely say it's the best 3D platformer I've ever played, just infront of Mario Odyssey.
Hopefully there's a sequel in the works, but next time it will need to not rely on nostalgia and maybe have some new original characters.
@Jay767 I know what you mean, that tune is seriously stuck in my head its so good, i even catch myself randomly whistling it from time to time lol
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr 100%.
It's my game of the generation so far. I friggin love it.
Gorgeous looking, runs smooth as butter and plays like a dream.
Game of the generation, fact.
Oh yes astro bot is the right choice for the number 1 spot.word up son
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr @scoobdoo Every game is considered overrated by someone. What one person calls a masterpiece, might not appeal to others.
@SoulChimera I'd be down to play rescue mission if it was more easily accesible to play
I understand why people have it for their GOTY but I wish it was a bit more difficult or more exploration focused like their Christmas level. I didn't love this game nearly as much as Playroom and I was really excited for this
Big congrats to Team Asobi - a profoundly distinctive PS5 game achieving something only PS5 tech can deliver. This will help people see a more fully formed PlayStation 5 generation of games when arguing.
Playing through it now and I've loved every minute of it (except To the Beat, that level can just do one). Platformers aren't a favourite genre of mine but this game is up there with the likes of Rayman Legends and Shovel Knight as the best of the genre for me.
The correct choice Astro is Playstation Jesus now 😅🙌
@Northern_munkey Totally worth it man, you should treat yourself. This (and Stellar Blade) reminded me of my early gaming years (Mega Drive and PS1 then PS2) for the sheer fun and no worries about playing. And I'm generally not into these games, as my Fanatec setup and 'shelf of Gran Turismo' will attest to.
For me it was either this or Stellar Blade. Not so much this year (last year?) has pulled me away from grinding out some incomplete trophy lists, but I played this with the joy of a child. Although never got around to finishing it. Soon. Probably.
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr I'm sure there's at least one 8/10 game that you absolutely love that is probably overrated as well
@Northern_munkey
In reference to your 1st comment : The number of times I "died" because of messing about with something in the game too much (eg cutting up surfaces you are walking on), or completely losing my attention when fighting a boss or enemies due to a mannerism or animation making me laugh or watch when I should have been concentrating!
My wife has almost fully completed this thing. She doesn't play much, so this is high praise
Myself who's especially loved Super Mario Galaxy (1 especially) as my favourite 3D platformer, I'll admit Astro has officially taken that crown now.
All trophies 100% and no regrets whatsoever. A true platformer masterpiece.
Lol at some salty people calling this game "overrated".
Anwyay. Well deserved for GotY but sadly Hermen doesn't give a d*mn about this game. What he wants is more live service games like Concord 🤦♂️
Definitely my favorite Game of the Year. Just pure fun from beginning to end.
Good game indeed, need to finish the very last level for plat, but too hard for my slow reactions 😅 (damn flying birds can get stuffed!)
Hopefully Sony will take note that the players do indeed like this sort of game and will sanction a new Ratchet game! 🙏🙏
I just think its funny that a remastered and downgraded game from 2018 won game of the year in 2024, no one gave it the time of day when it came out.
I loved Astrobot when it came out on VR and truly thought it was the next evolution of gaming, but once it goes on a flat screen it's just mario on a PlayStation.
@Fishnpeas - I thought the same after seeing Half-Life: Alyx, that it was a step forward for video gaming as a whole, but unfortunately, it seems very few (admittedly myself included) actually play VR games regularly and so these games tend to get overlooked in favour of more ‘traditional’ video games.

Just got the Platinum and yeah, I can see why this is GOTY. An absolute joy to play from start to finish, and a wonderful way to cap off PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.
I only wish Square weren’t quite so stingy and at least allowed Cloud and Sora into the game (other FF and KH characters would be nice as well, but those two are particularly big absences). Other than that though, this is an excellent follow-up and realisation of what was already a pretty good (if small) game (and presumably the original VR game as well).
Astro’s Playroom was probably my fav game this generation- which would make you think I would be extra excited for this one. However I’ve held off because I generally like to experience completely new games as I don’t have a lot of gaming time these days.
So my question for anyone is if this feels very samey, or is it different enough from playroom to evoke a strong reaction (like if playroom was my goty back then, then would I really feel this way again?)
@GoatFace04 They need to port it to PSVR2. If you mean to drop the VR side, that’s what gave it the magic. It’s unbelievable how good that game is in VR.
Astro Bot Sweep 🔥🔥🔥💪💪💪
@gollumb82 "This year Playstation got a game it was sorely lacking. A game that is about fun and joy- they don’t make many of those anymore"
Sackboy and Ratchet and Clank???
B......but Wukong director wrote his acceptance speech 2 years ago!!!
An absolute blast of nostalgia and fun 🤩
It’s really is something how quickly Senua's Saga: Hellblade II was forgotten about 🪦👀
I really liked the Push Square's top 10. From my side I hoped to see WuKong in this list too but so many good games this year.
The list has generally been disappointing, but at least the rightful winner is in its rightful place.
I had a blast getting the platinum trophy. Now give me an Ape Escape Remake done by Team Asobi and a new Jack and Daxter.. I really enjoyed that Ape Escape level... genius
I have just finished the main part of this game and it was such a joy to play.
I have one thing left to do and that is the level above the statue... and it is kicking my backside!
@Northern_munkey Totally understandable i just stopped my free to play game Gems of War as a thing i want to stop doing in 2025 and just enjoy games again.
I dont want to be stuck in job like gaming experience anymore to start clearing by backlog faster and start enjoying games again and Astrobot gave me that Joy back.
The game is not perfect its just fantastic fun and it looks great and you can see its made with love by a fantastic studio.
Its a game to be played and enjoyed and that controller is made for this game it seems.
A lot of studio's seem to forget that a game has to be fun in the first place.
I recently watched a YouTube video compilation of various streamers watching the game of the year award being handed out. Most of the streamers were really surprised that Astrobot won, and many were either disappointed or upset that one of the other games didn’t win. That said, seeing all the love PushSquare and its users have shown Astrobot since the game’s release, I figured Astrobot would be a shoo-in for the award. And, ultimately, I was surprised so many of the streamers were surprised or upset.
Was Astrobot’s win really that big of an upset?
It's not often that a game i have zero intentions on playing is rated #1. Astro is just not a good enough design for a mascot. It looks like some royalty free mascot from a cheap commercial.
@DonJorginho That is why i fondly remember my SNES and PlayStation 1 gaming its was about having fun.
@SoulChimera The whole split of PSVR and PSVR 2 to me is weird
