Nintendo has finally pulled back the curtain on Switch 2, after a long and arduous build-up which has almost had our colleagues at Nintendo Life in straight-jackets.
The headline news here is that the console seems like a compelling iteration on its outstandingly successful predecessor, with comfortably enough horsepower to run PS4 era games.
But as we write this in the aftermath of the platform holder’s presentation, it doesn’t feel like the company’s done anywhere near enough to appeal to multiformat gamers.
While there are a couple of tentpole exclusives – like the new sandbox-style Mario Kart World and the blissfully creative Donkey Kong Bananza – the rest of its offering right now appears to be relying on multiformat ports.
Nintendo has an unrivalled stable of first-party developers, of course, so we’re expecting that narrative to change rather swiftly. But of the Switch 2’s announced launch titles thus far, more than half of them are ports of old PS5 and PS4 games.

All of these outings will be new to the Switch audience, of course, but for anyone looking at this through the prism of PlayStation, it’s hard to get excited about experiences like Hitman: World of Assassination and Yakuza 0 when they’ve already hit bargain bin prices on the PS Store.
They’re great games, of course – but we’ve already played them to death.
It’s also hard to appreciate right now just how close the Switch 2 is going to be to the PS5, and whether it’ll be capable of running contemporary titles like, say, GTA 6.
Sony has mostly had its own way these past few years, as the Switch was generally incapable of running the PS5 and PS4’s biggest games. But if software is available day-and-date on the Switch 2 moving forward, that might change the narrative around PlayStation’s platform.
It’s worth pointing out that at $449.99 for the console, Nintendo’s newest machine is priced about the same as a PS5 Slim and Astro Bot bundle. The PS5 Digital Edition is actually cheaper at $399.99.

In addition, the PS5 includes 1TB of storage space, while the Switch 2 has just 256GB. And you’ll need a subscription to use features like party chat on Nintendo’s machine, which are available without PS Plus on Sony’s system.
In that sense, even though the PS5 is unprecedently pricey for a console that’s now five years old, it’s actually very competitive compared to the brand new Switch 2. Of course, they’re entirely different products: one is a stationary system while the other’s a hybrid which can be played portably.
The real kicker for Nintendo today, and the topic that’ll be discussed a lot, is the price of its tentpole title, Mario Kart World. At $79.99 in the United States and even more expensive physically in Europe, this sets a new precedent for game pricing, and it’s a move which could end up raising prices on the PS5 as well. Currently, major Sony exclusives retail for $69.99 at launch.

One other thing pertinent to PlayStation fans is the announcement of a Switch 2 exclusive from FromSoftware, The Duskbloods. Artistically, this looks a lot like Bloodborne, although further announcements have since mentioned it’s actually a multiplayer game.
Sony fans will perhaps feel a little salty at this reveal. Not only is the PlayStation maker a stakeholder in FromSoftware’s parent company Kadokawa, the platform holder’s also been reluctant to do anything with the Bloodborne property over the past decade.
Demon’s Souls ultimately evolved into the multiformat Dark Souls when PlayStation fumbled the legendary PS3 game, and now it feels like a similar situation is unfolding yet again – although we do need to know more about what The Duskbloods actually is until we can say for sure.
All that aside, it’s still hard to say what kind of impact the Switch 2 will have on the PS5. At the moment, it genuinely feels like an expensive way to play existing games.

But that will change, make no mistake. The hardware will sell and Nintendo already appears to have all of the major publishers on board.
Until we start seeing more first-party stuff and day-and-date multiformat releases, though, it all just feels a bit underwhelming. That’s our takeaway for the time being, at least.
What are your thoughts on the Switch 2? Do you think it’s going to steal market share from Sony, or is it going to occupy a secondary system slot like the original Switch? Will you be playing any of the many third-party ports on the new machine? Let us know in the comments section below.

Game fandom can be such a funny thing. Nintendrones make fun of all the remasters Sony has done yet squeal in glee when Nintendo does the same. Xbots say that consoles and exclusives don't sell anymore, but then say Nintendo is "different" despite them selling an awful lot of consoles and exclusives. PlayStation fans fret about Sony raising game prices due to lack of competition, but then Nintendo beats them to the punch.
Switch 2 games may cost $80. Insane.
The Switch 2 is the perfect console if you’ve only been on the Switch 1, because you’re getting access to so many third party big hitters on day one that you never had access to before.
But along with the awful pricing of first party games (£75/$80 for the standard edition of Mario Kart World physically) and the barren first party lineup on launch compared to past generations, it’s probably an easier generation than many to miss out on launch if you play on other platforms.
I’m sure by 2026/2027 the Switch 2 will become a must buy console for all gaming fans, but it all depends on what games come along by then.
The FromSoft game seemed like an amazing pickup until I found out it’s another MP extraction game, I’ll pass on that.
The Bloodborne spiritual successor looks cool but I'm not buying a console for one video game lol
It was a mixed announcement, but i'll be there Day 1 for all the Exclusives (including FromSoft's The Duskbloods).
I've also been holding off playing and new Switch 1 games for the past year or so in the hope they would get an upgrade and they do. But they totally had me at Zelda BOTW and TOTK upgrades.
The Switch sold a tonne to gamers who are more casual. It had a unique concept and was pretty cheap.
The console price is fine in my view but these games are no longer an impulse purchase and for me this will damage sales hugely.
There is just not enough here for the masses to pay a premium over.
I don't expect it to surpass 80m units without a price cut to games and the console.
I do want to make clear that I know how amazing Nintendo are and there'll be PLENTY of original titles on the Switch 2 in no time at all.
But we can only reflect on what they presented thus far, and it was mostly games I've already played to death.
I have like 400 hours in the Hitman games, I'm not buying it again. If I spent more money on Hitman right now, it'd be to play the awesome new VR mode.
Switch 2 will be a big success no doubt but the lack of an interesting lineup compared the first 9 months of the previous console means it feels less of a must have system. Plus the high price for games isn't going to sit well with Nintendo's casual/more family oriented audience.
@themightyant seen anything on the price of those upgrade packs yet?
I'm intrigued as to where they pitch that. The £10 Sony upgrades have tempted me in but I'm not sure I'd go much beyond that.
@Dragonaged That is for the digital version of Mario Kart World. The physical version in $90. God damn insane is what it is.
It is fine for more social gamers, especially younger. I have no interest in social features at all. Other than these things like chat and game sharing, I don’t see anything other than a slightly more powerful switch.
@Medic_alert No. Only that they will be included in Switch Online + Expansion, similar to how DLC was on Switch 1. Separate pricing not announced yet. They've added quite a few features, even if it's weird app stuff I don't want so it may be more than i'd like. But it's Zelda I'll pay it. They have me there, it's my favourite series. The cynical side of my brain thinks these will be priced high to upsell people towards the subscription.
But there are also FREE upgrades going out for games like Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Link's Awakening, Matrio Odyssey, Pokemon etc. so it isn't all paid.
Selfishly, I hope Nintendo's choices here knock them down a few pegs like in the Wii U era. That was actually weirdly a great time to be a Nintendo fan, mostly from an economic standpoint, as you had very affordable Nintendo Selects and Club Nintendo offerings to build up a decent game library at a bargain.
@get2sammyb also when they showed off Hitman specifically the framerate looked off. Maybe it was the stream acting up at that particular moment but not a good sign.
I was interested in the system as the original games look great for it but the price was a reality check for me. I barely play my Switch as it is so why rush to get the new system, especially when my backlog is massive at this point.
i was ready to preorder the switch 2 but there is no reason after this direct, if I got it correctly:
I will get the Switch 2 but earliest on Christmas, so far only three games are interesting for me.
@themightyant Those upgrades were my biggest desire for the Switch 2. Might try Link's Awakening and Echoes of Wisdom for the first time now that they'll be upgraded. Same for Tears of the Kingdom.
Hopefully the from software game is timed exclusive.. but I'm not sold on switch as I rarely care to play anything mobile.
@AdamNovice I dunno, man. I wouldn't say Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Air Ride, and Hyrule Warriors are significantly less interesting than Zelda, Mario, and Xenoblade. Nor would I assume we know the full 2025 lineup.
Steam deck is my mobile choice. Switch hasn't got much hope beating that on 7 month deployments at sea.
If we are talking only about third party support. To this day Wukong doesn't have a release date on xbox because of the series S and we are talking about a "last year game". The more the time passes the less or worst the ports will be. Not like Nintendo cares tbh.
It feels very early PS5-ish at the moment. Ports and upgrades with a couple of exclusives.
Just like my feeling towards the PS5, getting one day one feels low priority, but it's been a few years since PS5 released and I still don't feel the need to get one. Switch 2 I will buy within the next year or so.
Mario Kart is a system seller for sure.
I'm not interested in multi-platform games such as PS4/PS5 ports.
Most Switch owners outside of young children (who buy very few games anyway), own it as a second console.
I'd play my multi platform games on my PS5 Pro/Portal, PC etc.
I'm only interested in playing EXCLUSIVE games on the Switch. If there aren't the exclusives, I wouldn't waste £450 on it.
I definitely need to see more.
At the moment the main potential selling point is that my Switch 1 games won't be as jerky.
I own Tears of the Kingdom but have never actually loaded the game as I wanted to wait until it could maintain a lofty 30fps!
Games like Age of Calamity might actually be worth buying.
So they’ve designed a console for last gen games basically
@PloverNutter no the stream was acting up at times, I saw it happen lol
@Dragonaged I heard it’s cheaper digitally (bundle and without bundle) apparently. Seems this 80 dollar price is for physical copies.
Nintendo has a jinx that any machine they call a "successor" will never surpass its predecessor, but to be honest, I don't think the Switch 2 will surpass the Switch 1.
Switch 2 has a solid 2025 lined up but that's it. The machine will sell out this year thanks to early adopters no matter what, so it doesn't really matter. Next year is when they're going to need to start pumping out software that draws in the mainstream consumer.
It will probably outsell the PS5 over its lifetime, and have a better lineup of 1st party exclusives in the end due to reduced development costs as was the case with Switch 1. I'm not sure it matters much to Sony, they consider themselves in a different market segment, but fanboys will squabble over that. But as always the best combo is both, a Switch + Playstation gives you access to essentially everything especially now that Xbox is multiplat.
@anoyonmus It's $80 physically/digitally in the US. In Europe, the physical versions cost even more.
@ButterySmooth30FPS Totally agree. I haven't actually played any new game on Switch for over a year because i've been holding out on getting upgrades. I own Echoes of Wisdom but it plays like ass.
TOTK and BOTW are the dream though. All I need now is a complete Xenoblade series upgrade and i'm done till 2030
@get2sammyb Hmm I see.
£75 for a Mario Kart game is pretty insane. That's my headline takeaway
Whereas Breath of the Wild was an instant system seller for Switch because it took the game world to another level (although i actually bought the Wii-U version first) I look at the Mario Kart game and i can't really see the graphical upgrade over Switch Mario Kart - which looks great. The open world game will be on a different scale, but honestly, i'm not getting the urge to adopt this instantly. interesting to see if they pursue a dual release strategy for Switch 1 and 2 in the next couple of years. But also, Portal has kind of changed my gaming habits....
Imagine paying $80 dollars for an almost ps4 era looking game, and remaster/remake at that insane, yet they'll eat it up like they didnt take the piss last few years about sony doing it
Playstation have nothing to worry about, most of the newer games won't come to the Switch 2, games like GTA 6, Monster Hunter Wilds, Persona 6 and the new Call of Duty. Switch 2 seems to be getting PS4 version games so it makes sense it will be getting those ports that got announced today. Also because Nintendo are always 4-5 years behind in a gen once the PS6 comes out there's no way it will run the newest games. But let's be honest the majority of Switch owners are there for Nintendo's exclusives.
@anoyonmus just checked the trailer for Hitman posted online and the framerate still looks off at times so not the streams fault
@get2sammyb No mention of Drag x Drive? I think it looks very cool and seem to be made by the ARMS team, which was great.
The game pricing is insane and double what I pay for Switch 1 games. If there's no discounts to be found I'll end up only buying the mainline Nintendo games and everything else on PS5.
Metroid Prime is probably the only game I'd even consider at those inflated prices...
@OorWullie actually that did look quite cool when I saw the mouse controls. Think it looked a lot better than ARMS anyway!
@roe Only £35 if bought with the console. £75 is a crazy price for sure. Hopefully the Donkey Kong price is the standard price. I expect Zelda will likely match the MK price though.
I'll buy one as I can afford it, the hardware itself looks very good. But only game I want, if it even counts, is the Zelda BOTW upgrade. But more will follow...
I take it you all saw the utterly disgusting game pricing that Nintendo is charging right? It is even charging you for the game they’ve made to demo the system and it’s controls.. Sorry but I refuse, even though I can, to pay THOSE prices for games.
@Mikey856 Ignoring the preposterous idea that the sole goal of the Switch 2 is to run PS4 games, that there's already PS5/Series (Split/Fiction, Borderlands 4, Cyberpunk Not-Broken-Edition, EA Sports, 2K) games coming to the Switch 2 is evidence enough to call this comment nonsensical.
@get2sammyb When you think of all the big $$ AAA multiplayer projects Jim Ryan & Hermen Hulst greenlighted it seems a tad odd they failed to pursue another From Soft collab & yet Nintendo have.🤔 Oh well, unlike the outcry if this had been a PS exclusive, you won't hear a peep being Switch only!
As for the hardware itself, much like the Switch OG,still incredibly stingy on storage, but much like the addition of Gamecube titles being also paywalled like most of their other "classics" behind subscription only,Ninty acolytes just praise them & pay up no matter the premium! 🙄
Not saying they don't make good games. Just never understood a mindset that allows them to charge premium prices & never discounting their first party titles unlike others!
All I see with the Switch 2 is Nintendo completing their transition to a full blown AAA company, and I don't mean that as a compliment. The difference is everyone in games media is too scared to really call them out for it.
@RoomWithaMoose Mario Kart will be big of course and DK looks great but a Kirby racing game is an odd one next MK and a third Hyrule Warriors game is fine but not up to the hype levels that people might have hoped for.
@UltimateOtaku91 I really would not assume any upcoming Japanese release is off the table for Switch 2. I also wouldn't assume any upcoming Microsoft release is, either.
Probably not GTA6 (but, you know...could happen). Definitely not Black Myth, or most cutting edge games from non-Japanese or Western markets. But Wilds S in a year's time? Very easy to imagine.
Parents. If your kids want some of these older games and a switch 2 for Christmas, you'd be better of just getting a second hand PS5 and a massive bundle of games. Or a new PS5 and a massive bundle of second hand games. Or a new PS5 and a massive bundle of new games on sale.
If the Switch is becoming a proper console console it is going to be much cheaper to go Sony. Which is crazy to say, but it looks to be the reality.
Between Mario Kart World and the inclusion of game cube games to NSO there's enough there to warrant a day one purchase for me.
Then Donkey Kong a little further down the line
@AdamNovice Sure. But, again, I wouldn't say the S1's first year was remarkably better or more interesting. In fact, if you look at everything besides BotW and Odyssey, it's easy to argue it was pretty weak.
Will we get a BotW-level release this year? Probably not. But I would argue gaming as a whole hasn't had a BotW-level release since, besides maybe Elden Ring. And, more importantly than that rather subjective matter, I'm not at all convinced Nintendo doesn't have something big set for the holiday.
Said elsewhere, the console is priced attractively for the upgrade.
The game prices? Not so, families are already struggling let alone without a large increase. I think this will hurt Nintendo.
How many parents can splash 75 on a new Mario?
@Ravix Though I'm down with the S2, I actually agree with this. Certainly, a S1/PS5 combo has more to offer than a S1/S2 combo.
@RoomWithaMoose And all those games in the Direct presentation LOOKED like PS4 games too, you could easily tell they are lower quality versions of the PS5 or PC versions, even PC handhelds run them at higher quality.
Only reason I'd buy a switch 2 is for an exclusive monster hunter other than that there's nothing I'd be interested in
The LED screen is the biggest letdown. Unless it has, at the very least, excellent local dimming, brightness, color and contrast, i'm not interested. And I bet it won't have, they chose to go cheaper on the panel otherwise it would have been OLED from the start.
Maybe I'll consider it if they refresh it with an OLED version after a few years.... maybe.
@S1ayeR74 Are we surprised a portable Nintendo console isn't running games like it's a PS5? Are their no power levels between a PS4 and PS5?
@PloverNutter hmm I see.
@RoomWithaMoose yeah, it very much depends on the games that will be played on it. I think a lot of people will get buyers remorse if they pull the trigger early and then realise they don't play the types of games now available. And if they do play those type of games, then there is many ways to play those games already.
If you are fully part of the in-house Nintendo game ecosystem it will also probably be worth waiting for some more games to be available (of that type) Whereas something like upgrading to a PS5 from PS4, you upgrade and the third party games you are already interested in are coming out on the platform endlessly anyway so the lack of first party doesn't matter as much because of the sheer volume of choice available.
But if you love Mario and Animal Crossing, is Fromsoft going to make a replacement for that while you wait.... No they are not 😅 but those games you already play won't suddenly become crap on the Switch 1.
It makes it very interesting to see how much the casual gamer goes for it right away, beyond the impulse buys (Praise to them for calling it Switch 2 to help with that), and how many will wait and think about whether they really need it to play party games and casual platformers.
No doubt enthusiasts will be all over it, regardless.
People were saying that the Switch 2 would save gaming, I think they meant it would save publishers.
I don't expect the Switch 2 to have really any effect on PlayStation. At this point they exist in parallel lanes. Maybe a few sales that might have been a PS5 turn into NS2 sales, but I largely feel like most people are tied to an eco system and brand, for better or worse.
I think it's likely I'll get a NS2 eventually. I got a Switch Lite 3 years into the Switch life cycle and I can see myself getting one of these once it has a larger library of Nintendo games and there's possibly a price cut or hardware revision.
Fromsoft exclusive will shift numbers. Especially considering it looks like bloodborne 2 (which Sony seem to have completely given up on)
One it looks great but I don't really see the need for many of the features. But the price tag at $630, $700 with Mario Cart is comparable to the ps3 launch price. I doubt I would ever get a switch 2 I'd rather go for either a PS6 or the next Xbox.
@Medic_alert
Yep switch had BOTW and then October Mario Odyssey and also games like arms etc in between.
After 8 years I expected a better launch line up.
Then again a new Mario 3d game could still come in say November this year.
DK game looked a bit mmmmm maybe, but need to see more.
MK world did not mention actual racing online like in MK8 when you gain and lose points etc.
And still no date for Metroid prime 4.
Sony doesn't see Nintendo as a threat. I don't know why this article was even made.
Sony has absolutely nothing to fear. GTA 6 will overshadow pretty much everything else, and that game isn't coming to the Switch 2. Especially since Sony has the far more powerful and cheaper console.
I think there will be some high fives handed out at PlayStation HQ again today. 😂
One of the most underwhelming console reveals I can remember.
If you’re a Nintendo only player then a lot of those ports will be nice but if you’re not then the show had practically nothing except Mario Kart and I’ve not played Mario Kart in almost 20 years.
@Boxmonkey I am not so sure. Duskbloods isn't a typical FromSoft game. The description says it is a multiplayer game, not a story driven game with multiplayer elements like their other games. Until we see more my inclination is that it will be like Nightreign (which we don't know how people will react to just yet since it has not released) and Let It Die (which was not received well)
I just can’t believe the PS5 (digital) is now cheaper than a Switch, thats nuts
@themightyant I hadn't seen that about the online pack.
That softens the blow somewhat I guess - especially as I'm unlikely to play both of them right through again.
Hmmmm, going to be interesting to see how this gets received in the next couple of months/years.
@PloverNutter It’s 8 player PvPvE with everyone competing to claim the “First Blood”
People crying about Astro bot launching at 60 bucks are going to freak out when the next 2d/3d Mario is 80-90.
Alot of the switch threat was just heavily neutered. Game prices 80/90 dollars and the hardware is no longer a cheap family friendly option which got a lot of users because of. They will lose alot of family sales and people buying as a secondary console to ps/xbox/pc
What is the drama exactly? This is the exact same situation we've had since the original Switch launched.
One thing that people don’t seem to be mentioning is the fact that Nintendo will sell digital copies of games much cheaper than hard copies. That’s a win for the industry in general! We’ve been absolutely ripped off for years paying the same or more for digital.
I’m not sure what to make of it all. I don’t think we’ll know the impact for another year, but the early signs are that the Switch 2 might be slow coming out of the gate. I’d never underestimate the power of Mario Kart though. People might be surprised how many systems it will sell on its own.
Still, I have no doubt that many Switch owners will be excited to play FF7 Remake, Hitman, Cyberpunk 2077, and Yakuza 0. Not too dissimilar from PlayStation fans who are anxiously anticipating getting to play Gears of War or Halo. Really old games, but when you get to play them on your console of choice it feels different, I suppose. The difference is that I’m not sure the average Nintendo gamer has interest in gritty Western properties like Cyberpunk. Or even in FromSoft types of games. Do we know how well Witcher 3 and Dark Souls Remastered have sold on Switch?
The SteamDeck and PS Portal have blunted ‘portability’ as a draw for buying these games a second time for the Switch, so it will only be those locked in the Nintendo ecosystem who will get excitement about playing one of these games. Whereas there’s more overlap with the Xbox fandom and the PlayStation fandom, and the Western action games are closely associated with both consoles.
But I guess the same could have been said about Astobot (a Mario imitator) coming to PlayStation, as it’s not the type of game that usually is associated with the brand and yet it’s done extremely well. But it’s a new game from first party, not a recycled one playable on another console for the last 3 years. A better comparison would be to see if old Mario or Donkey Kong games would sell on the PS5 and I don’t really know. Maybe?
@Boxmonkey They’re not charging less for Digital, they’re charging more for physical.
If Sony come out tomorrow and say Physical PS5 games will now cost $80 and Digital will be $70 are you going to call that a win for the industry?
I hate to be that old guy, but to everyone losing their mind about $79.99 games, um, yeah, Final Fantasy 3/6 for SNES was $79.99 MRP in 1994. Just a little perspective!
Yeah the prices suck. But let’s be honest here. This was going to happen anyway. Everything is more expensive.
$450 for a console with a measly 256gb? $80-90 for a game when we know what games bring for the most part already. No freakin' way Nintendo.
@Boxmonkey that’s not a win at all. They’re making physical more expensive, but they are not reducing the price on digital. Who is winning there?
I haven't been a Nintendo guy since Sony won me over with PS2. I've owned every Nintendo console aside from WiiU but I won't be buying Switch 2. My Switch has been in a box for almost 3 years and I have no interest in anything it has to offer.
@illegalmonkey Nintendo will get 0 complaints! For some odd reason, Nintendo is allowed to get away with things the other console makers can never get away with. Sony raised the price of a game $10 but offer sales within 3-4 months and people lose it. Nintendo sells decade-old games at full price and it's endearing. I dunno...
Curious to see how big the file sizes are for the games….cuz that internal memory sure doesn’t seem like it’ll go very far and they really really want you to go digital. So out of the gate if you have to upgrade your memory, you’re talking almost 600 bucks after tax
Switch 2 is not even more powerful than the ps4 pro.and ps5 pro got a 2tb compare to switch 256 gb.and ps5 got more third party.and the switch games is 90$ and 80 dollars.for they're games.its ridiculous. Word up son
PS5 should continue to do OK in Japan if Switch 2 continues to avoid the Gatcha games like Genshin and Infinity Nikki. Maybe they'll come, but not today.
Graphically the Switch 2 still looks pretty rough fir most 3rdparty games. Elden Ring and Split Fiction looked playable fir a portable, but I doubt anyone would trade in their PS5 for a Switch 2 at home.
Fortnite did look similar to the PS5 version. I've tried playing Fortnite on my Switch both handheld and docked and it's so ugly it makes it nearly unplayable.
I'm very curious about Cyberpunk. I think we all remember Sony refunding PS4 money b/c the game was broken beyond repair. If Switch 2 can actually play it that's a win vs PS4 and it closer to being a PS5 competitor. Not on par w/ PS5, but it really doesn't have to be as many 3rd party PS5 games still have to run on the Xbox Series S, so maybe Switch 2 can get close enough to that.
Switch 2 may have some 3rd party problems when there are only PS6 and Xbox Prime games, but that's probably 5 years away at least, so no worries today.
@Boxmonkey The digital games are either costing the same or more than their competitors' physical games. This means Nintendo isn't giving a discount for buying digital but rather adding a mark up for buying physical
Apparently the battery life is “2-6.5 hours” which is Steam Deck territory(actually worse as Steam deck was officially 2-8 hours)
The price of the system and the games are insanity. This is what happens when X-Box fails: Nintendo thinks they can just charge anything they want for their portable PS4 (and they will almost surely get away with it).
I only play games at home on the couch, and the only game that I am even remotely interested in is Metroid Prime 4 and I,m fine playing it on my dusty original Switch.
Absolutely no way am I spending more money on a Switch 2 than I did on my beloved PS5! Sony has nothing to worry about from me.
@Majin_Deicide I feel bad for Bloodborne fans. Surely FromSoft will release this on PS5 as well!
@Cornpop76 Totally agree. I'm floored that they didn't show a Mario game, and that the Metroid Prime 4 game is not a Switch 2 exclusive.
I'm sure someday a new Mario game will come out and I will have to buy this system to play it, but I won't feel bad at all to wait for a few years.
@Smeddy i paid an ungodly amount maybe $70 for strider on the sega genesis. I loved that game though.
Everyone knows what happens with Nintendo consoles. After every win there is an enormous failure… 🫣
This is Nintendo64 all over again with those prices.
@Airsqueeble switch games are tiny though... Zelda BOTW is about 16GB
...
@PloverNutter to be fair I think I paid $90 for several Nintendo games in the 90s…
I might buy it for my younger brother (and by extension his girlfriend who’s equally as awesome) because he does a crap ton for me. But… I’m probably never going to play it unless it’s with him. I loved my 3DS but I wasn’t huge on the Switch even though I bought one each for my brother and I. I’ll stick to my PS5 Pro and have a blast playing games that way. I’m happy the Nintendo fans are getting a great system though!!
Playstation will be sleeping fine tonight, no worries at all
Watching the Direct live at midnight (local time) - not sure if it was the time, or the content - but I kept wondering when will there be something amazing... and I didn't see it. The reveal kinda looked uninspiring to me - it was cool to see an exclusive From Soft game, but the game itself looked oddly dated. I also found the concept of having to pay for all the updates to be a bit Nintendo (I mean, when PS5 came out, they at least put most of the unlocked frame-rate boosts as free updates).
One of the problems that Nintendo have is that a lot of the ports that are now possible, still look at best like the PS4 versions. So as a console it's not that compelling for me at the moment... as a hand-held, many of the games are still older. Also a lot of those games still look pretty ordinary in terms of frame-rates. I get that Nintendo only gamers, it's good news; but it hasn't scratched the itch for me yet. It also doesn't look like it's at all comparable to current gen PS5/XB Series.
I also think the most important thing is the COST. AUD700 for what was presented looked too expensive for me - with what was presented. The social functionality means nothing to me (or my family). The additional upgrades on BOTW etc looked minimal (and don't like they were paid). Also not sure how it will work with physical cards (I assume most of the update will be held digitally). And it was surprising we didn't really learn much more about the insides of the console.
@glennthefrog But as always the best combo is both, a Switch + Playstation gives you access to essentially everything especially now that Xbox is multiplat.
You could say that, but i could easily say the best combo is a switch 2 and PC as Sony games are all on Steam with others coming to Switch 2. People on here often forget Sony is multi plat as well just in a slightly different way. Sony is timed exclsuvie to the PS5 and then to PC. Xbox is sometimes timed exclusive to Xbox/PC and later to PS. The fact remains only Nintendo games aren’t on Steam.
@Robocod Not saying they don't make good games. Just never understood a mindset that allows them to charge premium prices & never discounting their first party titles unlike others!
Maybe I can assist with that mis understanding. Nintendo only makes money on Video games. Sony makes money from Movies, TV’s etc etc, and well MS is worth over 3 trillion dollars, likely to be closer to 4 trillion by the end of the next console or sooner. Certain divisions in those company’s have different metrics to the company, Nintendo is video game sells only. Of course up until now with the movies etc, but i am sure those have their budgets and are mostly to draw more people into their games.
@TimelessJubilee “Sony doesn't see Nintendo as a threat. I don't know why this article was even made.”
I do, cause PS fans and journalists are always trying to flex on the console sales of PS while somehow being insecure about its brand. PS5 is soon to get its 4th release of Last of Us, Day’s Gone remaster, and 12 live service failed games and PS fans and journalists are out here talking about what Xbox and Nintendo are doing. It’s this weird flex that is just straight cringe to read over and over on Push. All 3 consoles stand out on their own with different offerings. To your point of Sony don’t see Nintendo as a threat, i don’t know if thats true or not, but i know Sony packed it’s bags and shut down it’s studios in Japan cause Nintendo dog walks them over there. Only to come to America and build games that don’t sell enough to have to support PC.
@ChrisDeku If Sony come out tomorrow and say Physical PS5 games will now cost $80 and Digital will be $70 are you going to call that a win for the industry?
I would, cause Physical media should cost more, there’s more cost associated with it, not to mention it sells far far far less in volume, so physical players should eat that cost. It’s the price of wanting a license on a piece of plastic while often times downloading the game anyway. So for the players that want that, they should help the companies making it. I should get a lesser price as i have gave more profit to the company and not given them more expense and man power in the process.
@ChrisDeku Apparently the battery life is “2-6.5 hours” which is Steam Deck territory(actually worse as Steam deck was officially 2-8 hours)
Thats only a few hours less than Sony’s controller with no screen or GPU/CPU for comparison sake.
@HonestHick Xbox seems to be leaning much harder into the multiplat route than Sony though, at least if the increasing speed of their ports are any indication. But sure you'll get a bunch of great Playstation games on PC as well eventually.
As you said, Nintendo is the real indispensable part of the combo.
@glennthefrog Yeah Frog i agree, the only companies games not on Steam is Nintendo. Sure MS is leaning into games everywhere but some of that push is the fact they bought two 3rd party publishers that have been multi plat. Add that in to less a world wide market for Xbox and it makes sense to me. Not to mention MS is a software company that put’s its software every where. Sony sells well worldwide and they still come to PC. Well that should tell it all. Single platform no matter the size isn’t enough.
I loved what i seen of Switch 2 today with so much more to come that once I finish my PC 5080 build i will at minimum sell my PS5 and Switch 1. Might keep my Xbox for tv console play.
Outside Metroid Prime 4 which also released for Switch 1, there's nothing on Switch 2 that looks interesting or make me scream i need to buy the console asap.
As a general rule it’s silly to buy consoles day one. I waited a year for the Switch1/ PS5 to actually get some momentum before diving in. The digital games are 60-70 bucks which is the standard price for games now. But leave it to the internet to make a mountain out of a molehill.
The silliest thing about the direct is charging for that Switch 2 demo game lol. The price for the console seems fair though. It’s a higher quality itineration of the Switch concept, and it’ll be awesome to play Elden Ring anywhere.
I'm like a lot of you guys, I primarily play on PS5 and use a Switch as a secondary console for the exclusives and portability.
If they are gonna try to angle this thing as "Hey now it gets multiplatform games day and date, way cool!", it'll be interesting to see how that goes.
Like Sammy said, everyone who was into Hitman... already played Hitman years ago at a fidelity higher than this will offer. Needs more first party exclusives, I'm sure they will come in time. This may be a wait 2-3 years for the library to develop situation for me personally.
@NotTelevision
I'll agree the price of the console doesn't seem too nuts. Nintendo plays by its own special rules on pricing, they will never sell them at a loss like the other manufacturers. That's what you call Nintendo privilege. It's fine, it's new(ish) tech, the new shiny thing.
That Mario Kart game price though. Oof. $90+ in Europe? That won't fly (or should I say drive?) very far. I know Nintendo has a large dedicated, longtime user base, but at the end of the day it's a console parents buy for their kids for Christmas, a casual machine. It can't escape that rep as the family friendly option. Mom is gonna walk right on by a $90 game on the shelf come the holidays.
I mean it should.
Switch 2 being able to run basically any modern game (if it can run C2077 and Borderlands 4 it can run anything current gen) means that people can just buy Switch 2 and nothing else.
Switch 1 was "secondary" console for many people because 99% of AAA games was not available there. That is changing now.
Because now you have a choice of buying 450$ PS5 that can play games at home, or 450$ Switch 2 that can play same games (minus PS exclusives) at home, but also they can come with you anywhere. So the only differentiators would be resolution/framerate and Nintendo vs. Sony exclusives. And we know which company have more exclusives...
To me, this is a big deal.
The original Switch is way over-priced in the territory that I live in, and I suspect the Switch 2 will be the same.
I've never been interested in the Switch due to it being over-priced where I live and the games being quite expensive as well (relative to PS4 and XB1 games).
I also think I'm quite "invested" in the PlayStation ecosystem at the moment, having quite a large Digital Library of games makes it difficult to considering switching to a different console (my secondary console is the PS Vita, which is quite sad I know...)
i think switch 2 is going to struggle mightily with that pricing model. this might be a 3ds situation all over again and nintendo will need to scramble and slash the price significantly after a poor launch period. people should vote with their wallets here because it is absurd that it will cost more than a ps5 despite being 5X less powerful. as for the $80USD games, good luck with that. nintendo has really destroyed the fun and excitement and does not deserve praise or celebration.
also, i'm not sure why people think the switch 2 will be able to run modern games well. it absolutely won't. it is equivalent to a base ps4 performance wise... maybe slightly better with the faster storage taken into consideration. sure, it might be able to run cyberpunk (as did the ps4), but do you really want to experience that game running at 20fps and at 540p with massive fidelity compromise on top of that? didn't think so.
Well I wasn't going to get a Switch 2 anyway, I think I'm done buying consoles. However it looks like I may be done buying new games also if the industry follows Nintendo's path with those game prices. I've been going in that direction this year only making an exception for Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Breakout Beyond (which was fairly cheap).
That new FromSoftware game looked hilariously random, it's kind of intriguing.
I won't be playing any of the third party ports on the Switch 2, that's what I have my PS5 for.
I only care about Nintendo's exclusives like Mario, Zelda, or Pokemon etc, nothing else!
I’ll never forget coming back from holiday and seeing final fight running on the snes at my games store. That’s the first time I said to myself that’s just like the arcade and foamed at the mouth. Apart from the neo geo snes was the best console around by far.
I always want a perfect outrun on console which helps too.
It's a difficult one to predict. Switch 2 could be £1000 and fanboys would still buy it. Actually when the scalpers have them on ebay for a thousand pounds you'll see those who'll pay it.
But is the pricing going to put many off. Especially if they already own a switch. Will parents want to buy it for their kids. Years ago I would have said no way would they justify that price. But kids today get expensive smart phones. We automatically think the successor will be a massive hit and reach over a 100 million sales. But we thought the same about the Wii U. Nobody wanted that console, why? My guess was that they had the Wii and didn't feel they needed Nintendo next console. Will people think the same for the Switch 2. For me the switch was always a handheld console that replaced the 3ds. As Nintendo never brought out another DS style handheld. When you think of all the Wii sales combined with the Nintendo handheld sales, it's something like 250 million at the time. With switch 2 being another handheld, it's likely to have the same success. But not before the price cones down as I'm sure it will.
The Switch 2 has to be a success. If not then it just leaves a PlayStation console on the market. We know we'll see a ps6, but we are uncertain about another xbox console. And if Microsoft does bring something out, it's gonna be a cloud based device. And all their games coming to other platforms like PlayStation. So it PlayStation and Nintendo that are keeping the console generations alive at the moment.
I'm getting it day one but I believe I might buy even less games than for my OG Switch.
I use it mainly as a Pokémon Machine with the usual Marios and Zeldas.
For multiplatforms, I'll keep my PS5.
@ButterySmooth30FPS Nintendo fans don't beg for remasters as much as Snoybabies though and when they do ask for remasters, it's of genuinely old games from generations ago that many of us missed out on.
But who missed out on Days Gone, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Ghost of Tsushima etc? They are also backwards compatible. The Last of Us 2 remastered and Days Gone remastered don't even look any different unless you squint your eyes.
And it's 2025 and the PS5 is still lacking big exclusives. The funny truth is, the Nintendo Switch 2 will probably have more first party exclusives on its system next year than the PS5 from its whole lifetime, most of which are already on PC now.
That means PS5 is left with Dark Farts Bollywood Smell edition, a remake of Demon's Souls, two Astro Bot games, a couple of VR games, some random mobile type shovelware and future PC releases (Ghost of Yotai and Death Stranding 2). That's after 5 years...
I'll stick with my Legion GO for a bit longer and see how everything turns out.
Access to my Steam collection + Having GamePass on a handheld will be a hard bar for Nintendo to beat.
But that is the great thing about the handheld market now. Before you were stuck with Nintendo hardware and hopping for the best.
Now we have tons of choices.
as good as switch 2 looks to be it will not match the ps5 in game performance ps5 is much stronger then switch 2. i am looking forward to comparisons for third party games on the ps5 and switch 2..
@Bamf sony is the apple of video games no matter how expensive it gets people will still buy there console and games.. sony is not being left in the dust..
The Switch is a good piece of hardware but I hardly play mine. I have a big backlog of great PS5 games. No chance I'll make the switch my primary console. Will be skipping it this time
