Are PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium ending 2024 with a bang? it's time to find out.
As per usual, a slew of new games are coming to Extra, including the well received Sonic Frontiers. The Blue Blur's open world adventure might be worth a look, even if you're not keen on the SEGA mascot himself.
Speaking of open worlds, Forspoken is also up for grabs — the widely panned action fantasy that released for PS5 in 2023. But look, you should always try and form your own opinions; keep your expectations in check and you could get something out of this Square Enix misfire.
Beyond that, we've got a weird mix of titles. FiST: Forged in Shadow Torch is worthy of a shoutout, and so is Jurassic World Evolution 2.
Meanwhile, Premium subscribers may do a double take at December's offering. PSVR2 title Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is the only new addition — but you've got to remember that Sony already dropped Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, and Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy earlier in the week.
The three PS2 classics are part of December's Premium lineup — they were just early arrivals because of PlayStation's 30th anniversary celebrations.

We want day one releases! We don’t want games that we decided to it play when they were released ages ago!
I might play through the Sly games. A bit of comfort food for the holidays.
For PS anniversary I hoped Sony would finally put something decent on plus. Oh well, there's always 35 anniversary.
Yep pretty happy. Been wanting to play sonic frontiers but not wanting to really pay for it no matter how cheap it's gotten. I played the switch demo but it was ugly as sin and ran awfully. I'm looking forward to the proper experience unless the game is really just that ugly across the board
You would think with the anniversary celebration they would go the extra mile. Nope several lumps of coal for Christmas from Sony.
Bless us everyone 🙏
Star Wars and forespoken. Very happy
I’m quite happy with Sonic Frontiers and Jak & Daxter alone.
And in all honestly they’re likely the only games I will play.
My kids want to play Phogs.
I love the Premium games, but was really expecting one or two more for the Anniversary and then releasing on an odd day. I'm not even sure which games I'd expect, maybe a non-streaming God of War or Ratchet and Clank would be cool. Longshot wish would be MediEvil 2.
Yeah not bad selection on plus at all this month, looking forward to trying f.i.s.t,wrc gen, jurassic 2 and forspoken happy days
Star Wars and WRC will go into the backlog. Whether I get around to them before they are removed is another question and with games like GOW Ragnarok and Dragons Dogma 2 in that backlog it’s probably unlikely 😆
@AhmadSumadi Gamepass has proven why day 1 releases are a serious mistake. That argument is done, dusted and away.
Very interesting numbers for Forspoken. It indicates that not many on here ever actually bought it and yet nevertheless seem enthusiastic about playing it.
Very few games have been so catastrophically damaged by a trailer as this one was. If only they dialled down Frey's mouth we could have been saying some very different things about this game right now.
I liked Sonic Frontiers from what I've played. Cyberspace levels were crazy and the open world stuff was pretty chill. Music was good too. It's worth trying out.
@LifeGirl I was actually being facetious. But someone seemed to have liked my comment.
@LifeGirl after playing the demo I decided against the game. The premise was weird and the cross talk between the lead and the sidekick annoyed me.
@LifeGirl Disagree completely about Day 1 releases not being vital to these services. I’m back on Gamepass after nearly a year off of it because they’re finally putting stuff on there Day 1 again because they actually have releases to put out. Looking at the line-up, I’ll likely stay subbed all year next year. Meanwhile, I can’t say that for PS+. The only games I played on PS+ this year were day 1s like Animal Well and Dave the Diver.
Also, on the note of Forspoken, it felt like few of the people that talked about the game had played it on release. I preordered the game and blasted through it in a weekend and really enjoyed it, but when I engaged in online discourse, I would constantly see flags from people that didn’t even know about the game outside that one quippy trailer that made people cringe. And to make matters worse, most didn’t even want to discuss the game on its own merits, but would cite the experience of others they watch online who played it. I mean, trash a game you’ve touched if you’re going to trash it.
I’m quite happy to see people be positive toward the game. No, it wasn’t a GotY tier game, but it was unique and fun, and I honestly found it to have game-like dialogue rather than cringe-inducing dialogue. I mean, did we not all grow up with a healthy heap of cringe from classics such as Resident Evil? I enjoyed it more than most PS exclusives this generation. If it would’ve released before the era of YouTubers literally complaining about every game, Forspoken would’ve been a cult classic. How many weird PS2 and PS3 era games would be trashed today, but are remembered fondly in spite of quirks? Forspoken is practically the PS5 answer to that style of game.
Forspoken, Sonic and the VR Star Wars are all games Ive been wanting to play but not enough to buy them so very happy this month
F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch. Hooray!!
Actually a quietly decent month! Sonic Frontiers has been on my radar for ages, so glad I’ll finally get to take that for a spin (pun semi intended)
And Forespoken, I actually did enjoy the demo, but the bad reviews put me off, so glad I’ll get to give it a whirl without any risk! (Couldn’t think of a pin for that one 😅)
sly 2 having more votes than sly 3 is criminal!
@LifeGirl forspoken got slagged off by people who didn't play it. As someone who played it not long after it came out i can honestly say I genuinely liked it.
It wasn't perfect but it was fun and I finished it enjoying it for the most part
Best month for a while! Been listening to the vinyl soundtrack to Sonic Frontiers quite a bit lately so I’m excited to jump on that one. Looking forward to Forspoken, too.
@somnambulance the Game Pass model is genuinely killing the Xbox brand, you can't seriously be claiming it to be the better method.
Good month. Btw any news of some ps plus offers for december?
@somnambulance no thanks, id rather have quality first party games than the majority of garbage Microsoft spews out on gamepass , if a game is top notch I'd rather own it than rent it to be honest, microsoft started GP because it didn't have a choice, the xbox would be dead and buried without it.
@DarkTron totally agree, and apart from one or two games a year it's not worth paying the sub, most of it is crappy indie games , that without gamepass wouldn't be given the time of day by gamers.
Playstation needs to change games up, they have repeatedly released the same games for the month that are already on the plus catalog, or previously was on there. The sly series have been on the catalog and game of month. They need to stop repeating games. I haven't downloaded any games from the plus due to this happening multiple times. Just saying playstation you can do so much better managing what games have been in playstation plus before adding them to the free game of the month. Disappointing how they expect us to appreciate games when they don't give us what we want and rather give us games they have handed out before.
@somnambulance Day 1 releases are vital for some people and not for many others. I don't care about Day 1 releases in the slightest. I much prefer Playstation Plus because I've had much more use out of its selection of games. Had Gamepass (f0rfor two years, but I cancelled it about 6 months ago cos I wasn't using it. Day 1 releases are a bad thing in the long run. I'm happy to wait for games or get em physical
@LifeGirl I think it's that sort of game that's perfect for PS+. Broadly speaking, there are games you really want to play and you get them ASAP, there are games you have zero interest in and wouldn't play even if they were free, then there's games that you don't massively care about but there's still something interesting about them. They can put all the CoDs they like on Plus and I'll never play them, they could put a game I was hyped for like DD2 but I already played it. But something in that odd grey area like Forspoken or Sonic Frontiers and that's perfect.
I'll take a look at the others but I almost bought WRC Generations last week so very happy with this as I've heard it's fantastic.
@Judal27 "unless the game is really just that ugly across the board"
Mostly no. The pop in is horrible on all versions, but obviously fidelity and image quality is a massive improvement.
@__Seraph @lazarus11 @DarkTron How am I claiming Gamepass to be a better method of gaming? I’m just claiming Gamepass is trending in a more positive direction by actually delivering day 1 exclusives when the last few years have been barren for the console, and now I’m back in the ecosystem. PS+ meanwhile hasn’t had a big Day 1 title since The Plucky Squire. I’m definitely dropping to the lowest tier for PS+ once my sub lapses at the current rate since… you know… I’ve bought everything of interest from the PS+ release slate. I want new games to play in a cost effective fashion. I typically purchase Sony exclusives at launch, but would be happy to get them on a sub service instead, save money, and purchase my favorite ones for permanent use. Gamepass had Nine Sols, Stalker, Black Ops 6, Metal Slug Tactics, Flight Sim, and Indiana Jones all launching on top of each other. That’s a decent line-up. Gamepass is worthwhile when it is delivering. I say this as someone that played less than 25 hours of Xbox before November and 20x that on PlayStation. If Xbox makes Gamepass a more viable option than it has been, it could be a more viable competitor.
@AhmadSumadi
Do we? You willing to pay for it? Because the price would double at least and probably triple to even get smaller regular day 1 releases. I'm guessing you're one that also complains about the price aren't you? You got a day 1 release on essential last month, did you play that?
Yeah I'm happy with it. I'll play forspoken, sonic, FIST and phogs. Might do coffee talk too for the quick plats as palette cleansers.
Not an exciting lineup by any stretch but enough there for a solid month
I'd be happier if I didn't already own Sonic, FIST, and Coffee Talk 1, but I wanted A Space for the Unbound and Coffee Talk 2. The usual feeling of being "punished" for buying games aside, it's a great month.
I'm happy to hear they're improving their PS2 emulation too. I'll play the Sly trilogy again at some point.
@Bluemoon2008 already said I was being facetious. I was poking fun at the people who actually believe that.
@AhmadSumadi fair enough. you were very convincing if that's the case.
@Orpheus79V oof I hope it's tolerable enough. But I'm glad it looks better. I guess it's another sonic unleashed wii vs xbox/ps case. Cause the difference between frontier's trailers and the switch demo was night and day
no knack 2 means an automatic fail.
@Nekomichu not yet it seems. My sub expires on 23rd. I am also waiting.
FIST is the only one I'm interested in. The rest fall into that tough space where there's just too many amazing things out to play something that is "just good," lol.
Just another demonstration of how Sony gives zero F's about its paying customers.
Giving out free games nobody wants.
How about giving iconic playstation games on the 30th anniversary like Resident Evil 1rm FF7rm Grand Turismo 7, GTA5, DMC, Tekken 7 DOA 5 (6 is trash) Crash and Jak trilogies.
Now that would be a good selection. Or have the option to turn free games off and get 50% off online subscription. As the only tier worth anything is premium for the back catalogue.
@Dalamar they did, they just don't account for the blatant entitlement of some of their users when it comes to these lineups. Want a specific game, buy it. Otherwise patience is a virtue.
@AhmadSumadi yeah cause being sarcastic or facetious comes across soooo well in text.
We'll it can if it was genuinely intended that way and when it's not it's very convenient to be able to say I was being sarcastic isn't it 😂🙈
@rusty82 you don’t know my comment history and that’s fine. I’ve always railed against those kinds of comments. My comments are there to read if you want. Though, why would you want to? lol
@AhmadSumadi I'll pass thanks if it's all the same 😂
Already played both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Sonic Frontiers, but it's great that is now part of the selection.
Will test out Forspoken for some good laughs about the horrible writing. Premium collection might be great for Cooper fans, not my cup of tea though.
Happy anytime there’s a VR game added
@AhmadSumadi day 1 releases are not a smart way to go whether it can keep subscriber numbers or not. I also don't think it's smart for studios to do this. Many of us can't play day 1 releases also when a game is later added to PS+ it's an opportunity for us to dive in and get our subscription worth.
For instance, I was interested in Forspoken but after the first reviews, I decided to not even waste money and give it a go.
Witcher 3 is on PS+ and I have never had an interest in it until seeing The Witcher 4 trailer. So now I don't have to spend money, even on the discounted complete edition rate and get my PS+ Extra worth by playing the game and deciding 50+ gaming hours later if I want to play the DLC for $10-$20.
@somnambulance in your opinion and that's all well and good , in mine the only game worth playing has been indy, the rest haven't been worth my time , stalker is /was broke no time for that , flight simulator wouldn't even start , no time ,metal slug and nine sols, ugh no thankyou, its all subjective , i was happy with all the vr games given away on ps plus last month.
1st one in a couple of years that's been crap for me.
@SillyBoyJudas I’ve stated a few times that I was only kidding about what I said. Also, I felt the same about Forspoken. The demo put me off more so than the reviews. Reviews are someone else’s opinion. I played for myself and decided against it.
Now, The Witcher 3 is my all time favorite game! So much so that I have a shortcut saved in my phone for while I have to type “The Witcher 3” because I talk about it so often lol. Amazing game and you can get lost in the world for hours. Give it a go! You will not be disappointed!
@AhmadSumadi Speak for yourself ! I would still have gamepass if I wanted that !
