After what feels like an age of alpha and beta testing periods, The First Descendant has finally arrived on PS5. This free-to-play looter shooter is a little bit like a third-person Destiny, but instead of creating your own protagonist, you select playable heroes from a roster. Each of them is equipped with their own specialisations and abilities, and of course, if you want to bypass the grind, you can cough up real cash to unlock more of them.
In fact, The First Descendant's microtransactions are already a hot topic. Especially expensive in-game purchases have been highlighted, with comparisons to long-standing titles like Warframe proving to be pretty damning for the new kid on the block.
But you might not give a crap about all that. Maybe you're sitting there right now, having a blast with The First Descendant. Let us know if you're playing this new PS5 looter shooter by voting in our polls, and then explaining yourself in the comments section below.

I'd never heard of the game until just now
I'd probably give it a try if Zenless Zone Zero didn't just come out. Might check it out down the road though.
@Enuo
Lol I read this post and was like wtf is even this? Then I was like that's right, it's the next game by the Genshin studio and now I realised they're 2 different games...
These games look so bland and generic, jeez. Factory made
Where is option? Yes, but now it is deleted
To be honest, The First Descendant is a nice mixture of Warframe and Destiny. Movement is fluid and fast, mobs are aggressive enough not to get bored, loot is dropping often and there seems to be enough variety and complexity in theory-crafting and creating your own build. Though the story overall in quite generic, the characters seem interesting (even despite lacking some depth and presentation) and cinematics are cool. Gonna beat the main campaign at least and probably test the end-game.
Nah playa.im playing and im having fun with other video games.my backlog is huge right now.word up son
This game looks kinda insteresting and yeah it reminds me of Warframe especially the armor suit design.
But no, i'm playing other games right now. Just finished Strider 2014 with Hard diff and this game is a decade old but it still fun as hell 😘. I bought it on day 1 for $15 and it doesn't have DLC, BS mtx, lootboxes, season pass, or any woke stuff. It is just pure awesomeness from start to finish, a game that trully respect my time and money 😘. Capcom, it's about time for a new Strider game!
I would like to but first night it was unplayable due to performance issues and last night I couldn’t even get in because the server was down for maintenance.
Played it last night on PS5 and was a total lag-fest, then got disconnected during a mission.
Where is the "I literally never heard of it till today" option?
I gave Destiny and Warframe far too long. I can't do it again.
The release date was perfect for me. Just hit the wall of apathy with D2's Final Shape and it's monotonous grind, and after walking away from D2, the First Descendant fills that slot nicely.
Still only about 5-6 hours in, but ripping around areas as Bunny is fun. Seriously appreciate the open "matchmaking" style of missions i.e. if you're in the same instance as someone else and they're doing a mission you need to do, you join up and co-op the mission while it's in progress.
While the microtransactions are a "hot topic", it's a F2P game - while it's free to play, it's not free to make or run, so while I likely won't be buying anything, I can understand the inclusion, and with the amount of Thirsty Whales buying Bunny Ults in the first 48 hours, you know Nexon likely made a pretty penny!
Good game overall. Hopefully the end-game has legs and keeps me running around long!
Been having fun with it though the MTX are pretty bad.
Too many good games to play. I have yet to invest any time in a free to play game and the only live service I have played is Helldivers II and COD. Pretty much done with COD and Helldivers II is a couple hours a week. This game looks pretty but I just don’t find the format engaging.
Im having fun with it but the microtransactions and the lack of a crouch/slide button like Warframe makes it feel sort of clunky
NOPE! The fast pace (I'm "old"), the online aspect, the no doubt over-the-top earnings model for the dev/publisher. Nah... I'd rather play 30-80 Euros, 8-25+ hour single player story driven games.
Just waiting to see if they fix some of the bugged trophies before I dive in.
I've been enjoying it so far. Just unlocked Bunny.
It feels pretty solid to play, though the controls aren't as fluid as I'd like. But the powers are fun in-combat, the loot is generous, and the graphics are solid.
If anything, I'll see how far I can go without hitting the MTX paywall. For $0, it's solid Summer popcorn fluff-style gaming.
Will say, though, kind of wild to have this and ZZZ launch within days of one another. I wonder what effect that will have on each title, as action fans may be split between them (I know I am).
Trying to, between crashes.
Zenless Zone Zero saving the day though...
I think the game looks decent but I don't have any friends playing, so my interest is minimal without the social aspect.
There are allegedly poor performance issues on PS5. Framerate seems to be a problem right now. Hopefully they fix that
@Specky bland and generic? A bit like your comments? It's a great game and I'll be playing this tonight..
@zhoont Framerate feels much better today.
Tried playing, server down. I'll try again today. I usually give these a shot if it's fun solo and I drop them at endgame content as that usually need groups.
Hey if it’s compared to Warframe then I’m giving it a go!
I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than sit through another live service microtransaction hell.
Okay, that sub-headline made me chuckle.
Nah, I like the games I play to have a beginning and an end.
Haven't heard of this game till this article. But no thx
I am not no. I avoid free to play games like the Plague unless they're exceptionally good. Genshin Impact is an example where I made an exception for example.
Played for few hours and it's decent enough nothing spectacular. Back on board the Desiny train at the moment and really only enough time for one live service looters at a time. I'm sure I'll revisit in the future
@Northern_munkey
Le epic diss!
I don't have to entertain you luckily. I just share my opinions.
I know it's a fact that gamers can't handle criticism towards their beloved fragile multimillion dollar franchises, but oh well. I'll still share my opinion ☺️
@Specky great come back...well done 👍
@Northern_munkey
Buddy you're the one who gave me crap lol, but whatever.
I was comparing the games' looks. I have literally no idea if it's good or not, so can't say anything on that. I did kinda like Genshin, but it was too much. Might have to look into this then if it's good
Don't think I've heard of it until now... but as it seems, it's not for me anyway.
The gameplay’s not for me. Not into Warframe. I think I may be hitting a point where I’m just aware that F2P games are for a different demographic than me and that’s ok. I try them all, but I think Splitgate was the last one I really liked.
Yeah I tried it just now, its alright. Most similar to Destiny amongst the games I've played.
Looks pretty, great controls, crap story (but who cares) and some nice looking ladies(or lads if that's your thing). Overall fun to play and turn off my brain after some more very immersive VR games and demanding Soulslikes lately.
Not sure if I'll stick with it though, depends if friends will play it with me.
@Specky OK fair enough.
@REALAIS jup same here, knew enough after 15 minutes. Instant delete
I'm actually kinda digging it. I don't normally do F2P games.
I was VERY addicted to Warframe some years back and have mostly avoided live service games sunce. I'm a bit scared of trying it in case I fall into that rabbit hole again. A good friend of mine played it day one and seems pretty impressed by it though, so I may be swayed yet.
@Specky dumbest take , jeez
@RubyCarbuncle I have some questions...
1 - If you avoid all F2P games unless they're "exceptionally good", how do you know they're good? Opinions are subjective, so good to you may be completely different to what I think is good. Do you go purely on the opinions of others? If 80% of people don't like a game, that means 20% do like it, how do you know whether you're in the 80% or the 20% if you never try a game?
2 - While Genshin Impact is "F2P", it's a gacha-game. Do you think The First Descendant is a gacha-game?
@zhoont most of us have no idea about this, have no problems
So, the first day the servers wouldn't let me on
Now, the game crashes every time I talk to the first guy in the next area..
I've sent 5 crash reports.
Hopefully it will settle down and be playable
I won't touch a f2p game. Looter shooters can be good though. Destiny 2 rocks (though I got out years ago and won't go back).
@DarianStarfrog that specky guy is always in the comments dropping dumb takes. Has a real obsession with big companies.
Enjoying it quite a bit. I really like how the missions work. More than once I've found myself struggling on a mission, only for other players to show up and save my ass.
I just don’t understand looter shooters. I don’t vibe with the game loop at all. It just seems really boring and pointless.
That being said, I have hundreds of hours of Elite Dangerous under my belt, so…
No, I avoid free-to-play like the plague -Very good option. Thank you.
I try to avoid most live service games. Granted I used to play World of Warcraft. I don't like games having a control over my life. Wow felt like this. I want to be able to sit down and play on my own time and terms without anything restraining me.
@DarianStarfrog there are framerate issues although like the whole dragons dogma 2 meltdown they are exaggerated. Yes they are there but they do not make the game unplayable in any way. I've not encountered a crash yet (fingers crossed.) There seems to be a bit of a furore brewing over predatory and invasive mtx's which is quite clearly not true. They are there but they are not forced upon you during gameplay and you do have the option to not buy into them. They are not pay to win as the game is not pvp. There are people who are commenting on the "alleged frame rate issues" which just tells me there are people who are forming an opinion and pushing that agenda onto people when they have not even played the game which is more likely to harm the player base. My message to people who want to play this is to try it as it's free and listen to the gamers who are playing it and are enjoying themselves a lot.
I read on quite a few places that it runs horrible on the PS5 no idea if it's true though.
@Northern_munkey What are framerate drops if it's more then 10/15 during gameplay then it's quite bad.
@Flaming_Kaiser only framerate issues I've experienced are in the main hub, Albion, which is likely due to the amount of players in the hub. In the game world I haven't had any frame drops. Albion isn't a "world" region, it's just vendors and other players so framerate drops there aren't going to get you killed.
@Mortal Maybe I'll get it in the future after a few patches the game looks cool but time and choice makes me go for the better games first.
Ftp is just not for me.
@Northern_munkey I think the game is just demanding overall. I'm playing on a pretty powerful PC with 4080 GPU, and with everything on Ultra settings (2560x1440 monitor) and Raytracing set to minimum I can get around 95fps max. Any higher raytracing option could make it stutter.
@Flaming_Kaiser It runs a lot better now then release day, its not perfect but its improved heavily on PS5.
@Yusuo Neither have I. It'll probably do 'surprisingly well' for a few months, then numbers will drop and it'll vanish off the face of the earth. Just another looter shooter. I find the idea of them so boring at this point
I'm playing, but on PC though, and it's as if Warframe, Destiny, Anthem, and Outriders were chucked into a blender and the resultant mix was First Descendant.
It's like the best bits of all of them and so far I am have a complete blast. Great modding system, good graphics, and responsive, very acrobatic, gameplay.
I'll be getting on my PS5 as it seems like a perfect for the Portal. I haven't tried it yet on my Steamdeck, Rog Ally, or Legion Go but I'm betting the portal will be a better experience.
@Mortal Online Research? how else would I know? and I ask people I know who have played them. Pretty obvious really.
Enjoying it quite a bit. The gunplay and haptic feedback are excellent. Will see if the leveling slows down and other descendents are hard to get after Bunny. For free no need to complain.
@Flaming_Kaiser as @Mortal has said there are frame rate issues in albion. There are some in the actual missions as well but they are really not that bad to be fair. It's been out 2 days and the devs are already ironing things out.
@RubyCarbuncle so you've learned how to let other people tell you what is or isn't good, and to never see for yourself if it is or isn't good. Well done!
I can understand applying that mentality out of caution towards something that costs money, afterall no-one wants to waste money and so reviews from trusted sources are a good reference, but when the game is F2P there is nothing to lose from trying it.
Sometimes you don't need to listen to the rest of the herd. Sometimes there is no harm in having the experience yourself and forming an opinion based on that.
@Mortal exactly..all it costs is the time to download it..
Dawntrail just dropped so won't be playing this anytime soon.
It's a fun game so far, when the servers are working, but it's a bit sad that all cosmetics in the game are locked behind a paywall. I think free games having premium cosmetics is fine, but give us some options to make our characters our own. It's so weird seeing 40 identical characters running around the same area.
This game is amazing. And free to play, also the amount of stuff you can unlock in game is amazing.
Also the fact me and my friends can play online crossplay.
Man gaming diehards are strange birds.
The very millisecond you offer a dissenting point of view.....
I learned my lesson from Destiny 2, such a mind numbing time sink these games are.
Probably never again
@Northern_munkey No big problems but I have a backlog and if I start a little bit more in the future then i will probably get the best experience anyways.
