The first State of Play showcase of 2023 has been and gone, with Sony taking the digital stage to reveal a lengthy look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League alongside new PSVR2 titles and more games from its partners. Clocking in at an impressive 45 minutes, the platform holder had a lot to show.
New game announcements included Baldur's Gate 3 and various PSVR2 titles. Resident Evil 4 was also there with a new trailer, and so too was Street Fighter 6 to reveal some new characters.
But what did you think of the show? Has Sony kicked the year off in style or were you left wanting more? Place a vote in our poll and expand on your thoughts in the comments below.

Superceded even my lowest expectations. Found it terrible personally.
I voted poor , would've been very poor if it wasn't for capcom
awful - foglands only thing for me and it was first minute of show, didnt need to see more re4
Um...No.
One of the worst State of Plays in recent memory sadly.
I was actually shocked by how utterly chaotic and uninteresting Suicide Squad looked...
Not great. A hard comedown after the previous State of Plays last year.
Hopefully we get a more heavy hitting broadcast soon.
It was mostly boring, nothing really exciting was shown or announced. Felt like I watched a bunch of youtube pre-vid ads for 40 minutes.
That was bad, both Xbox and Nintendo's recent shows have put this to shame. Capcoms bit was good but we already know about those, a couple of the VR games looked promising as does Humanity. Suicide Squad looks like Crackdown but worse just shooting purple blobs and I can't remember much else
That was so horrible lol.
Justice League could've been its own state of play and that was it lol.
Re4 and sf6 look great, but we've seen more than enough from them.
So where the hell are the first party games? Are we really going to wait until freaking June?!!!!
I didn't expect anything, so those BG3 and RE4 trailers were nice.
I still find it funny that people get disappointed or expect megatons from these even when set your expectations beforehand.
I kept my expectations low but still disappointed
Everything in this presentation felt like an ad before the main event, which is the Suicide Squad game
Ah well, at least RE4 Remake trailer was decent
Sony really need to do something about this lack of comms and then presenting awful State of Plays. It’s just not good enough when they have such strong first party games and potential third party offerings too. Really annoying.
I Have to be brutally honest, I saw nothing in there at all to convince me to spend my hard earned cash on a PSVR2 headset
Capcom went all out with that RE4 Remake trailer, almost felt like they showed too much.
I had literally zero expectations and somehow I left disappointed, quite possibly the worst state of play I’ve ever seen. 1/10 because humanity looks awesome 😂
Meh. They've given us nothing to look forward to in 2023
Wasn’t expecting a lot, but wow was that bad. The Suicide Squad looks horrendous. LOL
@Would_you_kindly
Capgod*
Capcom will be this year publisher. They also have Pragmata.
Capcom carried it and even then that stuff was hardly great. Rather boring show and Suicide Squad looks like it wants to be the new Marvel's Avengers for some reason haha.
I can’t believe they unironically said the words “battle pass” in the Suicide Squad segment like it was something to be excited about
@Member_the_game totally agree. Cancelled my preorder and not regretting it. Maybe it gets better but feeling like this is the Vita 2.0
First they send me a broken PSVR2 yesterday which I need to return, and today this 😂
Personally thought that was quite poor as we haven’t heard from Sony for a while. Still no indication of what there studios are working on
@4RunnerX it definitely looked like a live service game
WTF was that? Maybe the worst SoP of all time...
I voted poor too sadly. There was some good stuff mixed in there (Capcom as always stole the show), and Tchia looked good. A couple of the VR games looked interesting too - particularly that blink game. But suicide squad looks extremely generic and forgettable as expected. Rocksteady have moved so far away from what made Arkham Asylum great. And there were a lot of mid looking titles in there like those two random fantasy games.
After a period of long silence, and as Sony looks to relaunch PS5, it was very underwhelming, and also did little to inspire confidence in making VR2 look like a must buy right now. Must do better next time
@edwinjoe450
Yeah. Me too. Spoiler galore.
@edwinjoe450 good point.
There was not much here for me. I am sure other people enjoyed it more, and I am glad for them. But not much shown raised my enthusiasm.
I love Rocksteady and comics, but I have never been interested in the Suicide Squad in the comics or elsewhere. Nothing Rocksteady has shown has gotten me very interested. With the gear system and the way fighting looks (and the "It can be SP we swear") it reminds me of Outriders or Avengers-which I thought was incredibly boring. Deep sale for me, and only because it is Rocksteady.
I am disappointed but again-that is just me. I am sure there is a lot here for others to love.
The more I see Suicide Squad the less I'm interested in it. Seeing Quinn doing flips are pulling out a mini gun out of nowhere just does not compute for me.
Was really expecting that last of us multiplayer to be shown aswell atleast a tease it's been forever now
was dreadful.
really dreadful.
SS looks like a steaming pile.
Who voted excellent? Lol
No it was poor. Quite poor.
Only decent part was the early reveal of some of the upcoming Extra games. Now those games look good, but as the highlight for a State of Play it's not good.
I wasn't even expecting that much from this State of Play to begin with and I was still disappointed. Incredibly boring show I tried not to fall asleep through. Capcom essentially carried it with Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 Remake. Even if fighting games are not my thing hard to deny how good Street Fighter 6 looked.
I know these games take time but where in the world is Stellar Blade, Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or any kind of first party announcement? There's so much stuff to be excited for but no sign of it.
@Member_the_game weirdly they seem to have announced better PSVR2 games just through blog posts and trailer drops
Better have no show than something like this. All these samey live service, coop looter shooters, whimsical and samey indie games about growing up and loss or whatever some over sensitive dev thinks he/she must share, fantasy romps with no personality...
This was a presentation of games with no personality.
Joined abour half-way through so missed the VR2 content. I basically saw a couple of fantasy type games (cool I guess) and the SF6 and RE4 trailers. Capcom definitely the MVP here.
I don't know if I am struggling to pay attention, but there was so much stuff on screen with Suicide Squad, I found it difficult to follow and get interested. There was a lot of visual flair, but the gameplay is definitely not for me.
Really weak state of play imo. Only good thing that came out of it was Baldurs gate 3.
2 good looking vr games. The one from ndreams and foglands
@KaijuKaiser Sony chose to put out a show like this, nobody forced them not to show their own games
What a load of cack. I agree with Would_you_kindly, and say Capcoms stuff was great, but thats multi platform anyway.
Sorry, but I think I would quit gaming if there weren't any Japanese studios. Seriously, only Capcom delivered the goods.
@Westernwolf4 I'm with you on that. Even if it's not a "real" live service game like the ones you named it is still built on the same kind of gear system that I HATE
It sort of reminds me of the meme “our expectations were low, but holy f%^*!”
What a terrible show! And that Suicide Squad seems to be the same average as Gotham Knights. =
No idea what you lot were expecting. They said no first party- Bungie might be owned by Sony but is a partner (there was no PS logo intro).
It’s literally in the tweet. PSVR, games from our partners & 15mins of Suicide Squad.
I thought it was great! SF6 looks incredible.
@Chaotic_Goat I am glad I am not the only one. Maybe I am being unfair, but as soon as I hear "gear system" I bristle. I played three games with that as a main component this past year, and they were all very underwhelming.
Well Jeff Grubb was definitely right when he said there will be a Low key SoP first.
State of Play's seem to range from 'absolute god-sends' to 'damningly mediocre' and tonight's show very much leaned closer to the latter than the former. Nothing I'd call outright bad mind you, just a whole lot of....OK. And having that Suicide Squad reel be the closer? An odd decision for sure.
Then again I got my Cammy Trailer so that automatically makes this a 10/10.
My expectations were low but my god was this bad. 8 years for this Suicide Squad game? It looks like Chat GPT created the concept for this game. Literally showing off Battle Pass and Store in the menu of your trailer. There's just no shame anymore.
I quite liked it, I liked seeing Tchia and Humanity, Resident Evil 4 looked good and I may be the only one in this thread who actually liked what I seen of Suicide Squad. I don’t know if I’ll get it yet though.
I've seen enough Suicide Squad for a lifetime... I'm sure some are excited for it but it seems quite the fall from the glory days of Arkham Asylum for me.
Suicide squad looking meh.
I picked Poor, too much live service but it was nice seeing Capcom and Tchia appear. Suicide Squad looks like it's going to pretty much go the same way as Avengers which is a shame as I enjoyed the Arkham games.
I was falling asleep until Resident Evil 4 came on.
Baldurs Gate 3 though!
Poor, and that’s me being generous
After this SoP my wishlist for 2023 remains the same: Horizon Forbidden West DLC and Stellar Blade.
Meh. Not much to say.
Capcom continues to just knock it out of the park. I actually also though Suicide Squad looked better than I thought it would. I wouldn't say it blew me away but I'm a bit more on board than I was going into the event. Baldurs Gate 3 getting console confirmation was great to see.
The 1st half of it was pretty much a wash for me though. None of the smaller titles really hit for me though.
Not spectacular by any means, but not terrible either.
The VR games looked fun, and Ghostwire going to Plus next month was nice. I'll definitely give it a go.
And while it was an average show, seeing Baldur's Gate III confirmed for PS5 was fantastic.
@kyleforrester87
Right!? I was expecting that to stay on PC for a year or two after launch. I was delighted to see that. It made the whole show worth it for me.
So hyped to see it confirmed for August.
It was ok, except that Suicide Squad gameplay. Looked boring as hell. And that Harley Spidey Quinn... oh brother... this will be the first rocksteady game I'll be skipping.
@Amin1998 looks like Marvel's Avengers 2.0
I didn't expect anything but Street Fighter and there it was AND IT WAS FANTASTIC. So I'm happy.
Poor showing. Let's hope the rumors are true and we get a proper showcase before E3 time.
Battle passes need to stop especially on games like suicide squad. There's no excuse for it. When it's a multiplayer free to play game like apex legends I don't mind. But this is just an insult to the gaming community.
RE4 is the only thing here that interests me and even that was a let down. I really dislike this remake's art direction. The game is way too dark, the colours are over saturated and the overuse of fog looks awful. The original had a way better visual style to me that actually captured the desolate village feel. The game will probably play fine but can't say I'm happy with the way it looks.
It was straight up HORRENDOUS
Destiny is looking very cool these days too.
I might be tempted to drift back.
@Perturbator for a rocksteady game, it's downright scandalous and revolting. Gameplay looks so, I don't know, generic. It's almost as if I'm looking at Fortnite with a rocksteady dlc.
Also Sony, when are we finally getting a psplus mobile app for streaming?
Surprised at how good SF6 looked.
Honestly, I think I’m set for the next 12 months. Got so much VR2 stuff, then Hogwarts to get back to, then Scarlet Nexus on Extra, Y8 and 9 in my backlog, then the supreme Ishin, not to mention loads more VR2 stuff, and FF16.
Yeah, sadly a bad one. Was what I expected, though, unfortunately. I still don't think they quite understand this format.
I thought it was ok but definitely several steps down from the last few.
Just all around a bad showing and honestly is a bit concerning in terms of Sonys road map going forward. When in context, this is the first news we have heard in this form for over a year, and this...
Good God, suicide squad looks like a lame live service shooter. Complete with bullet sponge enemies, lame gameplay, and somehow they just chose to make every suicide squad member a simple gun toting fortnite/apex style charachter to make it fit this model.
I can't fathom how or why rocksteady thought this was the next evolution in their craft.
The best thing about this livestream in terms of how it showed was them releasing Tchia straight intoPs plus and Baldurs Gate 3. Lmfao, oh and maybe playing ghostwire tokyo tokyo for free rather than paying for it and being letdown. I will say that even though I think fighting games are too shallow and simplistic for My tastes; street fighter's animations and art style are pretty Damn good. Leagues above what tekken 8 is looking like.
At least we have a few 3rd party titles coming, but even those are fewer and farther between than we want to admit. However, I'm concerned Sony played all their cards on cross gen capitalization and what we will have until the end of the PS5 life cycle is live service garbage from Sony studios until those that were forced into cross Gen games will be able to produce anything current Gen in 2025 at the soonest aside from Spiderman 2 Ubisoft edition.
Glad I skipped it, but also glad Tchia will be on PS+. I preordered the Capcom games ages ago, so it’s nice to see the games I bought still look good, I guess?
With that line-up though, it legitimately was a bad State of Play, which is baffling considering the Direct was phenomenal and Xbox’s recent presentation was relatively solid. Not quite sure what Sony was doing with that one and not quite sure who would be excited about what Suicide Squad appears to be.
Absolute crap...and suicide squad....it truly is the epitome of the word...meh,if it wasn't for those ps plus announcements,it would've been, a games with gold kind of terrible.
Didnt sony say it was mainly about PSVR2 and indies? Yet people still went in with unrealistic expectations.
For me Tchia looks great and can't wait to play that, not too long to go either. Also that destiny 2 trailer was pretty damn good, so good infact it's actually made me want to junk back into destiny after three years away. Also great to see baldurs gate 3 coming to playstation. Kinda disappointed not to see a little devil inside though.
Resident evil 4 and Street Fighter looking great, but Suicide squad looks kinda generic and looks last gen (apart from cutscenes), another game that the live service aspect has taken priority over the actual gameplay itself. Same happened with Avengers and Gotham Knights.
Some interesting VR games but at the moment im not too interested in them as I don't plan on getting the VR2 until its £400 or lower which will take a few years.
PlayStation delivered on what they said the show was about but obviously people didn't read the memo and were expecting some high profile AAA third party game reveals.
@UltimateOtaku91 it was more about suicide squad, there where 5 vr games, with only that foundation thing looking any good
It's was pretty garbage tbh.
Was OK for what it was, not great by any means just not as bad as some say it is. For a SoP it wasn't bad, there's genuinely been far worser SoPs. Tchia PS Plus reveal the highlight of the show for me and Suicide Squad looked far more impressive than what I was expecting. Massive triple AAA 1st and 3rd party games take a super long time to make these days so I've learned to be patient with these reveals, they'll come when they're ready
Went in with low expectations and was still disappointed. I knew it would be 4-5 PSVR2 titles and Suicide Squad. Of those only Before your Eyes appealed, which we already knew about, it came out last year.
I went in hoping, praying, that Suicide Squad wasn't going to be Avengers 2.0... I came out pretty sure it is Avengers 2.0. The movement looks fine, but everything else looks meh to bad. Live service shooter, with a battle pass, loot system, weapon and character levels, sound familiar? Sound's awful.
Such a shame, as Rocksteady is a talented studio and the PREMISE, 'Kill the Justice League' is wonderful. Sadly this ain't it.
Outside of that I enjoyed Tchia and RE4, but this was mostly footage that has been seen already, or very similar to it.
I could swear that there was a lot of talk about LOADS of new Star Wars titles in development last year - an explosion of new IPs following EA losing exclusivity rights.
So … EA make a sequel and get it out in April. All the others disappear into the ether without a word?
Just an example of some of the stuff which has been touted that people are waiting to hear more about at events like these. There are many others I know …
I’m willing to say this is the worst event Sony has ever put together.
I enjoyed the (mostly) brand new VR titles, and a bit more RE4. The rest was fine, Suicide Squad was pretty underwhelming though...I try to remain hopeful, Rocksteady is a fantstic dev.
I just want a good co-op DC game p l e a s e.
Wow was that bad. Nothing but extremely indie indie titles and games we've already seen before. A shame after how good the last one was with several fairly big mainstream titles, not extremely indie stuff you'd find on Game Pass. Not saying some of them won't be good, but to have literally nothing of interest throughout the whole show (I'm already buying Resident Evil 4) earned this a Very Poor. The only reason why I didn't give it a Terrible is technically I didn't finish it since I didn't watch the Suicide Squad part.
Very poor. If it wasn't for Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 remake, I'd have voted 'Terrible' without even thinking about it. We're in the third year of this console gen. I need to see a lot better than what was shown today.
@Would_you_kindly they said there would be no first party beforehand?
I think some on here need to go back and watch some of the other poor SoPs from years back and you might just say you know what this latest SoP tonight wasn't so bad in comparison to those. Yh the two previous SoPs before this one were massive improvements but they can't all be like that unfortunately. Like what is Sony to do here on this SoP, show their hand early and then have such a poor Showcase later in the year with nothing new to show for it cause it was all revealed much earlier on tonight's smaller SoP instead
@ROTTIEMAN16 destiny was in their & they own bungie now
@Would_you_kindly there not really first party though are they there partners
It was OK and that's only because of Capcom. Without Capcom it would have been terrible.
Sony needs to have a showcase of their first party titles.
An excellent State of Play to show why MS should not be allowed to buy Activision. lol
@ROTTIEMAN16 well they didn't spend $3.6 billion to be partners they're owned by Sony so they're a first party studio
I imagine the summer showcase will be much better. They are probably saving all big announcements for that show but man this show was a waste of 45 minutes.
@get2sammyb which would be okay if the communication from PS was better. Sadly it is bad
@Beerheadgamer82 sometimes its better to show nothing than to show stuff people dont really care about/get excited over. SF6/RE4 are already out there anyway. then 15min of SS that left the whole show flat.
nothing shown was on my rader and still after nothing shown is something i have interest to purchase.
probably buy suicide squad in the tenner bargin bin sales eventually.
I expected not too much and got it.
However Tchia day one on extra means in gets a 5/10 😁
After grumbling for sometime I finally bought a PS5 after Christmas, assuming we’d finally get the big ‘Next Gen’ games this year.
For me personally the Switch somehow has three times more exciting games this year than PS5 and XBX have combined. That really shouldn’t still be a thing.
i never watch them , glad i didnt waste my time i guess lmao. sorry guys haha
Honestly, that was the first SoP in a while that I actually disliked.
PSVR games are so hard to be shown off in a video, it’s such a hard thing to market without actually playing and seeing for yourself. Capcom games looked good, but overall would give this show a 2/10
@Would_you_kindly think the last of Us Multiplayer will be a June time announcement to go alongside MS’s show. Plus is could even be further delayed and skip that. Which i hope isn’t the case cause now that God of War is out, last of us multiplayer is the next biggest game i want on PS5. PS5 is an exclusive only console for me, so i go long periods of time without anything. But i am excited to see what last of us online will look and play like. I am good with them taking their time and getting it right.
Capcom games looked good but was anyone’s minds changed? I wasn’t gonna get streetfigher but now Cammy has a brexit jacket I’m defo getting it!
The rest was worse than terrible
@stvevan it's an SoP though, they're not always known for being top tier shows all of the time. It showed games for the PSVR2 coming maybe in the first half of this year cause you know theres a new PSVR2 released this month. It also shown other 3rd party games coming in the 1st half of this year too. They never mentioned anything in the blogpost about this SoP having 1st party reveals or any games coming in the summer or 2024 teases, those should be coming around E3 summertime or a little later after that this year. Yh I know this SoP wasn't superb top tier high quality premium gold but it done exactly what it said in the blogpost a few days ago
I very rarely miss a Sony or Nintendo video game presentation, but this 1 I skipped on purpose as PS VR2 is not in my plans, so I played the free weekend of D2: Witch Queen instead. Looks like I made the right choice. 🤷🏻♂️
Don't care about VR, RE or Suicide Squad, but hype for SF6 and Baldur's Gate 3.
Destiny 2 Lightfall-no gameplay shown
The PSVR2 stuff, i dunno what to think. It's difficult to judge VR trailers expecially when you don't have one.
Still, nothing stood out.
Humanity- I never have much imagination when it comes to these type of games, so I can't see myself messing around with this. There's a demo so maybe i'll try that out.
Street Fighter 6 trailer- Looks cool. Especially Cammy. The stages all look great.
The Ninja Storm game was basically a collection? They did say you can play some new character. I dunno I likely will skip this one.
Wayfinder-Nah
Suicide Squad- Eh not really impressed with this game so far.
State of Play= Poor
Highlights for me is the SF6 trailer. The State of Play reminded me that I should be trying out Destiny 2 since my friends play it. Im like the last holdout
and I don't even have a shooter to play outside of Battlefield 4.
I voted good, solely because of Baldur’s Gate 3.
Capcom wasn't much better than the rest 😂 tchia looks a nice addition to ps+ but bar that it wasn't great.
Sounds like skipping this was the correct decision. Based on what we knew beforehand, I could tell it would have nothing that was of interest to me.
This one was really bad.
Was hoping to see more first party stuff but it was mostly just RE4 remake, SF6, and Suicide Squad.
What a waste of time, especially after last year's lack of showcase. Suicide squad looks truly awful and the vr games looked pretty meh. No Alyx or anything that looks even half decent
State of Play feels like a ripoff of Nintendo Directs, lacking the charm
@Beerheadgamer82 @UltimateOtaku91 @JONOFTHEJONS @Fight_Teza_Fight @Athrum I thought it was decent for what they warned us it was going to focus on before the event started.
Anyone expecting 1st party reveals/updates or brand new games being shown off here, only have themselves to blame honestly for not lowering their expectations and taking the time to do their research on this particular State of Play beforehand.
@Green-Bandit @Somebody @BossBE @Luvstagrind @Would_you_kindly @JAMes-BroWWWn @Sam_ATLUS @itsfoz @GodofCapcom @WizzNL Fingers crossed that the rumored PlayStation Showcase in June turns out to be real. There's a big amount of 1st party games that we haven't had any updates on since 2021.
Alot of impatient gamers are gonna be upset if they have to wait until September for said news.
It's not fantastic. More than that, I think it's just a reflection of the industry as a whole these days. Derivative and uninspired ideas to feed the faceless corporate machine. "Depressing" wasn't an option on the poll, sadly.
Between okay and poor.
Humanity, resident evil 4, street fighter 6 and tchia were the only thing I liked.
Suicide squad was, sigh, let's just don't talk about it.
BALDURS GATE 3
@tameshiyaku Well said, gone are the days when Playstation was home to fun and interesting concepts, all we get these days is a steady stream of the same old nonsense you were pointing out.
@GodofCapcom I'm concerned Pragmata is this gen's Deep Down, for a game that was originally planned to launch last year we've seen next to nothing of it.
It was okay. Tchia continues to look charming, Goodbye Volcano High actually looks like a game now, getting a release date for Baldurs Gate 3 was good. Street Fighter 6 continues to look better and better (Cammy main feeling good about her new look) and RE4 Remake also looks neat!
But oh man, Suicide Squad 'looks' pretty, but so does a gold painted turd... Live service, cosmetic battle-passing bollocks... I was hoping we weren't getting two DC stinkers but there it is.
Nothing that made me want to open my wallet, which is a good thing at the moment! Have plenty to play for a while at least.
Lemmings, I mean Humanity, and Foglands look interesting. May be tempted for the right price.
It wasnt a good state of play.it was ok.word up son
Like I wrote before, I only watched up until the SS content.
The presentation itself was nothing special, only thing I cared about in there was SF6.
I can't say I was expecting much so I don't feel all that disappointed.
I had been anticipating Suicide Squad for a long time now, and quite frankly it just is not what I was hoping for from Rocksteady. It looks like it could be fun enough to play, but I was anticipating to really Feel like I was each of those characters in the way the Arkham games make you feel like you are Batman. Might grab it on a sale or once the price drops if it reviews well enough.
Actually though the thing I got the most excited for was the Baldur's Gate 3 release date announcement. Genuinely excited for that. There was also that dog game that kinda looks like an expansion on the Clank puzzle sections from Rift Apart. That seemed interesting too. Oh! And Tchia looks nice too. Having that be on PS+ day one did pleasantly surprise me.
@KidBoruto ever since Sony left E3 and started doing its own shows like Nintendo. The info to the gamer hasn’t been great knowing if and when we will hear from them. I wish the Big 3 were all at E3 this year, but i understand why not and we will still see stuff all that week. Hopefully all 3 are packing in the heavy hitters for a great June showcase.
Rubbish. Man on man what absolute turd water this gen has been, & the PS5 kicked off with such a bang too. Now to see Rocksteady making 3rd person Destiny is a real kick to the nads.
RE4 was the only diamond. Seeing Rocksteady turn to greed based development was tough.Just ended their sterling reputation across the entire of gamerdom in one move.
I didn't know if there was PlayStation Direct yesterday but i knew there was nothing interesting for me, even Thcia really broke my heart and I have to ban that game for having very inappropriate contents.
I only play kids games.
@Mintie
I don't think so.
Capcom was in shambles during that time. Xbox tried to buy them.
@Green-Bandit Yeah, everyone wins regardless of platform that way. Here's hoping that's the case this year
