Now that we've all had time to process them, we want to know your thoughts on the recently revealed Dragon Age: The Veilguard. BioWare's RPG (or should we say action RPG?) turned out to be a major talking point amongst a wave of game announcements and updates from this summer's showcases.
Almost a whole decade after the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition, fans were handed a unexpectedly stylised, Marvel-esque cinematic trailer — and it didn't go down well. The video was absolutely torn to shreds on YouTube, and it divided opinion just about everywhere else.
Fortunately, a previously promised gameplay demonstration looked much better, although there are still plenty of concerns over the game's art direction, its move to all-action combat, and its assumed lack of dialogue options. Obviously, it's hard to properly judge a game that's still months away from launch, but discussions surrounding The Veilguard have still been incredibly heated.
So, what do you think of the all-new Dragon Age? Whether you're an existing fan of the franchise, or you're totally new to the series, have your say in our polls, and then explain yourself in the comments section below.

Played the first two but Inquisition has been in the backlog since it’s release… I should really play that before this one releases tbh 🤔
Not a DA fan but the new one looks really solid and its now on my watch list.
Unlike most people, I'm actually not dumb or childish enough to immediately write it off; its art style will take some time getting used too, and yes some of the gameplay sections can be questionable.. but we won't know that until we actually PLAY it, right? So yeah, I think it's quite funny - and pathetic - that people are already complaining this much, saying stuff like ''Bioware is officially dead'' or ''This does disgustingly alot like Fortnite" We've grown so entitled, so selfish and so greedy as a community... One of the main reasons I stopped using social media. People just can't seem to stop the negativity, and the moment someone says something positive that most other people hate.. the positive one gets swarmed by the negative ones. It's truly outrageous to be honest, but nothing to be done. These kinds of people... truly have no life.
Of course, there are also people who have legitimate concerns about the game; i'm not dismissing them, as concerns ARE valid in some aspects. However.. people first of all need to give it a chance, at the very least, before deciding a game is ''ultimate trash''.
@Maubari tell us how you really feel 🤣

I'm not sold at all, but I'm open to seeing more.
I'll wait till they show more of the RPG system that made the franchise an RPG. So far the gameplay reveal has displayed none of: Skill trees, character progressions, and gears/loot system.
Till then, in the same universe where we have a game like Baldur's Gate 3 as an RPG, in what way is Veilguard an acceptable showing?
@Maubari pretty good yeah 😎
@Cloud39472 I'm still surprised they haven't announced a Legendary Collection yet. I've been asking about that for over a year now lol.
The gameplay trailer looked pretty good to me, though I would have liked to have seen a wider range of gameplay events like a less scripted mission and a more character focussed conversation like you had at the keep in DA:I.
What I am less enthused by so far are the characters. I didn't initially warm to them or like many of their designs, but that may change as I find out more about them. Certainly too early to write them off.
As for the art style, I like it, and think it's preferable to aiming for photo-realism.
@colonelkilgore I'd definitely recommend playing through Inquisition. The story for Veilguard seems to be intrinsically tied to Inquisition; much more so than the first two games. Inquisition has a lot of filler/fetch-quest design, but the story is actually really great.
Also, @Maubari, I agree - the debate on the art style is pretty overblown. Dragon Age 2 had a cartoony/watercolor art style too that had blowback when it first came out. We all got over it.
@TheAmbienWalrus 🍻
@wildcat_kickz good to know 👊
Yeah it looks great to me. I’ll more than likely be getting it
@colonelkilgore mate inquisition is glorious! A return to form after DA2 which imo wasn’t very good at all. Inquisitions world is gorgeous even now
@Mikey856 I really need to lift it up the list of priorities for sure
It looks absolutely horrendous it looks worse than DA II and that's quite the accomplishment Origins is one of the greatest games ever made I don't know how we ended up here
I think I'd rather they have remade Dragon Age 1.
The PC Gamer preview didn't hold anything back. I'm no fan of the series so I don't have much of an opinion, but I do think it's interesting how far the pendulum swings with this series with each subsequent release.
I've played a decent amount of Origins and Inquisition and didn't particularly like either.
I'm excited.
Sure the cg trailer wasn't the best, but the gameplay and setting look excellent.
I was almost relieved when they said the settings were more linear than Inquisition. There's been a lot of open world stuff on my list already this year, with Erdtree on the way, so I'm definitely in the mood for something a little more linear in that regard.
But yeah, put me in the excited af list.
@colonelkilgore it’s certainly worth your time sir. Enjoy when ya get around to it ha
The obvious wait for release and some reviews.
@colonelkilgore
I quite liked DA:I and would think that it still holds up quite well today although it is nearly a decade since I completed it.
PS not as difficult as the guides would suggest, imo, although not a cake walk either.
the colorful , clean & vibrant era needs to end
@CaptD I’m gonna watch some reviews I think, see if it hooks my attention
It might be a day 1 purchase for me. Loved both Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition (got the Platinum on both), so I'm really hyped about this one.
Looks watered down, repetitive, shallow, and woke. I wish they would remaster Dragon Age Origins and maybe Dragon Age II too.
I get why they made the choice to nix the open world, but part of me doesn’t like that. Gives me ffxvi vibes and I really didn’t enjoy the structure of that game
It looks good to me.dragon age the veilguard looks excellent.one of my most hyped video games.word up son
@colonelkilgore
One of the locales has a very bleak feel, clearly based on a location not a million miles away from here (I won't spoil it because it is quite stunning). Perhaps more of a winter game because of that one location but hey sometimes you need to that something to get away from the current heatwave (joke, for us at least).
Really disinterested in the art style. Not interested at all and honestly sort of concerned with the art style the next Mass Effect game will take. BioWare doesn’t exactly have the reputation they had 10 years ago, so I’m not really holding my breath with this one.
What really is Dragon Age now that it's EA-ified? Origins started long before EA owned Bioware, and was intended as a spiritual successor of Baldur's Gate II, not bound to D&D rules (and licensing fees.) It kind of released as intended, and feels like Bioware's stab at BGIII all this time until Larian's actual BGIII. DA2 tried to be a party manager thing. DA:I tried to be....idk...what exactly it is. Now we have this that wants to be an action game... I find it weird how all these RPG series are just invented as button smashing action games today.
It doesn't look bad, it doesn't look good either. It looks flashy and stylish and a style that's not reminiscent of DA, and seems like a kind of generic action brawler with overly dramatic cinematics. I can't say I dislike it, but I can say I don't recognize it as a game connected to DA beyond alleged characters continuing and the facial blood spatter design.
@QiaraIris So much this. Same thing with FFXIV (I like the game a lot but it's not an RPG at all), it just seems like the trend in AAA development is take a game, make it an action either dodge-parry or button mash action game. Add "XP" that do nothing and level ups are basically the same as unlocks from progression, and call it "Action RPG!" When it's basically a PS2 era action platformer/brawler but with faux stats.
As an action RPG it looks really solid. But I've never played any of the Dragin Age games. So unless it's super newcomer friendly, I don't know if I'll pick it up yet
@OneWingedAngel I'd kill for a re-release of Origins at this point lol 😅
I don't have any issues at all with the art style and the new combat. I don't even mind that it's more linear than Dragon Age: Inquisition. I'm looking forward to it.
@NEStalgia You meant FFXVI though right? FFXIV is an online MMO and arguably one of the best MMO in the market right now.
I wouldn't even take it for free. It's very obvious the direction they went is heavily influenced in a certain way. This isn't Dragon Age. Remove the references and you can see it's one step above eurojank rpgs. It will fail and probably sink Bioware for good. EA is waiting to make another cut for the investors.
I only really liked the first one, and I read a lot of the books which were quite good. But I wasn’t a fan of the changing games after. Now that this is so far removed from that first game and style, I might enjoy it as a different fantasy action game.
@Maubari Just because you want to pretend you are better than people to make yourself feel superior doesn't change the fact you are as much of the problem as the people you subtley attacked. The game just looks bad and not a Dragon Age. It's a simple fact.
Promising game; bad demo.
If it's a very in-depth RPG, then I didn't see it. I saw a generic hack and slash where he fired one ability and first impressions matter and saying "oh the press saw the REAL game and it's an actual RPG with skill trees".
Well would've been nice if I saw it.
Im still surprised they didnt release origins and 2 on Ps4/5 like mass effect trilogy
@QiaraIris lol yes, I'm actually playing both simultaneously but my autocorrect automatically replaces ffxvi with FFXIV. Autocorrect has taste. 😂
@CrashBandicoat I have a similar experience. I don’t remember the Mo-Cap problem (I also played as female), but the game was the first in a sequence of bloated releases for the open world genre. I was really enjoying it, but the game was just too large and long and so I couldn’t keep up with it to the end. I’ve often felt like I should return to it, but at this point it’s so far out of my mind and many other games have taken its place in my backlog that I’d rather spend my time with.
This new Veilguard art style doesn’t really speak to me, but I can tolerate it if the game is good. I’ll keep an open mind also
I will say i've been disappointed.
The game does not look like dragon age. Each subsequent entry seem to veer further and further away from the vibe of origins.
These plastic models do not look appealing at all. Like we went from realistic, bloody and dark fantasy to plastic looking, all ages approved generic fantasy.
The combat looked uneventful as well. Just more average action stuff.
Honestly, i have not seen anything impressive at all. It looked awfully generic. It could be called Fantasy Age and i would believe it.
@CaptD I managed to platinum it back in the day. It was great at the time for sure. I sunk bare hours into it 👌
It looks pretty solid. I'm not really a Dragon Age fan but I'm interested to see how this one shapes up mostly because I want Bioware to get cracking on Mass Effect more than anything. That said I played Inquisition and liked it well enough so I'm willing to try this one.
Im curious to see what classes are going to be available and how the AI teammates work. They didn't do much in the trailer but the world looks nice.
This is not Dragon Age. It’s a hack and slash with RPG elements.
Remember using the birds eye view to strategize and give your companions specific tasks?
@colonelkilgore it’s the best one! Origins is great. 2 is hot garbage. Inquisition is why there’s another game on the horizon.
@AhmadSumadi yeah I remember really liking Origins and being very disappointed in 2… seems like a frikkin lifetime ago though.
This is a game that I'll wait for reviews from multiple sources on. The trailer did nothing positive for me, but that doesn't mean the finished game will be bad. I am a bit weary of Western developed games in the past couple years. Looking at you, Suicide Squad.
I'm more interested now that I know its not an open world game. I just don't have enough time for those. As long as it has a good story and is fun to play I'm on board.
I platinum’d the first three. I won’t be picking up this one at launch though, kinda hate the direction they’ve taken the setting. I was already disappointed by Inquisition but the last 10 years of non-game content made me realise this setting just isn’t for me anymore. The aesthetics just fell off a cliff. I miss Origins/Awakening and even II’s style.
@Lavishturtle it had to be said, thanks for calling this out, this @Maubari guy's post was disrespectful and smug - everyone's opinions about this game are all simply based on what EA have given us, everyone knows that! For my two cents I really don't like the art and character design direction at all.
Not a fan but am interested on behalf of others. I see the appeal, I know enough about the series and dipped into Origins/Inquisition.
I think it's going in some fair directions. Tactics I mean some handle it better than others most care about action. The story telling is great, the worlds are clear of Dragon Age.
The art is like many things odd at first but when realise oh that's how they modernised or presented it and Dragon Age or the lighting mostly it does look good. Just the right angles of the environment/characters.
I’m just gonna wait on reviews.
Not a fan of DA and will skip this one because it doesn't look like my cup of tea. Sorry EA.
Origins was the only one really worth a damn, and I replayed it numerous times. Get back to that level of storytelling and they'll have a game on their hands.
Sadly, Bioware is not what it was. The old guard has moved on.
I really enjoyed DAO and DAII, but I stalled with the third game because I was waiting to get it on PS4. Now that there's finally a new one I'll likely power through it, right after I'm done with Rebirth and Sea of Stars.
@colonelkilgore DA:I and its expansions are great! I'm excited for this new release as I've been a fan of Dragon Age since Origins.
