The time has arrived to rate another Geoff Keighley bonanza. Of his three yearly shows, Gamescom Opening Night Live has usually proven to be the weakest, but did the 2022 version buck the trend? Share your thoughts in this Push Square poll.
We already knew about a handful of the announcements going into the show, like a new look at Hogwarts Legacy, more Sonic Frontiers news, and an appearance from The Callisto Protocol. Open world zombie game Dead Island 2 was also re-revealed, but that leaked last week.
Surprise reveals included New Tales from the Borderlands and Atlas Fallen.
That's a quick look at what Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022 had to show, but click through the following link for a complete round-up of all PS5, PS4 reveals. Now you are fully caught up, rate the event in our poll and expand on your thoughts in the comments below.

The worst event of all time. Genuinely. No hyperbole.
Much like Summer Game Fest I thought it was mostly fine, but two hours is just way too long. You hit the hour mark and you're like "holy sh*t we still have an hour of this left?!"
calisto and hogwarts where the stand outs.
but we have already seen those games so yeah...
worst geoff show so far.
The only good thing was Lies of P, other than that zzzzzzz
Where Winds Meet and Atlas Fallen looks like sure winners to me!!!
Pretty poor, to the stage that I think anything other than a big 3 presentation/stream I'll give it a miss.
Only thing that got me even remotely excited was the Pro Dualsense, none of the games revealed really did much for me at all.
Very very poor. The few that were any good, were the games we've already seen.
That Kojima podcast reveal has to be the highlight.
Shows like Summer Games Fest and Gamescom ONL make me realize how little games threre are I actually care about.
The only game in the entire show I potentially care about is Sonic Frontiers and even that one only if it turns out good enough
I thought it was pretty poor personally. I respect the hell out of Geoff, but he's putting on three of these events a year now, without the content to back them up really.
They just all blur together and run far too long.
That said, a couple of interesting games on show. I like the look of the new DualSense.
I think we're seeing the return of AA tier games now. So many new IPs from studios that clearly have a bit of a budget behind them. Geoff's show aren't really for the big publishers because they have their own streams to do something.
Kojima Podcast. No more words needed...
Callisto, lies of p and high on life saved the show for me
Dead Island 2 made a boring second hour brilliant but yes, far too long.
It was ok because I had my expectations in check. Otherwise I would say it was pretty poor...
Didn't watch it but friend did and he said it was a massive L so I am going to take his word for it.
@redd214 It is a sad state of affairs when the most exciting thing from a two hour presentation is a new controller.
Everyone agrees that car was the best part, right?
It was okish and them I'm generous. Dead island 2 was fun to see again. But outside of that? To much we've seen already and the 3 million souls like clone games meh.
@mariomaster96 When Dorfromantik on Switch is the most interesting game to you, then you know that your taste is totally different of that of the masses. Poor show
The first half of tolerable.
The second half was embarrassing aside from Where Winds Meet.
Hideo Kojima announces a podcast and Keighley shows off a Pokemon car. Are you f*****g serious?
Trash like the other showcases thus far outside of few announcements. Kicking the can further down to Sony. Please save me Jim and Hermen(lol).
It was poor for me. And thats because the concept is so scattershot.
Very short trailers that most of the time dont actually contain gameplay.
Then an award, more trailers, a car (wtf), more trailers.
They went to fast with stuff that didn't really show anything.
I am not gonna watch next year. Ill read it the day after on sites like this.
It was one of those conferences where in about an hours time i will remember, at most, 5 games that was shown.
That was a poor showing. Sorry Geoff, you sold me nothing. The most exciting thing about the show is that soon I’ll actually be able to preorder Hogwarts Legacy!
It was okay. Some nice games were shown. Lies of P and Atlus Fallen were my highlights. Really enjoyed Hogwarts and Gotham Knights also.
Sonic Frontiers had a better trailer too which is what they should have showed us in the first place.
The thing I didn't like about the show is what is up with those awards?! He has the gaming awards show for that. And Kojima, why was he on there?! That could have been posted as a Tweet.
Was torn between Okay & Poor but went with Okay. It was definitely I think his best show but I don’t need or want to see games I’ve seen multiple times already. The pacing is some how still terrible. Also the pikachu car commercial, random astronaut, and nonsensical awards were unneeded.
Overall, I thought it was pretty good. Most of the trailers actually had some gameplay. Nothing worse than the all CG game reveals (are these games or movies?). When Dead Island 2 is your big end of show game, though, you can tell that this wasn't a show full of heavy hitters.
who are the guys that said it was going to better than state of plays? HAHAHAHA
It's like expecting an EA showcase to be good.
I thought it was just alright. Not enough gameplay on anything though, even the gameplay segments felt too short.
Didn't think it was so bad, but wasn't fully paying attention either.
Other than a few good games, it was pretty meh overall.
I do prefer streams that just show games and don't have a guy on a stage blabbing, but that's just me.
Where Winds Meet was the best part of the show I thought. Lies of P also looked good. Hogwarts looks great even if the trailer was a bit underwhelming this time around. Many trailers for new games with no gameplay though. When are devs going to understand you need some gameplay in your trailer to introduce the game?
Although Kojima came through with a podcast announcement so I guess we found a new low.🤣
Overall though it was fine.
Edit: Oh and Sonics trailer looked pretty good as well.
I like Geoff, I really do. And I’m sure he’ll deliver a great show some day, but that was not today.
Thinking about this, I’d actually like to see Geoff host a dedicated Sony event with first party exclusives. I’m sure that would beat seeing Jim Ryan on stage.
Pinocchio game was the highlight.
All the people who were disappointed - what did you expect? More known IP’s, less space games? Genuinely curious to know.
I thought it was pretty good, Killer Klowns was a highlight for me, and some games look intriguing… but damn, the Hollywood-style trailers have taken over, and it’s almost impossible to differentiate between the games, when every trailer is built up in the same way, with the same generic music + every other games has a space theme.
I fell asleep watching it.
Monkey island! Need I say more?
Why have an event when really you can have a back to back marketing video streamed without the pointless presenters. I stopped at the frequent reference to indie developers making strange/weird games.
I honestly thought it was pretty good. Probably my favorite Gamescom showing of the last few years
If you're a fan of dark and/or dystopian themes, extreme violence, gore, and profanity/vulgarity, this has been your year as far as these gaming shows are concerned. If you're a gamer who prefers a more rounded selection, it's as dry as a lakebed in the Western US right now. I own both a Series X and PS5 and frankly neither has come close to justifying the investment for this console generation for me so far. And looking at what's on offer, that won't be improving for the foreseeable future.
I was not impressed. The only thing that made me laugh was the piddling applause when Lies of P was announced as a Day One GamePass title. 💀💀💀
Started strong but dipped off quite quickly. To be expected really, way too long.
I'm honestly happy I forgot about this after reviewing what it had to offer.
This biggest issue that I have with games today is that while being somewhat high quality the VAST majority just run together and I can’t remember what is what or what name belongs to which game.
Nothing really stands out, so many remind me of other games. That everywhere game gave me Fortnite vibes and some other one reminded me of a combination Destiny and Warframe.
Show was alright. Too much cut-scenes and too little gameplay like usual. At times it seemed like one big ad for Gamepass, but I guess paid advertising comes with the territory when it comes to this thing.
Excited for: Lies of P, Outlast Trials, Moonbreaker, Callisto Protocol, Scars Above
Curious about (but will have to see more): Wyrdsong, Dead Island 2, Return to Monkey Island, Lords of the Fallen, Atlas Fallen
Does anyone give a **** about Kojimas podcast though? I mean I like his games too, but Geoff seems to worship the guy.
Danzig during The Lord's of the Fallen trailer was rough. The trailer looked great, but the song did not fit the tone. Agreed with Sammy that Geoff doesn't have the content to pull off three 2-hour shows a year.
@MathiasBS I was hoping for something about Showa American Story. Preferably a release date. Even more preferably, launching onto PS+.
It was good.lots of games revealed. Word up son
Trash. Only good thing was lies of p. Stole the show and should have been the closer.
It was Very Good for me. A decent amount of RPG's for me. Gotham Knights got moved up,Atlas Fallen,Where Winds Meet look good, Honaki Star Rail I have hopes for a console release.Sonic, Lies of P also worth mentioning
I thought it was okay. Some good game reveals in there, so I wasn't left disappointed.
I had a great time reading up on the news, didn't watch the event live sadly.
I'll definitely be pre-ordering Hogwarts Legacy, The Callisto Protocol, and maybe even Gotham Knights. Everything else I either don't care about or am interested in but will wait a few years for dirt cheap sales.
Pre-Orders:
Gotham Knights
Hogwarts Legacy
The Callisto Protocol
Wait for Sales:
Atlus Fallen
Dead Island 2
Goat Simulator 3
Lies of P
New Tales from the Borderlands
Phantom Hellcat
Sonic Frontiers
The Lords of Fallen
It wasn't great was it. But considering none of the heavy hitters were there, it's maybe not a big surprise.
Still some gems: Release date for Monkey Island, Where the winds meet looks interesting. Only trailer that got my non-gamer wife to stop reading her book. Atlas Fallen has potential. I guess Callisto looked good as well.
But 2 hours was way too long for the content they had.
The DualSense Edge controller, Sonic Frontiers and maybe Goat Simulator 3 are the only good parts of the event. Others were meh
With most of these games (barring some of those that have already been unveiled) I’ll need to see more of what they offer before I make a decision. Not terribly thrilled about the prospect of more souls or soul-likes though cause I’m kinda concerned that the genre’s at risk of overexposure after peaking with Elden Ring.
Too many CG trailers, which do nothing for me at all. A fair few titles I want to see gameplay for and some of the gameplay shown seemed to chug but that might've been the stream I was watching.
Who am I to say if it was good or not. I hate most stuff in life, so the little it had for me was welcome. It's just a 2 hour long commercial after all.
It was mush better then i expected!
@Greifchen SURELY, Kojima should have called this podcast, Kojima Poductions
@KidBoruto Or get a few as Xmas presents? Spend even less money
@KidBoruto I am with you, I will wait for a sale to get Sonic Frontiers. But that's positive, because before the new trailer, I wasn't even considering it.
These Jeff hosted events continue to get worse and worse and more just a venue for marketing each time with its viewership numbers.
If anything, it shows how much the industry has moved away from a for the players fandom, and instead a corporate machine laid bare. The days of trade shows with artists wanting to show their work, allow it to be played, and mingle with those that finance their lives have been replaced with corporate schills ushering out there most hip looking PR dept employees to talk about a game they haven't played, or to simply craft a CGI trailer that doesn't represent or convey the game whatsoever or over promises everything.
The rock last time was cringe, the mini cooper this time was cringe, Kojima is an overhyped dinosaur, and Jeff just seems to laugh at how absurd it all is and how ridiculous it is that we continue to tune in thinking it will be any different than the garbage shows prior.
@Smithylfc2008 I would ask my family to buy me one of the games, but they refuse to pay $70 per game.
What I can do is ask for Best Buy or Amazon Gift cards and stockpile them.
My gaming backlog is in the hundreds, so I'm in no hurry to play any of them really.
