Dying Light 2 has now been out on PlayStation 5 and PS4 for exactly a week, allowing those who purchased it a decent chunk of time to form a proper opinion on the open world experience. Reviews from critics were somewhat mixed, and we awarded the game a 7/10 in our Dying Light 2 PS5 review.
Here's what we had to say in conclusion: "Dying Light 2 is a super solid follow-up to the 2015 original, building upon its fantastic gameplay loop with new traversal options for even more parkour fun. It's extremely disappointing, however, that the narrative and open world promises Techland made in the lead up to launch haven't been realised."
Now, one week later, what do you think of Dying Light 2? Do you agree with the general consensus, reckon it's much better, or maybe worse than what's been said? Share your own review score in our poll and expand on your thoughts in the comments below.

We must not have played the same game because I am finding the story and characters completely captivating. I've experience sidequests longer than the main story quests, and I am just having a blast. 35+ hours into the game, I am only 1/3 through the main story with tons to do. Definitely a 9/10 for me.
It's a 7 for me. The gameplay is it's strongest contender, initially the movement felt really sluggish compared to the first game. But I got used it and feels great. Weapon modding and combat are fun as well. Massive props to the level design team, navigating around is incredibly free flowing and immersive. I also like the choices they give you in the narrative, but reviews seems to say they don't matter in the end.
Some characters have their charm, but my God most of them are FLAT. Overall solid experience and enjoyable.
That's a good idea for a poll. I'm not sure if you guys have done polls about the communitys review score before but I like it.
Nice job.
I haven’t started it yet but I was a bit gutted when I heard there were no guns. It could work out for the better but it just doesn’t seem right not to have guns in a zombie game. I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve actually played it though. Trying to finish off the Legacy of Thieves Collections first. Beat Uncharted 4 on Crushing last night… that was fun… 👀😩
@BritneyfR_ee Good job on UC4 crushing. I'm glad I had my save file for that to import into Legacy of Thieves as I wasn't looking forward to doing that all over again
Sh*t graphics, 1/10.
This was my most anticipated game-especially after how much I loved the 1st game. I would give Dying Light 2 a 7/10. The game play is great, but everything outside of that I found to be boring. The story doesn’t do anything for me & the characters in the game, the less said about them the better. Still only about 15 hours in. Also not a fan of the no guns in this game. Finding guns in the original Dying light game was so much fun & tipped the balance of taking on the volatiles at night. But yeah a 7/10 for me.
Waiting for a price drop. Between Horizon and elden ring this month alone too much to play and not including JRPGS like monark and edge of eternity for February
Ha, almost the same number of votes for the grade and for the amount of hours played. But more than 40% answered „I haven’t played“. So…
Pretty much agree on a 7 (probably 20-25 hrs in)
I pretty much your standard open world game but with admittedly great parkour (I say it does it better than mirrors edge......well at least when you start unlocking skills and "stuff")
Side missions were actually decent(in story ....gameplay doesnt deviate)....one involving a dog sticks out.
Theres a bit of puzzles in unlocking "areas" to break up the rest of game. And some safe cracking which makes you actually pay attention to collectables.
But every thing is just a pretty standard open world game......does what it says on the tin but nothing more.
Playing on a PRO I keep on getting audio drop outs which means a portion of the time.I have no idea on what/why I doing something in a quest.
I get a feeling Ill probably feel similar about Horizon.....(the standard open world affair.......As long I dont expect more......I guess it will be a serviceable but predictable ala DL2)
I’m enjoying the gameplay, it’s pretty solid and fun..I’ve come across a few bugs where I’ve had to quit the game and load back in again, however my biggest issue is the trade off in graphics to enable 60fps. I really struggle to play any game nowadays at 30fps as I’ve been spoilt so much by new releases, but to have 1080p graphics is just such a let down. I’d love it to be patched in at some point, but I’m not holding my breathe.
Probably between a 6 and 7 - I've put about 12 or so hours in, and kinda ready to give up. It's not bad per se; just after such a long time in development, and after so many years on from the great original, I can't hep but feel disappointed. Also, the 1080p performance mode is really hurting my eyes.
I think its great, a solid 8 ,haven't come across any bugs or glitches at all,the story and characters are fine have experienced far worse ,the music is also brilliant and night time sections tense ,it also looks great on ps5.
A 7 so far for me. I thought the prologue was really good, now I'm in the kind of lull where I don't have any decent perks or equipment and it's a little bit repetitive. Hoping it picks up again.
@render Thanks 😊
I had a PS4 save file for UC4 but it didn’t import all the trophies. It imported some but not the hard or crushing trophies or any of the misc or combat ones. I can only think I saved over the wrong 100% file by mistake. Or it glitched. Not good! So I’ve completed UC4 twice now on Crushing. I enjoyed it though, mostly.
Luckily, my Lost Legacy 100% save did import most of the trophies (including Crushing). So I decided to play it on Explorer with unlimited ammo, bullet slowdown and auto-lock with the silenced pistol (auto head shots). It feels like I’m playing as John Wick 😁 Perfect way to end this brilliant collection.
They really did a great job with the remasters. I tried playing UC4 on the PS4 to compare and I finally understand why people complain about frame rates so much. I never noticed it before but it’s very noticeable to me now.
@jmac1686 having played it i thought a 7 was a bit harsh, considering some of the bumf that scores higher, but its a personal opinion, I love these types of games ,massive amount of content in a great looking world, offers value for money in my opinion, better than a 3hr game hidden behind extreme difficulty, but those games always score highly ,because reviewers feel if they don't, they will just be told to git gud.
@BritneyfR_ee I had 5 save files for UC4 which popped various trophies as I imported them. I was missing 19 still though which were things like 20 headshots from a rope etc which I must have used chapter select for. If you've used chapter select that doesn't save back to the original save file as it gives you the option to create a new one which I guess I didn't do.
Guess you are right about your crushing play through though as you would have had a save file for that. At least you've got one now in case they do another remaster down the line 😆
@BearFut_1800 Ugh 1080p? I am still unsure why to double the frame rate, so many developers have to cut the graphics to 1/4 (4K to HD)...I feel like the math does not add up. Also I can't understand why 1080p is still a thing on so many PS5 releases.
I played the first one and loved it, easily a 9 from me however I haven't played this yet so I can't give it anything. Based on all accounts it's quite buggy and I know my mate hates it so I'm gonna hold off for a little while and see how it goes.
Oh sorry to go off Topic but I can't access anything on the Playstation Store at all. Remember that Article you published in December 2020? well it's doing that again. I just keep getting: This probably isn't what you're looking for... regardless of what game I try to look at.
@frankmcma yeah it’s really disheartening. I feel like getting games to play at 60fps is the best thing about the new generation of consoles and graphics become less important, as I now always opt for performance mode…however other games still look great in this mode, look at Demon’s Souls, Deathloop…amazing. 1080p however just shouldn’t be an acceptable thing now, not even on the PS4 😂
Even I must admit, I'm glad I decided to give it a go despite mixed reviews.
On ps5 I have had zero bugs or crashes. The story isn't nearly as bad as suggested and not any different than most cliche video game stories. Very "gamey." But so are most. The only valid critique I share is that side quest and activity voice acting is trash.
Aside from that this game is so fun to play and to navigate that it really is refreshing. The parkour alone makes any stereotypical icon chasing or collectible hunting far more fun and keeps the gameplay loop fresher longer.
It's a solid 8-8.5 for me
*An important side note here though that I must agree with, on the PS5, 1080p to reach 60fps without the ray tracing affects here is really not acceptable. This is just them poorly optimizing this engine. It's not nearly as blurry as the original, but merely the fact that on PS5 it shares the same resolution as a 6-year-old game with a slightly updated engine is just not a good look.
Aside from that though, if you are on the fence and mildly liked the traversal in the original, I'd give it a go!

Took a break from Dying Light 2 on Wednesday, came back to it yesterday and played it for maybe an hour, then I suddenly just lost all interest, though this tends to happen for me whenever I play a game nonstop for 4 or more days. So I'll probably take a couple more days break from Dying Light 2 to play Sifu and replay Kena.
I will say this though, the more I play Dying Light 2, the more I wish it played more like the first Dying Light, they've tweaked and tinkered with things from the first game that really did not need to be messed with, and it really hampered my enjoyment of Dying Light 2, hell I'm considering replaying Dying Light & The Following DLC to get that incredible Dying Light fix I'm not getting with Dying Light 2.
@JustPlainLoco just curious, what didn't you like changed from dying light. As I just couldn't bring myself to finish it, it just got so repetitive, and the blurry visuals and bizarre color scheme just made it hard to play. Although I didn't even try playing it until last year.
I like it so far... gave it an 8 given my experience thus far.
Playing on easy mode just running the story... that's all I care about anyway.
Never played the first one so I had no expectations.
@KundaliniRising333 - Well for starters; the story & characters are incredibly average, probably worse than the first game's. Not a fan of how it plays more like an RPG in terms of gear, weapons & crafting, it doesn't really suit this type of game IMO, and while the combat is better when dealing with human enemies, dealing with infected sometimes doesn't feel as satisfying as the first game, in the first game if you swung your weapon there was a high chance you would always hit more than one enemy if you aimed your attack correctly, but in Dying Light 2 it feels like swinging your weapon will almost always ONLY hit one enemy at a time even when they are grouped up together, unless you're wielding a two-handed weapon. I didn't even mention the bugs & glitches, mostly consisting of occasional texture pop-ins, certain prompts refusing to work (Survival Sense doesn't always activate when I want it to) and one time when speaking to a few NPC's the camera suddenly focused on a wall as they continue talking (Turning the game off and then back on fixed the issue).
Also the 'Immunity' mechanic is pretty inconsistent during the daytime, going inside some buildings / houses, the immunity meter will activate and other times it doesn't, plus if light shines through a window and you're standing in the light, and the room is well lit up, then the immunity meter SHOULDN'T activate, and while the immunity meter is an interesting mechanic, they really should have ditched it, night-time and dark places are already dangerous enough without adding an insta-kill timer.
Oh and I HATE the loyalty / trust system between the PK's and Survivors, I wish it worked more like Days Gone's camp trust, where you can build trust with both factions gradually by doing basic task and missions for them, the PK's faction skills mostly suck IMO, but LV4 gives you access to a Crossbow but the highest your alignment can go is LV7, and I don't want to side with the PK's for ONE notable skill, when the survivor's skills all make traversal even better and is arguably more necessary than what the PK's offer, hell I never used traps in the first game, and that's the bulk of what the PK's skills offer you.
@kyleforrester87 Is it really that bad it looked fine to me.
The game is clearly a bit worse than the first one! But I still think it's pretty solid
It looks really wack to me. I was kinda intrigued at first but after seeing gameplay, I'm completely turned off. The story and writing is bottom tier trash and the gameplay looks kinda fun I guess. It looks janky, generic zombies, generic characters,... Not for me but I can see the appeal for some people.
Played what seemed like a long tutorial part, played a few hours with some friends. Won’t play this again. After playing the first I don’t want to play the second anymore. I give it a 6.5
A 7 as of now but will probably be an 8 for me after patches and content updates.
@Indoorhero what game made you choose not to Pre-order games anymore?
If I may ask.
The game is very good verging on great, it's got issues sure but the rest of everything else more than makes up for it. For starters it's fun to just run around and climb or go exploring, so pretty much job done right there. I think it looks ok on PS5 performance mode, sure it's only 1080p but it looks fairly good, like a very well made PS4 pro game would have looked but at 60fps instead of 30.
And I'm not sure why people whinge about the story so much, it's not that great sure, but it's also not completely ass and you actually like some of the characters especially towards the end.
For me the story on these games are irrelevant anyway as this game is all about exploring and core gameplay.
It does get repeative about 20 hours or so in, but you still end up playing anyway for some reason. Maybe just at the moment there isn't much else in my to play pile, or maybe it's just addictive. Either way money well spent for a very enjoyable first 20 hours.
I’m thinking six and a half. So that includes seven, it’s between six and a seven. It’s verging on seven; whilst better than six. And that is why you don’t do things by half
takes too long to level. zombies take too many hits. they finally added options to remove blur effects but it only reveals how utterly ugly and low-res the graphics are. fallout 76 looks better. yes, i said that! this is NOT next gen title for PS5, at all, like many thought it'd be. it's 1080p and thats unacceptable for PS5. if they bump the res to 1440p and add a bit higher textures? oh it'd look excellent. but then, they gotta balance the weapons and level up system. im tired of games releasing in a rushed, unfinished "beta" state. AAA titles, no less. most i know agree.
fix the graphics and resolution and balance the game... i'd give it an 8/10. but in its current state? 4/10.
Hovering around 9 myself as i think its fantastic.
@Pixelated Doesn't take long to level at all especially if you go out at night for bonus points. Yeah are you getting new more powerful weapons and modding them? I'm taking down Zombies like a hot knife through butter. As for visuals yeah you're trolling saying FO76 looks better as its packed with detail, has near flawless 60fps, is very dense and has excellent lighting. If you want 4K then play on Reslution mode.
@frankmcma Yeah you're not very bright if you think 76 has better graphics.
@frankmcma I'm lost as to why there are people whining about 1080p still being a thing which isn't even bad lol. If it was 900p or 720p I could understand.
Over 70 hours in and still loving it. Definitely in my top ten ever as it’s just more Dying Light 1 which is all I ever wanted.
I'm giving this an 8 at the moment. I liked the the opening mission/tutorial but when the map opened and I was kinda able to do what I want, I was overwhelmed but after a couple of hours of just running around and killing things and just exploring it all comes into focus and I worked out how I want to play this game. So far I'm really enjoying it, I like the crafting and the gear ect. The story is keeping me going and I'm interested in seeing where it goes and I'm liking the characters aswell. There is a few things that need sorting like not having full 4k at 60fps, I'm confused how they haven't managed to achieve this and I'm hoping it is something they plan on sorting very soon because without 60fps this game chugs. When it comes to weapons I'm actually starting to understand it now, you have less chance of hitting multi Enemies with a single handed weapon than a 2 handed weapon which make sence as the 2 handed is bigger. Different weapons also have a different feel too, 1H slashing is fast and light, 1H blunt is heavier and feels abit more weighty and has a thud with the hits. 2h is generally slower due to the weight. At first I thought it was odd but it makes sense really. Overall I'm enjoying it and I'm looking forward to play more.
@Pixelated Yah I think you just haven't played enough to really see where leveling takes place. The whole way its designed actually makes progression feel real, needed , and worth seeking out, otherwise stamina, and health limit your ability to do much. The finite durability of much of the loot also makes the often times annoying loot and rarity systems we see in games more meaningful, as you can't just pick your favorite weapon and armor and ride it through the whole game, which essentially makes loot pointless.
In fact, the game really incentivizes engagement with all of its activities in order to do so, which is a FARCRY from random meaningless filler side activities that are essentially a pointless creed in most open world games these days......
@frankmcma if you compare to pc you realise that a RTX 2070 (which is basically what a PS5 is) can only run modern games in 1440p, and since they don't offer that option they need to cut it back to 1080p for 60fps, especially in games like where the engine isn't the best. 4k is just too much for most modern games unless you are using DLSS and something like a 3070 or above then you can push to or past 4k60Fps with decent graphics otherwise anything less is 1440P land.
My point: the ps5 is underpowered, we are going to need a pro version and quick as well. its woefully underpowered for 2022 especially once the new PC cards come out at the end of this year we will be 2 generations behind then already.
This is one more example that we need AMD FSR on consoles asap, specially if we want RT with better performance..
Around 70h in, been playing it on PC with all 5x Ray Tracing modes ON which really gives a nice touch and much more natural looking with all the lightning at @1440p with DLSS performance.
Unfortunately my save just bugged out completely, time clock is gone (can only see it on the map with stuck time at 8:46am), and can't sleep anymore.. I believe was due to joining some co-op session.. anyone got this issue?
Pretty much a bug fest at the moment with the online stuff specially - guess will need to wait for another patch and see.. anyway I'm almost done with the game for the moment
