It's been a whole month since the launch of Tales of Arise, the latest entry in Bandai Namco's long running role-playing series. The game went down extremely well with critics, and it now sits as one of the highest rated titles of 2021. Needless to say, Tales of Arise has been a big hit for the Japanese publisher. It sold over one million copies in just a few days after its release, immediately making it the fastest selling Tales game ever.
As far as we're concerned, it's deserving of its success. The title actually surpassed our expectations, and we awarded it an impressive 9/10 in our Tales of Arise PS5 review. We concluded: "With its picturesque landscapes instilling a real sense of adventure, it's easily one of the strongest, most cohesive Tales games to date. Dramatic cutscenes and memorable character moments help sell an intriguing story, while a satisfying combat system becomes more and more engaging as your party powers up. A fantastic, modernised journey with all the rewarding qualities of a classic JRPG."
But that's enough from us — we want to know what you think of Tales of Arise. What review score would you give it? As always, vote in our polls, and then cement your verdict in the comments section below.

Haven't gotten too far from the game yet but I'm really enjoying Arise. I got to say that this may be one of the few tales game that has a dark plot. I do love the characters though not as much as Xillia but they are great. Oh and Rinwell is my favorite character so far. Can't give a definitive rating yet but I feel that this will be one of my GoTY
@ShogunRok This article is an exception to the no review scores rule right? We don't have to worry if we actually comment what score we'd give the game?
So far 9. I haven't played too much but the combat is just too good
@TowaHerschel7 Not sure what rule you're referring to, but yeah, everyone's free to discuss the review score that they'd give the game.
It put me off when I saw how the battle system works. It looks a bit of a mess combat wise to know what’s going on
53 hours in and enjoying it a lot. I think I'm near the end so can say I'd give it an 8. Lovely combat, decent characters and story and a lovely range of landscapes. I do miss the bawdy humour of previous tales games though. Graces cracked me up
Haven't played it yet. It looks decent, but I'm not really excited enough about it to pay $60 + tax when it'll be available for a fraction of that price in several months to a year/
Just entered the 4th realm. Looks and plays like a dream. Best Tales game since Symphonia on the Gamecube!
love it so far. loved it from the jump. agree with Push Square's review.
everything is improved upon while still retaining the feel of a Tales game.
couldn't ask for a better step to move this franchise forward.
Have played it about 65h and it's one of the best JRPGs I've played
The first 35 hours are excellent.
The last 10-15 hours are miserable.
I gave it a 7 overall.
I give the score a 10. Love every.... single... thing about it. The story, the characters, the music, the skits, combat, Mystic Artes, etc.
The characters remind me some in Persona 5. Like there's some similarities to them with the way they talk and behave, like Law reminds me of Ryuji (also a little bit like Nagi in Scarlet Nexus), Rinwell reminds me of Futaba, Kisara as Makoto, Dohalim as Yusuke, etc.
I had Ratchet & Clank down as my game of the year but this game is so good, I'm finding it hard to pick which one comes out on top. Love this game so much I'm definitely going to make time to replay it again someday. Not done yet though as I'm chasing the Platinum trophy
6.3 out of 17 turkey bananas.
I want to pose an additional question to those who have played multiple tails of games. Where would you place this one compared to other entries in the series? Is it better than past entries? Worse?
I gave it a generous 7. It looked nice and played nice but the dialogue and story was bleh.
12 onions out of 15
Contains XP boosts so the game must be grinder than necessary. I'm scoring it 7 out of 10 FIFAS 😊
Started off sooooo well until you reach the 2nd half... Left a REALLY bad impression after an amazing start.
6.5/10.
I played 60 hours and I quite enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought I would, its only the 5th game I day 1'd this year.
I found it still too much a taditional JRPG in structure. That's probably good for some people, but a negative for me since I've been playing basically different variants of the same game since FF7/Wild Arms.
I think it could do with more focus on player skill in combat, and less focus on level. Character build variety and options, and more modernised side quests.
The story and dialogue is all a bit dull at times too unfortunately.
I'm happy that it's been so successful for them, as it is hit and miss overall with some JRPGs, but the demo turned me off enough to not get it even though I was really looking forward to it.
I may give it another shot at some point if I can get it cheap, but the cheese factor of some of the dialogue even though it's supposed to be more mature didn't help. The worst part for me was how much of the dialogue/cutscenes were done with no dialogue where you had to just sit there and read everything with still shots of characters like in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. With so many RPGs (and even JRPGs) having hundreds/thousands of lines of dialogue, there's no reason for it. It just comes off as them being cheap and lazy to be honest. Scarlet Nexus doesn't do traditional cutscenes either, but at least everything has recorded dialogue, so I'm good with that.
.. 30ish hours to do the first half.. It should have finished there.. I haven't bothered with the second half... Taking a loooong break before tackling it again!
9, Really good but not the best I don't think, a little to mushy for me to call it the best especially since it's always the same types of overly mushy interactions between the two primary characters, definitely a little heavy on the dialogue side. I do miss some of the things that have now been streamlined, never realized it until I played Zestiria again in regards to equipment upgrading etc and directional combat moves.
Also really didn't like the aerial combat moves, playing on Manuel it causes a lot of lost momentum from missing and were a lot of enemies were they were pretty useless
10/10 and game of the year (or kena)
Not like there's much else to rival it this year so far
Gave it an 8. Great game but I felt like there wasn't really anything done to evolve the series forward.
Having an absolute blast with it and put nearly forty hours in so far!
Personally at the moment id give it a 9 but maybe after feeling so let down by the last two Tales games I played I feel extra relieved and excited that the series is back on form and I'm just being extra generous.
Tales Of Graces and Tales Of Abyss have always been my favourite but with this game it might of just reached those heights for me.
@ChrisDeku Hard disagree. It sounds more like you're burnt out with the JRPG genre which is fine, but the genre is fine as-is, last thing fans of the genre want is even more games trying to change JRPG's into a completely new and unrelated genre...
Tons of fun and a must play if you are a fan of Tales games and jRPGs in general.
Whatever "number" represents that to you - that is the score.
Love JRPGs but this was a 7/10 at best for me.
I gave it a 9. Kinda reminds me of Ghost of Tsushima - both games don't do anything new for the genre they represent but what they do do, they execute exceptionally well.
I am still forming an opinion on the game so I didn't vote. I picked it up last Sunday and have maybe like 2 ish hours clocked, maybe 3. It's good so far, but hard to form an opinion so early.
However, Metroid Dread swooped in on Friday and that put Tales of Arise on hold until I finish that.
Got out of the first area. Have not played it since that first weekend when it came out. Don't know why I'm not bothering to get back into it. I was looking really forward to it to. Guess I'm not just into JRPG's like I was growing up.
The game is amazing but it really has some issues with the dificulty when you get to bosses and the healing items are extremly expensive, its almost like they're pushing you to buy the boosts.
@TowaHerschel7 I'm a fan of the genre and would have no issue with new things.
On my unique Rainbow-scale, I rate it Orange
None.
Video games don’t need a ‘score’
Alrighty, been waiting to give my opinion on this one. It starts off very strong, combat is fun, story & characters intriguing, epic soundtrack. But like a few others here, I found the further the game went on, the worse it got. The areas, music, enemies, story all suffered as the game went on. Another gripe is that the towns you visit are void of life, even the populated ones. Most NPC's just stand around like a stunned mullet, feels very ps1 era.
It was decent though, I'd give it a 7/10.
I was excited, but then played the demo and saw it was just another Graces/Zestiria/Berseria style over substance combat style. It is the definition of more of the same with slightly better graphics.
It's a completely average run of the mill JRPG. It lost the diferentiating factor of the series, which was the 2D combat and now presents itself in a 3D action field where many other JRPG's do a better job.
In short, there is nothing worthy of note here. Seems like it wasn't Baba holding back the series, but the whole team, which is unfortunate. The series might never come back to the heights of Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia.
Probably an 8, I felt like alphens arts weren't as good as previous tales hero's and the story could have been better. Fely like a rip off of the xillia storyline Plus the fishing got introduced a bit late in the game. Definetly better than zesteria and berseria and some nice easter eggs etc. Hopefully they remaster xillia 1 and 2.
I really enjoyed this game. Without saying too much, the ending overstayed its welcome IMO. I really wanted to see the ending so I bogged through just to get to that moment that all of us wanted to see. So after 65 hours I would give it a 9. My second favorite RPG this year behind Ys 9.
What's not to love when you have the "Beach Time Triple Pack"?
@Ralizah I can understand that especially when there is a ton of paid DLC on top of that.
For me, it's a 5.
God what a slog this game is.
Repetitive enemies, repetitive dialog, almost no levity, it's all serious all the time with a few exceptions.
The combat is seriously dumbed down compared to other tales games and that to becomes repetitive fast.
The graphics are sweet sometimes so I'll give it that.
The story, for me, is boring as hell. During those lengthy cutscenes I could feel my attention drifting, because it all feels so meh.
Biggest letdown in gaming in the last couple of years. (again, for me)
I just platinumed it last night and I am glad it is over.
I haven't finished it yet but the game is absolutely great. Dropping their in-house engine and using unreal is the best thing the studio could do. Tales has been stale for a while from a technical standpoint. I love everything about the game so far. My only gripe is the enemy variety, but it's a minor issue.
@HUD_Wayne maybe you don't get the battle system. There is literally no need for grinding in this game. I play on normal, never died on a boss battle so far and I don't consider myself a skilled gamer.
I love the tales games (although still have to get around to Berseria). I just hope that they treat the slavery aspect with intelligence and thoughtfulness given, unfortunately, people will not allow it to be disentangled from real world events.
@Stonecold don't be put off ,the battle system is superb ,I also had doubts after playing the demo I had no idea what was going on ,but now im loving it,fast paced ,a multitude of flashy special moves that are easy to pull off ,it does take a few hours to understand the mechanics but once you do its fantastic, " ill stop your movement...and ill stop your life" brilliant.
It looked so generic. When I tried the demo, it confirmed it. I feel like I've play the same game many, many times before going back decades.
Hi there fellow gamers.
Since I haven´t finished the game I can´t give a full score, but so far
it´s definitely a 9 for me.
The story is pretty interesting, the combat is great, the world beautifull and the characters are awesome.
I have 50 hours or so and there is still a lot to do.
Story wise not sure, might be close to the end.
I think this might become my favourite Tales of game.
We´ll see once I finish.
Cheers, stay safe nakama da and happy gaming to us all
@ATaco Hi there friend.
From what I´ve played so far, I would place this game above all of the others, but that´s just me.
My other favourite Tales of games are:
Quite a few.
Didn´t play the others though, so can´t say anything about them.
They also span many different gaming platforms like PSone, Game Cube, Xbox 360, PSP, 3DS, PS3 and PC.
Cheers, stay safe and have a good one
My copy is sitting here taunting me. As soon as I beat ratchet and clank, I'm popping it in!!
