The Callisto Protocol has been out on PS5 for a couple of weeks now, and we've seen some very mixed opinions on the horror title. Expectations were high for this spiritual successor to the Dead Space series, but it does feel like it's struggled to live up to the hype.
We gave the game a respectable but slightly disappointing 7/10 in our The Callisto Protocol PS5 review. We concluded: "The Callisto Protocol is a consistently good game that, when it's at its best, gives many of the survival horror greats a run for their money. However, there's no getting around the fact the game has very little to truly call its own." Unfortunate technical issues also dragged the score down a bit.
Given the game's seemingly divisive nature, we'd love to know what review score you would give The Callisto Protocol. Have your say in our poll, and then tell us why in the comments section below.

First two hours around 8/10, after finishing the game 6/10…
Got the platinum, I would say 7 is fair. Looks great and is obviously very grizzly BUT the combat is clunky as they say and load out is extremely limited. I think you have the foundation for an incredible game here though.
Wasn't interested so didn't play it/10
Solid 8/10 for me!
@IOI completely agree. I was loving it for about 3/4 of it, but came out of it feeling completely underwhelmed for some reason. Plus I think those two headed boss fights were badly designed.
8/10 from me yep push square that is all lol
Anyone else reminded of Josh & his sister in until dawn from that thumbnail pic lol
Id have to give it a 6. Graphically looked great and the combat worked when it was one on one. However the story (particular the ending) just wasnt good. Facing more than one enemy was a pain, the deaf enemies were too easy, and the assualt rifle breaks the game XD also it commits the biggest horror game sin, its not scary
The Callisto Protocol is a solid 8/10. Unique dodging mechanics and linearity aren't cons to me. Just because it's not an open world and doesn't have a dedicated dodge button doesn't make this an automatic 6/10. I honestly wish we had more games like this. Bring back linearity you cowards!
5/10
It’s mind boggling boring. Same old thing over and over again. And the guy talking to him…enough said
I Must be getting bad but found it wayyy to hard
5/10 unfortunately. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as I thought I would. Melee combat is so frustrating and the vents… so many vents…
Couldn’t complete the game due to the terrible combat. It’s a shame because I really like the look of this game, but I was just bored playing it.
Beautiful game, some parts were excellent but awful combat and boss fights drag it down to a 6 for me.
@ShogunRock Please always add an option "I haven't played it yet", so that we can see the results without having to give a bogus grade.
@Olmaz You can press show results without voting.
@Olmaz just click view results ?
8 for me, thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was
Graphically speaking this game is in a class by itself
@SolarSpirit86 I had to put it on easy difficulty and the bigger enemies still one shot you. Crazy
@Amusei @nomither6 Absolutely right!
I am dumb. This Friday evening. I am even dumber. Or I have to check my eyes. But I'd bet on being dumb for now.
Graphically it’s ok. Performance on PS5 is fine
But it’s generic with absolutely poor and mundane combat. Which is all it has going for it, aside from the story. Which is boring at best, and poorly written at worst.
I love the combat. Any mistakes were mine and when i got the hang of it, i was toying with those mingers... On max security (not that hard)! Its graphically stunning and anybody who has seen prison break knows there is some shimmying to be done.
Strong "first" effort from the studio 8/10
Would have got 9 but i have to buy the dlc for the real ending... Not cool!
@mgene15 same switched to easy still get wrecked 😂😂
Just started it last night! Really enjoying it thus far. The atmosphere of creepy doom is thick n tasty.
@Olmaz Haha that's ok man, we've all been there ❤️
7/10 for me. I was underwhelmed by the end of it to be honest. I don't care if the game is scary to other people or not, I haven't found any game scary in the last 15 years, so that doesn't bother me, and I loved the combat. The melee combat felt very crunchy and satisfying, dodging was simple, and the levels seem like they were designed to funnel enemies in a row so you can deal with them one by one, so that was appreciated by me. Graphics of course were great.
What sucks is the utter lack of replayability at launch, they overly used bosses (three bosses in the game, and they reuse two of them.) and the horrible Resident Evil final boss. There just isn't enough compelling content in the game to completely justify that 70 dollars, but it's still a pretty good game with a good foundation.
@GuttyYZ Yup, it was probably my most disappointing experience from any game this year.
The first couple of hours I was very excited and really getting “Dead Space is back” feelings, but oh boy, just about half the main story it fell completely flat, it started to become just more and more of the same stuff and combat didn’t evolve almost at all so it kept being more frustrating each time, and I seriously can’t believe how unplayable it is when there’s more than 2 enemies on screen, it’s also beyond disappointing there were only 2 bosses in the entire game and both were underwhelming to say the least.
This has been one of those games which I finish purely out of rage, I went from “I can’t believe we’re finally getting something like Dead Space” to “get this garbage out of my sight and just give me the remake”, already sold it and impatiently waiting for the remake to heal my disappointment.
Played through the game 3 times (normal, hard, easy) and got the Platinum in a few days. I really enjoyed my time with The Callisto Protocol. I'd give it an 8/10. The 3d audio sounded amazing, and the framerate was a smooth 60fps with VRR for the most part. Most importantly (to me), I was pleasantly surprised the PS5 version has gyro support!
@Wezi did you just say Calisto protocol graphically is “ok”? Are you from the future?
I just dont understand these commenters about bad combat…
1.You have your baton, you can upgrade it so it disrupts enemy blocks in other words it go’s through the enemy block!
2. You can upgrade the baton to have power hit, it is R1
3. You can upgrade the blocking with baton
The baton is the only weapon that i personally fully upgraded
4. The GRP is second important device or maybe most important! You can instakill any enemy with it! ANY REGULAR ENEMY! There is spikes all over the game!!! ALL OVER THE GAME!!!!
5. You can make combos with your weapons!
6. THE ENEMYS! The enemys can make combos too! They can hit you with 1 blow, 2 blow or even 3 blow strikes! You cant guess in this game! You have to watch your enemy, dont guess oh now he hit me 2 blow and i dodged now i hit and all of a sudden the enemy makes third blow and you traded the hits!!!!
7. And if i go against multiple enemys, my gut says dont go there swinging, shoot 1 or throw it to the distance and kill the other.
8. The blind ones are maybe the easiest enemys, so dont go running!!!! You can stomp the blind one after you shank those uglys, others wont hear it. You can also GRP kill blinds to spikes and yes! It is silent way to kill! Throw the enemy low enough on spikes and you can go stomp the enemy on spikes and you get loot too!!!! EASY!
9. Do not just tap tap tap tap tap.
I played the game on hard and after that i started the game on easy so i can get all the collebtibles and man the game is EASY on easy, i can sell all my health and i just stomp the enemys and every now and then i get meds and im full health again.
10. LEARN THE GAME AND STOP CRYING
And yes 10/10 score
It was 9/10 but all the hate the game gets it must get 10 from me
What?!?!? 10? But the game is like dead space copy?
Yeah so what? Maybe the devs loved dead space so much! Go play fortnite chapter 4
Based off the name alone i skipped it.
@Loftimus exactly my guy!
@AstraeaV and you went to play Tiny Tinas wonderlands, and dont get me wrong the game is great. Your reason not to play is…. well i dont care
Honestly for me 6/10. Couldn't wait to finish it. Started well, but I got very tried on the gameplay and story.
Who are the absolute marshmallows giving this anything below a 5?
Cant really give a full review as only played an odd hour as been snashing musnight suns and other games but so far 8.5-9 actually prefer it over dead space with melee combatant was scary crawling by that killer robot . I'm quite a scarey cat so horror games are way out my comfort zone but thought I'd give it a go 😅
I’m honestly feeling a 7.5 on this but have it a 7. It was my most anticipated game of the year and while it was certainly very good it wasn’t great, wasn’t QUITE what I was hoping for and thus a little bit of a letdown.
A blend of the original Resident Evil on PS1 and Doom 3. While limited on variety due to the game setting the graphics are good. If you approach the combat from a traditional third person perspective (i.e GoW) you will struggle. It’s more a 5 d’s of dodgeball mechanic. The multiple death animations hint that getting killed is part of the game experience and most enemies can put the player down with minimal effort. There have been some updates to further refine the combat but you are likely to hit encounters where you will die, die and die again. The solution is usually to use some environmental element such as turbines, exploding canisters to insta kill and avoid the need to engage in melee combat.
Had a blast with it. 8/10 from me.
Definitely an 8.
Sheep mentality are ruining games
@showface You cared enough to comment. Did not play Tiny Tina and also didn't not play Control. Stupid names bother me.
CALLISTO PROTOCOL 2077
@ashtray5 what would be the playable name for this game?
tbh not played it. (a) there's no smoke without fire and the smoke says its average at best and (b) there's so many great games out there, why waste your time with average?
Will give it a whirl when on PS+ in 6 months time.
my personal game of the year! the game and developer with balls! very rare this days
@residentsteven woooooow! Gamers these days…
I was 3 trophies from platinum then gave on up the game entirely on the last boss..the doge and combat mechanics were a big let down and for a one hit death death just got too frustrating. And that's from someone that's platinumed all the soulsborne games
Solid 8/10 didnt like the dodge mechanic
i was sceptical about this game after seeing it's first clunky gameplay. also comments that people find it to much of a deadspace game with alot of the same settings over and over again.
i think it is a missed opportunity for not making a FPS or Psvr game of it, more mysterious more isolated and less music. i have the same opinnion about games such as metroid prime(need to be vr) , these games need a fresh update to make a good entry again.
calisto protocol basicly continues where dead space 3 started, as a budget game, you only buy when there is absolute nothing to play.
i don't believe it is a bad game, but more been there done that.
6/10 Looks fantastic and early levels are very atmospheric. But the combat is clunky, save points are not good, and i got to the last Boss fight and i dont really care what happens at the end and went back to finish off Ragnarok..
Only played for 2 hours so far. Enjoying it, but honestly, it all just make me want to play the Dead Space remake instead. Likely too soon to judge, but 7/10 seems like the right score.
8 out of 10 word up son
I'm loving it, not all of us want boring open world crap. Aimlessly wondering around, crafting some stupid weapon or potion. I love single player LINEAR games!! I know that's a swear word in this pathetic gaming industry nowadays. But that's my personal preference. Uncharted, Gears, Deadspace, Bayonetta, Calisto protocol, the order.
@IOI felt the same way about God of war ragnarok
@Danloaded you do know there's dlc coming summer 2023?
@Styledvinny79 yes God of war ragnarok is boring
@CVCubbington since you enjoyed the callisto protocol upcoming story dlc coming summer 2023
@Zombiechris i do but most games aren't that blatant about it. This is definitely a 'we are making you pay for the true ending'. That being said if it had just ended on the last shot of dani I still would have felt the ending sucked but wouldce been less annoyed XD
@Danloaded umm obviously cause the doc story isn't ready yet and plus the company probably waiting to see the results and reviews of the main game and to see what could they do and improve more on the dlc now
N/A I haven't even bought it yet. Waiting for a $30 sale in a year or two.
A couple of hours into it. 8/10 easily.
