Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the best looking games on the PS4, and it runs fairly flawlessly at 60fps on the PS5 in backwards compatibility. Many felt developer Nixxes was wasting its time remastering the game natively for Sony’s new-gen console, then.
The truth, however, is that it’s done an extraordinary job – as these comparisons illustrate. While this is predominantly a visual overhaul, the differences are staggering, especially when you consider just how good the original game looks.
In collaboration with original creator Guerrilla, the team at Nixxes has upgraded all the textures, completely redone the foliage, reworked the lighting, and incorporated various tech improvements from sequel Horizon Forbidden West, such as the Anubis Cloud System.
You end up with a game that’s comfortably among the best-looking on the PS5, and an obvious upgrade for the $10 fee Sony is charging to existing owners.
You can read more about our thoughts on the remaster in our Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered PS5 review, but do let us know if you’re impressed with these improvements in the comments section below.

Sorry, Dragon Age. Between $10 and $70, I know what I'm playing tomorrow...
@Loamy Need to get your eyes tested, then, I'm afraid.
@Loamy Sarcasm now detected
It’s an upgrade for sure, but i don’t know what it is with devs killing the atmosphere with remasters .
I've played this game a few times so don't have the urge to revisit but this is a great little update to the ones who haven't played yet or do get that urge to jump back in
I can certainly acknowledge that the remaster has improved the texture work and the ambient effects significantly, I feel like something is lost with the color range. The original looks so much more stark and unique in its lighting compared to the remaster (at least in the video above and what else I’ve seen) it’s just a preference thing for me which is why I’ll stick with the original
It definitely looks prettier...too bad I'm done with this game. I'm still cool with playing 8 and 16 bit graphics...so a face lift of a game that was already considered gorgeous 7 years ago feels like beating a dead horse. But I'm stoked for all the gamers out there looking forward to replaying this game
So they both look good then. No major upgrades, but a nice iterative improvement for a limited cost.
@get2sammyb Sarcasm is the hardest thing to detect on the internet don't you know?
Ten quid. Easy purchase.
With great sarcasm comes great responsibility
For the love of god why do they have to change the color of everything! I loved the original's palette.
Now everything looks like it has too much green vegetation, even the freakin snow areas.
It completely changes the atmosphere.
It’s PS5 Pro enhanced. For $10 this will probably be the first game I play on it next week! I also just found out BG3 will be enhanced. Elden Ring and FF16 need to get with the program. 😅
I'm really looking forwards to playing this again from scratch tomorrow and I've literally just purchased the 2nd outing with the burning shores expansion of the store. I guess that's me taken care of for a while then..
@GreatAuk They said they looked at the original concept art and tried to make it match more closely to that.
Looks amazing and I'm definitely upgrading. The only shot I liked more on the original was in the mountain pass with the red sky but could that partly be down to the day and night cycle maybe?
It does look fantastic but I think I’ll hold out for the ps6 remake.
I think it does look much nicer in general, but they really dropped the ball on character lighting in the cutscenes. Well, assuming that the trailer from a month ago showed more or less final lighting. But in those scenes the original looked much nicer in my opinion.
@Loamy @get2sammyb @Czar_Khastik
Made my lunch break! Lol
@wildcat_kickz Smart man.
Ahhh, I wish we could see less often news for remasters and something new. Not that there are no new things but ballance is off.
@wildcat_kickz Ha not me, don't have any intention to go back to this game no matter how good the coat of fresh paint is. Bring out new ones.
Both look great.
Looking forward to the rerecorded dialogue and cutscenes. Some of the most stilted, marionette-like movement and irritating voices I've heard in the original.
@Casco I started on the other side, but the more I've seen of Veilguard, the less interested I've become, which is a bummer for me, since I actually really enjoyed the first three games.
I'm sure I'll get to it eventually, but I'm just not feeling particularly moved to buy it at full price and at launch.
The PS5 remaster definitely looks better, but man, Sony first-party devs were squeezing the PS4 for all it was worth towards the end. No wonder mine always sounded like a jet taking off.
Looks really good, I just don't get how her face looks chubbier though. She's very lean, I find it odd that her face is that round.
@Frmknst Ok. I didn't know that. Sorry about that 🙄 Not sure how that contributes to remasters being useless though. I'm pretty sure faulty thermal paste and the existence of remasters aren't related in any way 🤷
Why no facial comparisons? Should I be worried lol
If a game was shown during the last few PlayStation Experiences PSX it doesn't deserve a remaster
I paid the £10 on Steam as the original pc release I got free with my Ryzen 3600 and the original was a disaster at launch took a year to get it fixed and play at least near 60fps but it's all over the place.
Hopefully I get to run this on decent quality on medium at least for 1080p but I'll mess about with it. At the moment I'm enjoying FF7 Remake Part 1
How many articles have to be made about this same thing? Sick of seeing yall hype up Zero Dawn on what seems like a weekly basis. Starting to think yall get a kick back from certain games, with how many repeating articles I see for certain games.
@AdamNovice "Sarcasm is the hardest thing to detect on the internet don't you know?"
Its even harder to detect on Pushsquare 😂😂
@Ken_Kaniff the repeat articles about old games is likely because PlayStation have almost given up making single player narrative driven games this gen. Push square have to write about something.
Wow that is quite the difference. They should have used comparison videos (or maybe they did and I missed it) as the selling point.
Totally worth the $10 upgrade.
I'm actually surprised how good the PS4 version still looks. I'll play this again but after I get my Pro in.
@Northern_munkey you will love it! Just coming to the end of burning shores myself. Been an awesome ride.
meh, 10 bucks for a game I already played and not even that long ago. Hard pass. How about using the time and resources into a new game? ffs sony
@Boxmonkey I guess so, it's like beating a dead horse. I'd rather see coverage on one of the hundreds of indie games that deserve the coverage instead of this unnecessary remaster.
It's more shocking how great it looked on the PS4 so long ago. But I double dipping with Horizon Zero Dawn looks gorgeous especially the water.
@wildcat_kickz For me it was the opposite. Didn't have much interest in Veilguard until recently. Hope it's a fun game to sink a few hours!
This game is going to blow the socks off of newcomers.
You'll see. YOU'LL ALL SEE!
@thefourfoldroot1
It is like playing a record. I like to play a game more than one time.
@Hypoman
Really? I’m the opposite. I feel like I’m wasting my life by denying myself the chance to experience something new by spending my finite time playing something again.
@thefourfoldroot1 exactly
im excited , i want to try it out , but i really want to wait till i get my ps5 pro before i play it again lol.
I can't wait to play, I have the game preloaded, I'm just anxious if I can use my saves for the PS4 version? I could start a new game plus if that is the case
@Markatron84 pfft, u must not have taken your console in for regularly scheduled thermal paste checkups. How lame.
@zupertramp I know, what a moron 🙄🙄
@Loamy Throw in some LOTR: Gollum references and you're golden
Man, this thing isn't bad on PS5, but on PS5 Pro it's going to be INCREDIBLE!
Playing it right now and it looks great. Hands, hair and lights are easy enhancements to spot. The original already looked amazing though, so there are lots of times where it doesn’t really feel like an improvement because of poor nostalgia memory making us remember things differently than they were.
That said, performance mode is SO much better than resolution mode that perhaps the problem is that most improvements were on resolution mode.
On the downside, character animations still feel a bit uncanny, moving their heads all the time while talking (missed opportunity, maybe they’ll fix this on Horizon Remaster Remaster on PS6).
There are both improvements on the ps5 and items that look better on the ps4. The main improvements that I see on the ps5 are minor objects in the background and slightly more detail in the sand. I personally find I can see more detail in her hair on the ps4 over the ps5. The ruined bridge has more details on the ps4 over the ps5. Sure there is more details on the path on the ps5 over the ps4, but I find that the ps5 looks generic were as the original ps4 has a distinct aesthetic and feel.
