Topic: Does John Seed ever actually crash?

So I'm enjoying Far Cry 5 but I absolutely loathe anything related to vehicles. I would probably enjoy a lot of GTA if it wasn't central to the game.
My problem is that I'm trying to kill John Seed and experiencing a bug which I think is related to the fact that I parachuted out of the aircraft because I am totally useless in that plane. The wiki has this to say, "If flying a plane is not your strong suit, simply carry on doing other things in Holland Valley and eventually John will crash his plane and you can pick up the quest at that point."
My question is when? I cannot get Nick to join me as I haven't done his quest yet and I've spent ages doing other quests in Holland Valley to the point that there's not much left. Does he ever crash or do I have to somehow find another way to shoot him down? I hear that Hurk eventually shows up (and is capable of shooting him down or something) but I like the idea of doing one region at a time and it looks like he crops up somewhere else.
The bug in question seems to be the fact that it keeps going back to playing the music from the mission no matter what I do (really annoying) and, whenever I fast travel, I end up at the same rather random location near a busted silo and reasonably close to where the mission takes place. My guess is that the game is trying to force me back into the plane. Does this mean that the wiki is BS?

Thanks AgentCooper. It was a pain in the ass but I eventually killed him. I can't say how though. I agree: the planes are atrocious!
