Topic: How does Playstation define Online?

Hi all, I am curious what your take is on the definition of "Online". For minecraft the playstation store states "Playstation Plus required for online play" so while I never would have bought both two more copies of the game and Plus subscriptions for the kids to play I was willing to buy the game twice more and let them play with each other on our 2 PS4 units on the local network. So... do they define "Online" as both WAN and LAN just because they want to? I ask as after having bought both of them a copy under their logins when they go to play with one another it just brings them to the splash screen for buying PS Plus accounts! So agrivated!

@Plexus I'm not sure how many PS4 games support LAN/WAN play to be honest. I did have a quick Google because your query made me curious and there are a few games but Minecraft doesn't seem to be one of them.

I believe LAN/WAN would be a separate mode to online so the specific game needs to support it. Maybe somebody else with more experience will be able to clue you in a bit better.

Might be worth checking out the offline multiplayer menu though to see if there is anything in there pertaining to LAN

@ralphdibny Hi there. as far as i am aware online would refer to receiveing or sending data out over the WAN (Wide Area Network) to the "Web". For instance if your service provided has cut off your WAN access because you did not pay you would ask them something like "how long after i pay can i get back "online"". So if your "online" conectivity is down you can still access your LAN (Local Area Network) to view files etc. So to me when they say i need PSPlus for online play it means accessing their servers for a paid for service, Sony does not manage my home network so why the heck would i need PSPlus to play in my home where i can disconnect my "online" service provider and still play... or should bloody be able to. I know, i am just really a bit mad about this whole thing. If you cant play multiplayer in your own home they should say so before buyting the game.

...Your children could play together on the same console @Plexus using the multiplayer splitscreen that I'm sure minecraft has?

It won't be online of course but it's better then nothing...

@Plexus ah apologies, I got WAN confused, I thought it stood for wireless area network rather than wide.

It's just a case by case basis on whether the game supports LAN, like I said, I don't think a lot of PS4 games support LAN, they only have online features coded into them.

Some of them have local (same console) multiplayer but it's still not as many as those that support online multiplayer but definitely more than those that support LAN.

See ya!
