Hmm, looking at what to buy before the PS3 store closes...
Currently in my basket (total £117.41):
Darkstalkers Resurrection PSN Plus Special Offer Bundle (not sure if I can buy this)
The Ratchet and Clank Trilogy
Ratchet: Gladiator
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time
Ratchet and Clank: All4One
Ratchet and Clank: QForce
Ratchet and Clank: Nexus (I believe this unlocks a free download of Quest for Booty?)
The Jack and Daxter Trilogy (I assume these are the HD Remastered ports whereas the PS4 versions are just the PS2 versions running through an emulator - making the PS3 version the one to buy?)
Can anyone confirm that info RE: the Jak and Daxter Trilogy? There's probably not much point waiting until last minute in case there is a sale on any of this is there? Are there any other obvious games I've missed off this list? Also one of the Ratchet games has DLC, that worth it or not really?
Here is what I've bought already, just naturally over the years of owning a PS3:
Sly Trilogy HD
All the God of War games except 3 as it's on PS4
ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD
Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection
The Unfinished Swan
Infamous Festival of Blood
Sonic CD
Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix
Far Cry Blood Dragon
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD
GTA IV (+DLC)
Sonic The Fighters
X Men Arcade
So that probably gives you an idea of my tastes. I am really sorry for even asking for recommendations really, I always find it really difficult to answer those sorts of questions because everyone's tastes are different!
Ps Plus games I might buy when my sub lapses because they are not on Xbox or aren't BC on Xbox one:
Anna Extended Edition
Zone of the Ender's HD Collection
Tokyo Jungle (not sure about this one, I didn't really get on with it when I played it before but it seemed unique so I should really give it another crack)
Papers Please (Vita game, looks unique but I'll probably play it before my sub lapses so I'll see)
I've got a few PS1 classics on there like Rayman 1+2, all the tomb raider, A Bugs Life and Hercules but to be honest I am trying to avoid buying any more because they are easy to pirate (I know it's naughty) and I'm already spending more than I can afford to buy what games I can before the store closes.
What do people reckon? What games are you going to buy off the store before it closes?
My apologies for posting in this thread, it's not exactly the correct topic but I weren't sure if it was worth making another thread for it...
@ralphdibny Sonic Adventure 2 is still only PS3 so that’s a good shout along with Jet Set Radio. I can’t remember if Simpsons Arcade was removed or not but that’s brilliant. Have fun with Ratchet Gladiator by the way, that’s the only one I’ve played other than PS4 but I loved it back in the day!
@nessisonett cheers 👍 I actually have sonic adventure 2 on Dreamcast, GameCube and Xbox One (BC) now 😂. I know I am a total heathen lol
I'll have a look for Simpsons arcade and Jet set radio / see if they are BC on Xbox one.
I've never actually played a ratchet and clank game, must be weird that I want to buy them all but I don't want to miss out on them ten years down the line when I finally get around to playing them!
I'm just running through and opening all my software now to make sure it's all fully updated because of that article about the patches being removed!
@ralphdibny You’re kosher if you’ve got an Xbox One to be honest, most of the third party games will run better on that. Plus you’ve got access to Skate 3 running at a decent framerate which I will be forever jealous of 😂
@nessisonett haha cheers, yeah I guess it is kinda the ps exclusives I'm looking for. There are definitely some multiplats that are generation exclusive knocking about too due to lack of BC on Xbox. DPad heavy games would be better on PS too because the Dualshock has a better d pad than the Xbox one
I really need to give skate 3 a go as it's on game pass. I played a demo of the first one back on 360 (sadly it's broken now) but didn't groove with the right stick tricks because I was so used to Tony Hawk controls.
Weirdly, I just booted up Tony hawk HD and James Hetfield from metallica is a character in it lol
@ralphdibny Ooh, I thought of a PS3 game that you should grab, Castlevania Harmony of Despair. Strange game but unique and definitely worth saving from the Great Purge.
@nessisonett cheers, I literally just bought that on the Xbox the other day because I was padding out an order to reach £35 to complete a Rewards Punch card. Never played a castlevania game before (or at least got into one properly) but now I have most of them across Switch and Xbox! I read that's a weird one though, best played in multiplayer aparrently
Have you bought anything/plan to buy anything before the shutdown?
@nessisonett there was one Wii game I wish I bought (get ready, it's totally random) which was WarioWare DIY Showcase 😅. It's the only wario ware game I either can't own officially or won't be able to own (I don't have DIY DS but that's available secondhand and I don't have Twisted on GBA but that never came out in the UK).
But yeah that FOMO has spurred me into action for PS3. Even if it impoverises me. But yeah, there doesn't seem to be a huge amount thats digital only on the store, I'm only going for R&C and J&D because second hand physical copies are damn expensive (except for a couple r and c games).
Vita is another one that's easily piratable (I still know it's naughty) but only my PS TV is hacked so I'd be keen to buy any games for my fully updated legit handheld Vita that are sort of touchscreen heavy that don't work as well on DS4. Uncharted Golden Abyss is probably about the line for games I'd play on the TV because it's just swipes that can be done on the DS4 touchpad. I don't think (could be wrong) that PS3 emulation is up to snuff yet and/or requires a wicked high tech PC to do (which I don't have) so definitely more keen to buy PS3 games atm.
Just remembered that Motorstorm RC game, I think that's a PS3 digital exclusive 🤔
@ralphdibny If you have a relatively OK PC then Retroarch is honestly better for PS1 games than the PS3/Vita. Plus the achievements have made me buy or borrow from my uncles a lot of games that I’ve been meaning to play for years like Medal of Honor!
@nessisonett I use that on my raspberry pi actually. Well I don't use it often but it's good to know there's half a terabyte of PS1 games knocking about with completely customisable controls ready to go. There's a few games that just refuse to boot but oh well, I'm sure I'll work out how to fix them when my desire to play them outweighs my laziness to fix them
After finishing Disco Elysium I am now back to PS3 gaming! Continuing Time and Eternity with Grand Theft Auto V on the side. I’m probably going to buy a few of the PSone JRPG’s from the PlayStation Store before it closes. Maybe Persona 3 and 4 too.
I updated all the digital PS3 games last night and have been going through the discs for the last few hours, still have about 12 more games to do -_- so tedious!
Found another game that's probably worth getting digital which is Killzone HD.
I added a bunch of physical games to a CEX basket only to find they charge £1.95 per item for postage 😨. Ive got a £64 voucher but I don't want to spend half of it on postage. This is a bit of a mixed bag because I'll have to go to a shop which I don't want to do during the pandemic, on the other hand I can choose games that are in good condition with the manual included in store. Some games are not available locally either. Could do a mix n match, visit the local stores for a few games then order the remaining off the website. Still though, that postage stings!
I tested out buying games with a £50 gift card which cost £43.85 from shopto.net (seems to be the best deal at 12% off). It worked really well anyway.
First games I bought were Killzone, Ratchet and Clank Trilogy and... Darkstalkers Resurrection! I think buying the PSN Plus Special Offer bundle that comes with puzzle fighter HD worked as a workaround because I already had it claimed from Plus. Seems to be cheaper to buy it as a bundle than by itself anyway!
@LieutenantFatman thought I'd tag you about my Darkstalkers news, just for your info I guess if you wanted to "own" Darkstalkers or something
I’m really enjoying playing through Grand Theft Auto V. It’s still one of the most well made games I’ve played. Everything about it (Except the occasionally clunky controls) draws you into the world. I could happily just sit in my car listening to the radio or browse the in game internet. Makes me excited for Grand Theft Auto VI.
So I've been meaning to boot up the PS3 all week and insert my backlog incase the update patches are gonna stop. Glad I did too, didn't realise that the MGS4 patch adds the trophies... phew. Also, I'd heard that the update for Dantes Inferno was no longer working but mine updated fine.
Spent my second £50 top up on Sly 4, Jak Trilogy, R&C QForce, and R&C Nexus which comes with Quest for Booty. 4 more ratchet games to go and a pair of motorstorm games and that should be it for me I think.
@colonelkilgore I heard the same about marvel ultimate alliance 2 but mine updated fine. Took me hours to put all the discs in and do patches -_- Is there anything you plan to pick up in the store before it closes? I'm getting para that I'm going to miss something obvious but this is getting a bit too expensive for me now
@ralphdibny not really mate, apart from the dlc for Azura’s Wrath (as the dlc is essentially the closing act of the games narrative as far as I know). Apart from that I just wanna get all my PS3 backlog done.
PS3 games I’ve got left to play are MGS, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4, MGS Rising, God of War: GoS, God of War 2, God of War: Ascension, Infamous, Dante’s Inferno, Spec Ops: The Line, Red Dead Redemption, Dead Space, Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 (I’ve started 3 but making slow progress).
Edit, I’m off next week, so I’m hoping to get 3 of those done at least. I’m aiming to quickly plat God of War: GoS, God of War 2, MGS3 and also play MGS in prep for MGS2 which will be my next major time sink.
@colonelkilgore ahh cool fair enough. I think your plan for playing god of war games sporadically was much better than mine. I was hugely burned out by the time I finished Ascension (which was the last one in the order I played them)
I think I've got most of the ones you've mentioned or they're available on Xbox one. Actually going to use my CEX voucher to buy MGs hd trilogy again on Xbox 😂, I can't get enough of it and want to try it with the ext4a power of the One X! Probably going to get the zone of the Ender's collection over there too
@ralphdibny I try not to plough the a game series one after the other, although I did play Peace Walker fairly soon after MGSV and I just started AC Unity quite soon after AC Black Flag. As a result I was definitely burned out on MGS for a few months and I’m gonna give AC a wide berth for a good while too.
Do you (or anyone else) think that Sony will ever disable PS3 trophies?
