I was talking to an old friend of mine that was came to the country for the holidays and we were talking about how everything have changed while playing some good ol' PS3, and we started to remember how we thought how it was going to be at this point when we talked about it the last time he came. We then realized that all our predictions of the future of gaming were overall wrong.

Here's in what we were wrong:

1. Power to the Players
tumblr_lainqcSH231qclke2.jpg
NONSENSE AWAITS
We thought that we will finaly have more influence in the games that at this points we were going to be able to create our use mods on consoles or at least we were able to create our own modes or stages, features commonly seen in games like Littlebigplanet or Minecraft.

2. Flexibility
tumblr_l1vqjemVnb1qby5oe.jpg
DAMN WHY ARE WE AIMING DOWN SIGHTS WITH L3?!?!?!
At this point we have seen a lot of nonsense related to the control layout or even the placement of the HUD. What first comes to mind of this situation is Deus Ex: Human Revolution even thought it is a great game it had the worst control layout I have ever seen and the worst part is that they can't even be changed, nowadays layout customization should be a standard instead of a feature and a good game shouldn't feel unplayable because of this.

3. Variety

"I can't wait for FPS #39"
The marvelous future of gaming had such a high potential with all the innovative ideas that could've been implemented in games but instead of games like Tearaway getting released. We are seeing the same shooter  again and again and again with just another coat of paints and a different name and the worst part is that are selling like crazy, that might explain why publishers are still making them, still is a shame that a game like Tearaway has only sold less that 50k copies at this point.

4. Such big expansions will be more common
DLC.+I+m+tired+of+paying+money+for+content+that+should_f51cdf_4074351.png
We've never been so wrong in our lives.

Well we completly failed this one, we thought DLC were going to completly revamp the game with new mechanics, story elements and more gameplay when we both played Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare on my friend's house on his 360, we were completly blown away by such expansion at the time and the potential of seeing DLC in games like Final Fantasy, Mario Kart or Ratchet and Clank. Games right now are being cutted in content just to release the rest as DLC or used as a lame excuse to charge someone for a new weapon camo or skin.

Now I will briefly mention in what we were right:

1. Graphics
Killzone-Shadow-Fall-5.jpg
ITS SO PRETTY O-O

2.Be able to play with your console/PC in more than one TV

Dynamic Duo
Even thought it requires another device like Vita TV or another device to stream it to another TV it stills counts.

Back in the days my friends and I were really excited of what the future would bring us but right now after finaly remember the potential and what could've been, its just a shame to see its current path even thought its just too familiar with the good old last gen.

Great post @Epic.  It is always fun to talk to friends about how you saw the future compared to what actually happened.  What you say about DLC is really true.  What happends is the game director presents the finished product to the publisher and then the first thing they ask is "what can be removed which players will not notice?"  Thus DLC is born!

Yes, great post, @Epic, and a good read! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Well done my friend. Love the illustrations

@ZeD I know devs don't even bother on delivering a complete game anymore just look at all those franchises with an anual release they all suffer from this but they still don't care delivering half game just because they can charge you for the missing content , it just makes me sick and whats even worse is when they just release the sequel with EXTREMELY SMALL TWEAKS that could be released as DLC of the original.

@Reverend_Skeeve Good to hear it wasn't just another of my annoying posts

@JaxonH I'm glad you liked them, I usually use these kind of images on college presentations and they've never failed me xD

That was an entertaining and well made post, thanks for sharing it Epic!

It's always fun to sit and reminisce with friends about how you thought things would turn out. Unfortunately, gaming has never been a totally predictable hobby...

Man I totally agree with you on the DLC part.  Although I have always seen it as a lazy way for developers to release half a game then just to give you the rest as DLC, which is one reason I dont buy DLC.

I see this especially in fighting games, Like Injustice, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter IV.  There is absolutely no reason that they can't have those "extra characters" in the launch game.  On games like these I just wait for a GOTY edition to come out and pay the 60 bucks for that.

But there is a reason. A perfectly good one. To balance characters in these games takes an insane amount of money and time. This game up when the skullgirls devs asked for 125000 dollars for a character on indiegogo. Just one. And they even did a breakdown on why it would cost so much. http://kotaku.com/5986592/it-will-blow- … hting-game

And capcom came out and said this was really well laid out and that a street fighter charcter costs 3 million to make all inclusive. Nad it take a lot of time to design, balance and QA test. And back to the skull girls people, the article claims they were paying 8 people for 10 weeks with 48000. That's six thousand each ending with 600 a week. Or 31200 a year. I bet capcom/mortal kombat dev has a lot more staff then this and needs to make more characters. Not to mention Their staff will want a lot more than 31200 a year.

Buisness' need to make money. And it makes a lot of sense to include dlc in fighting games. Research things like this before saying there is no reason for the dlc.

Funny I seem to recall fighting games doing just fine during the 16 bit era and such long before DLC was even considered.  I am sure that companies would do just fine without DLC

Some of it like the little extras is nice like costumes or little in game perks like that is great, but when it comes to stuff that should be released like other fighters in fighting games well or stuff that should have been in the game at launch, I can't help but feel that is nothing but greed and or laziness.
