Its no secret that the supplied chat cable (its hardly a headset) isn't that great and certainly needs upgrading - particularly if you want to play MP games. With that in mind, I am looking to get a new headset and I want it to be wireless - although if I need to plug it in to the controller (like the Xbox headsets) then so be it but I don't want wires across the floor from my console to the headset.

I don't want to spend the price of a console (so the Astro A50's are not an option) and ideally I don't want to spend over £100. The headset I am considering most at the moment is the Kral Afterglow wireless headset as I can purchase it for a little bit more than the cost of a new game. However I really do not know anything about them, sound/mic quality etc and whether or not you get surround game sound (even if its virtual).

I am interested to know which headsets others have and would recommend.

(sorry if this has been covered before in the forums - I looked back over a year and couldn't find a thread on it)

@BAMozzy: I have the Sony Wireless Headset 2.0 (or Gold in the US) and think it's brilliant. The sound quality is great for the price, and for what you're paying you get really good 7.0 Virtual Surround Sound, which works with Netflix etc as well as games. You can set up 2 choices of settings for you to switch between on the fly, which is cool as a few of the bigger games out there have their own specific pre-sets available via a companion app on the PS4.

I paid around £70 and have never regretted it, I think it's an absolutely great bit of kit. Some people complain that the bass isn't quite punchy enough, but with VSS enabled I've personally never noticed any problems with it. Also, it has a really nice PlayStation themed design which compliments the PS4 well, and they fold away with a little carry pouch provided to make them easily transportable

I've heard good things about the Sony Wireless Headset too. My brother plays online quite a lot and he uses a Turtle Beach headset, forget which model exactly. They do a wide range of headsets at various prices. Search Turtle Beach on Amazon.

I have no idea where my little chat cable thing is, I could do with a headset too!

@Splat: NICE. Didn't even know that was happening! Oh well, I've only got a regular PS4 so the one I have matches it better than one of those would. Still, good shout, you definitely won't be disappointed

I really don't like the way they look - they look so cheap and tacky - not like the Pulse headset they did. That being said, I have no intention of wearing my headset for anything other than gaming. I have read a lot of reviews and all said the sound isn't that great - lack punch and bass especially compared to other headsets. The mic quality isn't as good either as Turtle Beach headsets for example which has been the main reason I haven't bought this one. The build quality and the amount of people that have said theirs broke after a few months also concerns me.

Its difficult being disabled to actually get out and try them for myself so I can't really comment on the sound/mic quality and how it compares to things like the Turtle Beach PX4 or Stealth 400/500p. I am used to Turtle Beach as I have the XO7's for my xbox one and had the Earforce Deltas on my XB360/PS3.

I know reviews can be misleading - hence I asked here to see what people here think and use.

I have the Turtle Beach deltas (MW3 branded) - basically the top of the range TB's at the time for the 360 and PS3 and they could be utilised for my PS4 too as they have bluetooth - I could have used them for my XB1 as well but went for the XO7's instead as they came with the adapter.

I am seriously considering the TB's PX4, Stealth 400p and 500p maybe even the Pulse too but I really don't like the look of the 'golds' even if they have 7.1 surround sound too. I want to get a set by November at the latest as thats when I will be getting more MP and co-op PS4 games and these are so much better if you can hear and communicate with others...

I was considering the 'afterglows' as they seemed to be 'OK' for £50 but now I am not so sure as they seem somewhat basic - only stereo and do have a few mixed reviews. The Astro A50's and TB Stealth 800's are little bit too expensive...

I've spent countless hours and many many amazon orders to test and find my perfect headset. I can give you detailled information and a recommendation to boot:

PS4 Gold Wireless Headset:
Easy to handle, easy to setup, decent sound and very comfortable. There is one minor and one big drawback. The minor one is that the bass is seriously lacking. Which - if the rest of the spectrum of audio is fine and all is no big deal, I prefer natural sound over big bad thumping bass personally. But the biggest gripe which disqualified this headset for me is the crap microphone. It sounds really "far away" and "tinny" on the other end. Nogo for me.

Tritton Kama
This would be my choice for best value for money. It usually sells under € 30,00 and just needs to be connected to the controller port. They're reasonable comfortable, deliver nice sound with good bass (even though a bit on the dull side, highs get a bit swallowed) and the mic quality is perfect. They don't drain the controller too much either. They would be my budget recommendation.

Stealth Headsets from Turtlebeach
There are several iterations of those, basicly the difference is if they are stereo or surround. Anyways, those got disqualified by me because they are just a mess to set up. Not that it's hard but I hate a cable salad and that's what they are. I like it simple and functional. The sound is way above average but you get interference here and there if you're in a room full of electronics. The painful setup looks like this: USB dongle in the front, connected to the optical out in the back. I don't like that. Also the Headset itself needs to be charged via USB or a base-station in the more expensive variations. The comfort and sound isolation is just around average, for the price and things on offer, a NO from me.

Turtlebeach P12
Those would be my all-around winners. Because they are reasonable priced around € 60,00 and really easy to setup. They come with an in-cable-usb-amp so that you can hook them up to the USB port of your PS4 and that's all you gotta do. You can seperately boost BASS and volume on the controls on that amp and you got like 2 metres of cable. If you're not too far away from your PS4 those are the way to go. They are reasonably comfortable and really light, you don't sweat much under them and the sound is excellent. you can make the bass as prominent as you want and really crank it up, still they are separated in sound-stage well enough and games with awesome soundtracks like Destiny for example really shine. Also the mic is really flexible and on the receiving end has the best result of all the headsets I tested! RECOMMENDED

STEELSERIES Siberia V3 Chroma
That's the one I got (I also kept the P12) and love. They work via USB cable, have changable light effects and can be configured on any Mac or PC, but now to the important part. The sound is just incredible. They have the widest sound-stage of all I tested and technically the broadest frequency they can play, which results in awesome "room filling" sound and perfect stereo (no they are not surround). I got mine for € 129,- and they're well well worth it! The comfort is THE BEST I've ever experienced, sound isolation is decent, the only downside: you sweat under them on a warm day, but besides that, you won't even feel them. The Mic is extractable and of average quality on the receiving end, it's a bit like "helicopter pilot" on the other end, but still perfectly understandable just not as clear as the other options on this list. And again, the sound is awesome. Friggin' awesome. If you're an audiophile and look for something great for a reasonable price, don't look further.

IN-EAR option:
Some people, as me, enjoy in-ear headphones for their music-listening because the sound is more direct and the bass more intense, there is also natural sound isolation. So I thought "why not use them as gaming headsets" - they're even good for "on the road". I tried all available ones and here's my short rundown: Turtlebeach sells legacy in-ears which are of great build quality and offer good sound, the in-cable-mic/controls also work great, they don't reach the Siberia neither in sound quality nor in comfort and are quite expensive at around € 60,00. Steelseries also offer discontinued in-ears which are rather uncomfortable and also really expensive, they're similar to the Turtlebeach's. Also there is RAZER which are uncomfortable, bass-heavy and overpriced as it is standard with Razer products. The build quality is nice, but the cables are sub-par. Mic is also only average. There are the ones by Sharkoon which are also "SOSO" and those other brand I forgot the name. They are pale-blue with black. Good comfort, average sound. All in all you could say if you want in-ears for your gaming needs for whatever reason (portability, isolation, cross-compatibility with Vita, ...) I strongly recommend getting the official VITA in-ears by Sony. They run as low as € 10,- and the build quality of the speakers themselves is rather good, only the cable is quite flimsy, they offer "good" sound and "good" mic quality to boot, especially for that price they are a good "backup" solution as well. Just don't expect "BOSE" or "SENNHEISER" kind of quality from any of those in-ears.

Hope that helped you a bit.
If you have further questions, just ask, I literally spent HUNDREDS of hours to finding my best headset for gaming!

well I opted for the Turtle Beach Stealth 800p headset in the end. I was tempted by the 500p but according to a lot of reviews, they aren't that great and the 400p is stereo only. I know I didn't really want to spend £200 on a headset but a lot of reviews said these were excellent, versatile and probably as good (if not better because of the versatility) than the Astro A50's. They are completely wireless too - don't need a cable to the controller like the PX4's. They look a lot better than the Sony Gold's and like I said, I have the XO7's for the XB1 and Earforce Deltas for the PS3/XB360 so have experience of Turtle Beach headsets and never had an issue with 'sound' quality or comfort for prolonged gaming.
The connectivity is very simple, just a base unit (connected via a USB) and a optical cable. Its rechargeable by placing on the base unit and lasts for 15hrs - that's a lot longer than a DS4 controller! It has a lot of sound modes (as well as modes to make footsteps sound louder) too and I hear good bass. I know the Mic and sound is good as a friend has the XB1 version and he thinks its better than the A50's and many other headsets and uses it for more than just gaming.
I only ordered today - before I saw the post by @Scollurio and therefore haven't received them yet. I will let you know what I think when I have used them for a while.

Edit: My Headset arrived this morning and was very simple to connect. An optical and USB cable between the console and Base unit - simple! In terms of having that USB cable stuck out the front of the Console, I think that is more of a design issue and a bit of short sightedness from Sony. There is ample space at the back or even the sides to add an extra USB. The cables I have though are long enough to reach where I intended to place the base unit and as my PS4 isn't on 'display', I don't see the USB sticking out of the front and the cable trailing to the Base unit anyway. I never use my PS4 USB's - even to charge my DS4's - I use my Laptop for that...

@seanobi: Yeah I've heard a loooooooot of people say the same about Pulses - great sound but terrible for breaking. I think it's something to do with the way they vibrate making them more prone to cracking.

My headset arrived and after a very quick connection - just needed to plug in the optical and USB cables into the console and base and change a few Audio settings on the console, I gave them a good few hours testing - I haven't tested the Mic yet though and it features a similar in-built Mic to the Golds but as long as others can hear me, I don't really care about it too much - Its not being used for podcasts, broadcasting etc...

In terms of comfort, they fit my head perfectly and I played for over 6 hours on just the charge they arrived with without feeling they were heavy, pinching my head or any discomfort at all. The sound quality is incredible. I tried the various 'Game' presets (of which there are 6 - there are 4 main modes - Game, Movie, Music and Surround Off with 4 presets for each apart from Game which has 6)All of which felt they had a good range from the high trebles down to the low basses - the bass is quite heavy on some modes but I like that anyway. I have the XO7's for my XB1 - a good quality £130 headset but the sound quality of this is a LOT better. I know its a lot of money for just a Headset (I paid £200) but it also comes with 2yrs guarantee (if you register with TB and become an Elite member -free) as part of that membership you get to choose 2 from 10 custom ear covers and either a t-shirt or a long-sleeve hooded t-shirt for free too.

Its still early days but I must admit my initial impression is that this really is a premium quality headset with awesome sound. My only gripe is that my game sound no longer comes through the TV too. I guess thats because of the settings - switching the primary audio out to 'Optical' and maybe the Dolby setting too but I had hoped that the TV would still have game audio as I don't always want to play with my headset on. I guess I could keep swapping the settings over. I have read that it maybe because I turned on my PS4 first and then the TV. I hope that Sony's next update though allows the game sounds to play through both easily - a setting to play through HDMi, Optical or both...

As my investigation of Headsets for the PS4 continues I might have found THE BEST (for my needs) Headset. It's upcoming from Turtle Beach and out due end of September. The PX24. You ONLY connect it via 3,5 mm jack to your DS4 (or any other 3,5 mm socket since its cross-platform for almost everything) AND it has inline controls, AND has (if you want it) virtual surround, even on your PS4, you can boost bass, game audio, voice, mic independently AND you can switch on "superhuman hearing" which in itself is kinda audio cheat enabling you to hear footsteps and weapon reloads and thelilke far before you see your enemy.

The Design looks decent enough and if the sound is on-par or better with my P12 - which I suspect - this is a real "do it all, no hassle" solution to my PS4 Headset needs! Thought I should mention it, it's priced just below 100 bucks which makes it a really good deal in my book!
