This video may answer a question about fan noise and heat...

Note that they had it on an open table in a room that was presumably also not too hot. If you put this in a TV unit with a closed door and little airspace next to the unit, it will be a different story.... like any other AV equipment.

@Mega-Gazz: Of course - but then that's to be expected if you limit the air circulation! Good job mine will be going in a an open fronted AV unit with plenty of space around it for air flow/cooling

It still seemed quiet though at that point and not like my PS4....

@nono89: In essence, the Pro is essentially a PS4 with 2 PS4 GPU's in parallel, an extra 1GB of DDR5 RAM and an extra USB port too. Yes the CPU, GPU and RAM have increased clockspeed/bandwidth and the GPU may have added built in features but essentially its components are not much different.

Sony could have opted for a newer CPU, more GDDR5, added in a 4k HDR Bluray etc but opted to keep much of the same core architecture and functionality to keep costs down as well as to ensure complete compatibility with the existing PS4 library.

On a side note, I am disappointed to see that when running non-patched games, the PS4 Pro not only switches off half the GPU but also limits it to the same operating parameters of the PS4. I had hoped that we would see some benefits to non-patched games because of the CPU and GPU's faster clock speed (even if just half is working) as well as the slightly higher memory bandwidth. This should have allowed a lot of the unlocked frame rates and dynamic scaling games to perform better - after all the drops in either area are caused by bottlenecking (where the components can not process the data quick enough). The extra bandwidth memory would have helped too - especially with texture pop-in etc.

I understand Sony wanting to keep compatibility etc but I think making it run exactly like a PS4 with non-patched games is going to far. As MS proved with the XB1s - a slight boost in speed has no adverse effect on games. the extra speed would only benefit games with unlocked frame rates and/or dynamic scaling with no need for developers to patch in support for Pro. Maybe it would show up the PS4 for being too under clocked for modern gaming.

Similar to the backwards compatibility between generations argument, I think this feels like a bigger deal than it is. Games have a fairly short shelf-life generally, and going forward basically every game will take advantage of the extra power. So in a couple months time improved performance of old games just won't be an issue anymore. Yes, some people will play older games but given the numbers and the average shelf-life of games, taking the compatibility route makes sense.

@Mega-Gazz: I agree, I'm a bit disappointed because I'd have liked to have tried some of my old games to see how they perform on the new Pro but if I'm being honest this would have only been as a curiosity and I'm unlikely to replay all those old games on the new hardware just to enjoy the faster frame rates. It's the future software that will matter really.

@Mega-Gazz: @kyleforrester87: Of course shelf life is short lived but we know games like the Witcher 3 struggled in certain areas and that's still relevant. Other games may well come to IGC and benefit too. Doom may or may not get patched bit again could benefit too as could Dark Souls 3. Games aren't all 3years old and/or 'finished' because the Pro is out now...

Mine is preparing for dispatch from Amazon now

I sold my PS4 to my sister last weekend and have been without a PlayStation all week.

@Thesnipergecko: Mine was dispatched yesterday and supposedly 'out for delivery' today according to an email I had an hour ago...

Disappointed the Drive I had intended to replace the 1TB supplied HDD wasn't delivered to the store and now not expected until 11th!

@BAMozzy: I've been tracking mine all day- it's currently somewhere near Birmingham, which is about 150 miles away. Damn the email saying it was being dispatched today, I'd got my hopes up- especially as I'm working from home!

@BAMozzy: fingers crossed it arrives today for you! There's no rush for mine. I know I have at least a 9 hour wait to restore my backup. Unless it takes longer to restore than it did to backup!

@Mergatro1d: Mine arrived in Bristol yesterday (or more accurately at 4am this morning) which is around 25miles away from me. I got an email telling me it was 'out for delivery' and when I checked the tracking, it said this was at 11.40. 4hrs15mins later, its still not arrived.

@Thesnipergecko: I am not too bothered if it arrives today or tomorrow. I had hoped that my replacement and larger internal HDD would be here before my PS4 Pro so I can swap it and then spend the next 10hrs (or however long it takes) transferring the completely full PS4 HDD over to it. After that, I want to install my new games (Titanfall 2 and CoD:IW/MW:r) as well as reinstall some (if not all) the games I have been forced to delete because of storage space issues on my PS4. Some of these (Last of Us, Infamous:2nd Son) are games I really want to play on my Pro as they have been updated. I may end up setting it up anyway just to play 1 or 2 games. I know that these will not be transferable but I could put the 1TB from the Pro into my PS4 after I swap it out. Still not decided what to do with my PS4 - It may end up in the bedroom along with my OG XB1, PS3, XB360 and SkyQ mini box... 1st world concerns

im holding myself so much to dont pick the ps4 pro today! im waiting for a bundle with at least 1 big game , or a version with SSD because it is supported.. maybe watch dogs 2 bundle next weeks?

ranjas

BAMozzy

@ranjas: Chances are we won't see any 'Official' bundles this side of Christmas. I am sure they would have been announced by now. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if we had a 'best of' PS bundle with Last of Us, Uncharted 4, Ratchet and Clank or Infamous bundle as all of those are owned by Sony and enhanced too. It seems some places are selling out of non-bundled consoles so I can't see Sony making a bundle and getting it out around the world in time for Christmas if they can't keep up stock of it now

Preordered on the 7th September with Amazon, had several calls with them today as there's no tracking info on their site for my order. They say I didn't "order soon enough" to get allocated a unit. I have been charged for it but will not get a unit now until the 18th November. My mate ordered last week and received his this morning.

Anyway, lots of shouting later, they've cancelled my order, refunding me in 7-10 working days, give me £5 to say sorry and +1 month to my Prime subscription...

Wen't to Currys at lunch time and picked one up.

Mine is sitting in my room unopened... I get to go to work all day before I get to do anything with it.

As much as I want one, at this point I can't justify getting it when my PS4 is working just fine. It also doesn't help that with the Switch and Scorpio coming out next year any money I would use for the Pro I can put towards those two things. Besides I dont own a 4K, don't see me getting one anytime soon so it wouldn't make that much of a difference. The only reason I would buy it is for a bigger HDD but I am sure I will be able to find a slim or regular PS4 with a bigger HDD on sale here for alot cheaper then a Pro at some point the next few weeks.

Doing the transfer on mine now I don't expect to benefit from it much till I get a 4K telly but the improvements to games like FF15 on a 1080 set are just what I wanted for now. On top of that I get a bigger hard drive and another controller plus the trade in value of my old PS4 so..yeah, happy days!
