Game thread for the upcoming 4th episode of the best beat em up series ever.

Chat, team up or found a hidden 1up or chicken? Easter eggs, throw backs and tough enemy combos?

@themcnoisy the game looks awesome, unfortunately I've bought the limited run physical version so it'll be some months before I can play it!

Probably give me time to play through the first 3 again.

Eh, £20 for it seems a bit steep for me. Was a huge fan of 1 and 2 as a kid.

This will likely be sale material in a fairly short time once the hype has passed, and will be able to pick it up for a fiver. Will likely wait till then.

It has a plus discount it costs 22.49 Euros on PSN.

However, both PC and Xbox versions are on Game pass in EU.

@Grindagger nothing like supporting a new version of a beloved franchise. If you liked 1 and 2 why not pay the gargantuan sum of £17? Which it is listed as on the store with a ps plus discount.

I've just run the first 3 levels and it's different and modern enough to stand on its own. If people don't support it and wait for the sales we may never see SoR 5.

@KratosMD My kids won't let me use either of the Xboxes, my stepson has game pass (which he never uses) as well the swine. So grabbed in on the ps4.

@kyleforrester87 nice one. It plays a tiny bit different to the megadrive games so far. More of a challenge and the set ups are unique. The levels have more variety and dangers. I love the different visual options. Played through the second level in retro mode and it looks great!

@ralphdibny running through the first 3 games on normal back to back will take you maybe 4 or 5 hours. Nice one buying the Limited Run version. I've got a copy of SoR 2, opened but mint with the manual for the megadrive. That's gone up in price a lot since SoR 4 has come to light.

@themcnoisy Valid point. Maybe I'll pick it up, however I already have enough of a backlog, so my reaction is more based on what i'm currently working through, as I'm at this very moment already working through God Eater 3, Ni No Kuni Remastered and Shenmue 2.

However, having said that SOR4 isn't exactly lengthy content, at least, not historically. Which leads me to another question, is it actually worth £17 for the amount of content you get?

@themcnoisy I don't think mint copies of sor2 or 3 were ever cheap resale anyway so I bet they're going for a ton now!

Will probably play through 1 and 2 in 3d on 3ds and go back to the PS3 mega drive collection for the third game as I believe the emulation was acceptable on that (unlike the mega drive collection for current consoles)

It depends on how you compare the £17 and what you would spend it on otherwise. You are currently playing long games, this is a comparatively short game, made to be replayed. You enjoyed the older games, you will enjoy this one.

it's the same gameplay as Streets of Rage 2, with enough quality of life improvements for a more modern game (you can't run or roll like SoR3). As @Quintumply review suggests, you have a lifetime score which brings gradually unlocking characters to make it worth blasting a couple of levels before turning to one in your backlog.

@ralphdibny SoR 3 has always been expensive - it was expensive at release, it didnt shift the units and was released towards the end of the Megadrives life. It's a good game to collect and for a boxed game with manual costs over £150 today! I'm surprised at SoR 2 a few years ago it was a tenner all in, that's rose to £30, not going to change anyones life but I'm happy.

@themcnoisy sweet, i've got some work to do (lucky me) - will get on it later! Can have a blast co-op if you like, not sure if I have my mic still (not seen it since we last played Destiny) but don't think it's essential for this.

Love the art style and some of the character designs. Are the characters in the game hand-drawn or 3D but made to look like fluid 2D hand-drawn animation cels? Not sure yet, but I might get it maybe when it's on sale.

I've had a quick blast with Gamepass on my laptop whilst I decide whether to get it digitally for PS4 or get the limited run games physical edition. So far the game is amazing and easily worth it's cheap asking price, the graphics are great and the gameplay is as good as ever with some added variety to the combos and unlockables that put games double its price to shame. Simply put, the best game I've played this year
