After years of not having Plus I subbed for one month to use cloud saves because I want to take the PS4 in a work trip and wanted the convenience. That said I don't think I will sub again anytime soon. So, in my PS5 I went to back up my saves. I went to the menu to do this, and everything was red saying some nonsense like the time I had is over. I tried to manually upload the saves, but it says that if I do a manual upload the auto upload will be cancelled? What???
Moving to PS4 games the nonsense continues as it tells me that the cloud storage is full even though I checked and it seems that I don't even use 10% of it.
Turns out there a hidden limit on the actual number of saves you have in the cloud!!!! The problem is that I had a ton of small saves in various (i.e. all) Final Fantasy games where I have manual saves in critical story parts because I may want to play again those areas. So, I had to DELETE saves I did not need that much to upload the Final Fantasy games I wanted uploaded.
To Sony's credit my old PS Vita saves are still in the service after all those years. However, in the end of the day, why this is so convoluted and why I paid for this bad service I have no idea.
