So, I recently finished my second playthrough of the brilliant The Last of Us and although I'm halfway through Miles Morales and having fun with it, I don't think it is a strong enough experience to sustain me.
Looking to start a brand new game this weekend but not sure what. Thinking Control, Rift Apart and A Plague Tale. Save ME 3 and second playthroughs of God of War and The Last of Us Part II for later in the year.
Edging towards A Plague Tale at present but what do you guys think?
@Col_McCafferty Plague Tale is great but can feel a bit like TLOU with rats with it's fairly bleak story and lots of sneaking around so it might feel a bit samey straight after TLOU itself.
Control is a really solid game which I recently finished and quite enjoyed but Rift Apart might be the best bet if you want to go for something as different as possible from what you've just played.
@Thrillho Thanks for the feedback, I was thinking the same thing about A Plague Tale in terms of the overall tone being similar to TLoU. Playing Miles Morales so perhaps two Insomniac Games titles back to back might be a bit much?
Control probably sits somewhere in between plus it's been a while since I played a slightly weird game. I have liked the aesthetics of Control ever since I first saw the trailer and the story and setting sounds really intriguing.
@Col_McCafferty That’s a tough one.
Having recently played 2 of the 3, my initial response was going to be in line with @Thrillho . Control and A Plague Tale are fantastic in their own ways, but after TLoU you’ll end up inevitably comparing APT to it and it will feel inferior, and Control’s story is wacky and a little hard to follow or get invested into at first, so you’ll end up probably initially be disappointed by the narrative side of things coming straight from TLoU. However, if Miles Morales didn’t hold your interest, I wonder if R&C will. It might come across as an empty narrative when placed side by side with TLoU.
Is it the lighter narrative in Miles Morales that is putting you off? If you’re hungry to some heavier and weightier storyline, maybe Death Stranding, Hellblade, or Returnal? I don’t know, just shooting in the dark here.
Of the original 3 though, do Control if you want quick gameplay combat with a X-files type of storyline. Do A Plague Tale if you’re hungering for a poor man’s The Last of Us with serious subject matter in a bleak world with stealth mechanics and not much twitch combat. And do A Rift Apart (granted I haven’t played this) if you need to clean your mind of serious matter and have some comic relief.
Edit: sorry for the simultaneous post — but yeah, Control might actually work for you, the more I think about it.
Don't get me wrong, I like Miles Morales and plan on seeing it through to it's conclusion but I am happy to play it in relatively short bursts. I need something to play in addition to it and have decided that Control will be that game.
@Col_McCafferty I really enjoyed Control so hope you do too.
I’d just say the combat feels a bit meh to start with until you unlock some of the additional abilities. The story is pretty confusing in the beginning too but that makes sense in the context of the game and eventually starts to come together.
@Thrillho@Col_McCafferty I’d agree with that, the combat really needs a bit of time before it properly gets there but when you get there it’s some of the best around.
The art style of the game is great though and your photo mode shots the other day @Thrillho reminded me just how good it looks.
@Col_McCafferty You loved my favorite game from last year (Final Fantasy 7 Remake), so you better love my favorite game from the year before that. No pressure.

Biggest disappointment about FF7 is that right now we have no idea when Part 2 will be coming out. Day One purchase for me when it finally does come out.
Control, I'll start tomorrow and share my thoughts when I can.
@Col_McCafferty Yeah, the joke people made about the story not finishing until PS6 may end up coming true. We'll see though.
Hope you enjoy Control. As much as I enjoy the game, for whatever reason it didn't click for me right away. I stopped playing it the first time, but then went back to it and restarted it (I don't remember how long in between). Ended up loving it the second time obviously.

@Col_McCafferty enjoy Controlsuch a good game. Super playable (particularly once you have all of the upgrades etc.), really interesting lore and location… one of my favourite games of 2019.
I was so burned out on FFVIIR after finishing my second run (I back-to-backed it) that the wait-for-part 2 is okay with me… for now. If it ain’t with us by 2023, I might start tweaking 😉
@Col_McCafferty Control’s a good one, especially now that the technical side has been all fixed. If anything else, it’s just an honest-to-god interesting new IP.
@Col_McCafferty I was the same with Miles Morales. The story is only about 4 hours long but the platinum, despite being easy ends up becoming a bit of a chore. They'll really need to freshen it up for the sequel. Maybe Queens or Brooklyn instead of Manhattan maybe.
I finally started up Judgment. Honestly... it feels like a more action driven Shenmue and I'm enjoying it. If this continues, I'll more than likely grab Lost Judgment as my Christmas game.
@velio84 just saw your post about Sekiro… and it is definitely a strange one in terms of difficulty. The mob enemies (grunts) are so easy due to the ability to stealth through the levels that that part actually feels far easier than your typical Souls but the bosses (& as you pointed out mini bosses) are more difficult than those from From’s previous series.
I think it’s a case of, if you have actually played a lot of Souls you are in a worse position than if you had come to Sekiro as your first From Soft game. Hardly any of the skills transfer effectively… yet are embedded in your gaming subconscious. My first suggestion is to not give up, as although you will feel like your getting your head smashed against a brick wall sometimes it is incredibly rewarding once it starts to click. Second is to be prepared to learn each bosses pattern, move-set and ‘rhythm’… this could take a while (& many deaths) on each one but as I’ve pointed out, once you start to connect-the-dots there is little else like it out there. A truly unique game.
@velio84@colonelkilgore I haven’t really played many FromSoft games except Bloodborne and part of the original Dark Souls. After reading your breakdown, perhaps my situation would be a good one for playing Sekiro. I’ve purposely kept it off my list of games because I see consistent remarks that it’s the hardest FromSoft game. Although I know that’s a topic of much debate, as a whole it seems it’s the most niche game from them (in an already niche genre of From fans) and one of the more divisive of their games. I hadn’t put it together that perhaps people say it’s the hardest game because these are Souls veterans talking.
In my mind, I had myself taking a From journey of making my way through the Souls games as sort of a build up to ready myself for the ultimate From challenge in Sekiro. From what you’re saying, that’s the complete opposite thing to do. Better to start with it and knock it out before taking on Demon’s Souls and all the Dark Souls games, before developing a dependence on “bad” habits that will get you killed in Sekiro?
Edit: the other reason I’ve put off Sekiro is not only my prejudice to leave it as only a last and culminating challenge, but also because the darn game is inconceivably still full price. Just checked PSN and it’s somehow still selling for $60. It’s a two and a half year old game! Still not discounted?!
For reference, other big games that came out around the same time, and even after, like DMC5, Nier Automata, The Outer Worlds, RE2 Remake, Metro Exodus, Borderlands 3…. are mostly in the $20 range consistently, or have DLC and PS5 enhanced directors cuts already like Death Stranding, Control, or A Plague Tale; or have been given away on PS Plus by now like Monster Hunter Iceborne, Wreckfest, The Show 19.
Sorry for the rant. Just confused why the game has held its value so long.
