@kyleforrester87 The VII side quests are pretty good. A lot more charming and tied into the local area.
As a comparison, in XV you'd have Bob McGenericpants, a cloned NPC standing in a copy-pasted petrol station, asking you to drive 5 miles away to bring him a tomato. In VIIR one of Marlene's friends is upset that all her friends have gone. She's standing in the Sector 7 playground as kids around her sword fight with sticks, get taught about the lifestream, or even talk about running away together. It turns out her friends are these three white cats. You carry on doing normal stuff in Sector 7 (rather than driving 5 miles away just for a tomato) and Tifa will occasionally notice a cat. Cloud tries to catch them but they just hiss and run away.
It's still technically a generic fetch quest but it's woven into your activities in Sector 7 anyway, the little girl isn't a generic NPC mannequin you've seen 500 times before, she's connected to a known character in Marlene, people in the slums react to what quests you've done so you feel like Cloud's becoming a kind of hero to them, and in turn he's slowly opening up and starting to care. There's even a big wooden score board thing keeping count of how many monsters you've killed to keep them safe and people offer their thanks as you walk past.
Then you have Noctis inexplicably going 10 miles out of his way to bring a generic NPC a potato. And no one cares. What are they gonna say anyway? There's the prince than brought Bob a potato - what a guy!
(The game does have a certain charm though, I really enjoyed it.. but I can’t properly explain why)
Is it because now you know what it's like to have friends? 😉
But seriously, I know what you mean. Other than the trash combat (VIIR is ridiculously better in that regard - well, every regard) the bigger issue for me was how any main plot elements could be absent for hours at a time. I'm over 30 hours in and I still can't remember the names of most antagonists or have any emotions towards them because I've seen them for about 20 seconds so far. VIIR is basically the anti-XV. Like drinking an antidote after being poisoned by a nasty dose of XV.
Yes, FF15 was a huge disappointment, it felt like at least 60% of the story and characters were missing. All the time was spent on the graphics it seems.
I wanna play FF IX PS1 again.
15 years ago i have finished it but i wanna play again.
I miss that game. 🤗
I have found FF IX PS1 in Brand New condition from my local online shopping website with affordable price.
But i have to halt my purchase due to Corona virus pandemic. 😔
Btw, how does it look when FF IX PS1 being played on PS2 Fat scph 55000 on HD TV ?
I use PS3 component cable for my PS2 fat.
@Anti-Matter Why not just play it on an emulator? You can even enable fake scanlines so it'd look like it was being played on a pre-HD TV if that's what you'd prefer, or go to the other extreme and set the 3D elements of the game to a HD resolution.
Edit: Oh I misread your post. I thought you were saying you already had the game but wanted to play it on a PS1 so we're trying to buy one. Then that since you couldn't gets PS1 you wondered if it'd look different on a PS2.
Still, you could still emulate it and buy the game anyway, using an ISO while you wait for your game to arrive. Or just buy it on Steam or PS4 and try to put up with the horrible UI of those versions.
@Matroska
I don't play pirated games anymore.
No more emulators, homebrew, jailbreak, modded machines and pirated games.
I play with original games only.
I don't want digital download games.
I want physical games.
There is the HD Remaster on Switch, but i will wait until there is a physical release.
While waiting, i can consider the PS1 version first.
Has anyone playing VIIR got the Biker Boy achievement? If so, can you say in spoiler tags what you did to get it, please? I just got praised by Jessie after the bike part but didn't get it. I know it's possible to do this part badly and get negative comments from her - that's what happened to me so I reloaded - but now that I got the good version of the scene, I still don't have the trophy.
@JohnnyShoulder even knowing it has been dramatically changed at the end is a bit of a spoiler for me 😂 I would like to be surprised, even if negatively!
I still need to play the demo, but this game barley missed a pre-order from me. I’m still worried about when it could be possibly finish, but I’ve slowly gotten hyped for it and want to play it now. The only thing that stopped me was it releasing so close to the mammoth that is Persona 5: Royal. 10 days just isn’t enough distance for two big games.
@Anti-Matter I’m playing FFIX on PS4 just now, just got to Ipsen’s Castle. It might be a digital download but it’s the same game with added QOL changes.
@JohnnyShoulder Believe me, I wasn’t spoiled on purpose. Unfortunately I have a brother that loves nothing more than to spoil things for me such as Star Wars, games I’ve been hyped for ages etc. I wouldn’t dream of spoiling anything for you all in the thread even though I know the gist of the story. All I can say is that I’m kinda glad I didn’t pre-order.
@LieutenantFatman I’m enjoying it but the frame rate annoys me a lot. The soundtrack’s brilliant and I absolutely love a logo for every single area, it reminds me of Kingdom Hearts 2 in that respect. The abilities coming from equipment is a great idea too, I really like that aspect of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
Man, FFVIIR is kicking my ass on Normal (the hardest option at first). Not too bad at first apart from the Guard Scorpion but the bit leading to the 2nd reactor and the reactor itself... Well, I end most fights at less than half HP with everyone. Just had a fight against two Sweepers (the mechs you get in reactors in the original too) and Barret was dead 10 seconds in. In the original that wouldn't be a hard fight. Unlike most FFs you really have to be aware of elemental weaknesses - and using the stagger mechanic is often critical. About to fight Air Buster and dreading it, tbh. Not something I'd say if playing the original.
@Matroska Haha, maybe that Hard Mode playthrough will be a bit more of a challenge than I anticipated.
For the record, I found the Scorpion battle in the demo to be challenging enough on the Normal difficulty setting, so it'll be interesting to see how challenging this game is for me.
How difficult is it to buy more phoenix downs/potions so far? And does materia play a significant role in the game like it does in the original?
Currently Playing: Fields of Mistria (PC); Cookie Clicker (PC); Metaphor: ReFantazio (PC); Overboard! (PC)
@Ralizah Well materia is very useful because of course that's how you do elemental damage. There are enemies that either only take decent damage from their weakness or need to be staggered, which is hard to do without exploiting their weakness.
You can buy a lot of normal potions but the 350hp they heal is soon terrible compared to your max HP and incoming damage. Hi-Potions are better but expensive enough you wouldn't want to keep buying them. The game really wants you to avoid damage rather than heal through it. Phoenix Downs are pretty rare - and expensive enough that about 14 hours in, I'd spend all my money if I bought about 10 of them.
In the original you can tear through most enemies just using normal attacks - and grenades, Molotovs etc are an easy way to kill anything regardless of your stats. Most materia is kind of pointless, I'd say. Never using elemental magic wouldn't be too hard a challenge, though it'd be a lot tougher without the stat boosting ones.
In the remake it seems a lot more woven into the battle system and there aren't any obvious tricks I've seen yet, like in the original you sell all ethers, as you don't really need to use magic, and buy a lot of grenades. That'll get you through Midgar regardless of your stats and equipment.
