@AgentCooper The controls definitely take some getting used to. I remember struggling with them and also sometimes with the camera. The Boy feels a bit ‘floaty’ and inaccurate to control, and of course the control of Trico is the most hotly debated part of this whole game. When I was playing the game, what was repeatedly preached to me was the need to treat Trico like a real animal; in the sense that she’s not going to follow commands perfectly and has her own thoughts and ideas. It drove me nuts how I’d tell her to do something and she’d wander off and ignore me sometimes, but then sometimes she’d obey. That’s probably the number one issue that I had with the game and I gradually grew to tolerate it.
Moving The Boy around and his soft controls were easier for me to get accustomed to. I think that’s partly just a symptom of game mechanics at the time.
But, as you allude to, the overall package with the wonderful setting, the unique ideas of the game, and the general charm of it all makes these issues feel less annoying.

When are people wanting to start Resident Evil 4 for Halloween? It’s a decently chunky game if I remember right, and that’s discounting lost progress due to dying. Obviously we’ll be wanting to actually be playing it during true spooky season but it depends on people’s schedules when to get started.
I won't be playing RE4 as I finished it earlier this year, but I will participate in the discussions. But yeah it's definitely the longest Resi game I've played so far. It took me over 20 hours to finish it. So I recommend you guys start playing it ASAP if you want to finish it this month.
There's also the story DLC that's included in the PS4/Wii versions that will take another couple of hours.
I’m not sure if anyone is wrapping up The Last Guardian, but I’m pretty much ready to start RE4. I play games slow though, so a 20 hr game can take me a month whereas most people can do it in a week or two.

@nessisonett I'll sit this one out. I'm wanting to play the remake when it comes out and have everything be fresh. I've also still got to get round to last guardian, I'm away just now but I've wanted to play that game for a while. Shadow of the Colossus didn't hit for me quite the way I expected given the hype so curious how I'll take to it. Have a lot of other folk been playing it?
@AgentCooper The Last Guardian is certainly a game that you need to be in the right mindset for. It’s a chill game, in general, although it has its moments of combat and puzzle solving that can require concentration. But the overall pacing and style is quite artistic and contemplative that it might come across as boring if you’re needing something quick to blow off some steam or get your fix of exploding virtual objects.
When the mood strikes, you’ll probably really appreciate it, but if the timing isn’t right then you’re apt to be left with a bad impression of the game. Which would be a shame since I do think it’s a real hidden gem in the PS4 library.

With Halloween being two weeks away after the weekend, I reckon we’ll start Resident Evil 4 on Monday then. Resi 4, 5 and 6 as a bundle are currently in the sale for the same price as just buying Resi 4, at least in the UK. You can get it physically for about £12 on Amazon too. While I’m sure some people will be a bit unsure about playing this when it’s being remade soon, the other remakes have differed enough from the original game that it’s worth playing both!
@AgentCooper I can definitely relate. When I’m really busy or really stressed out (…when am I not? 😅) I sometimes just need “comfort food” style gaming. Sometime familiar and relatively mindless. With my recent crazy schedule I’ve been finding that solace in racing in circles with GT7, but I could see the allure of just creating chaos in an open sandbox would also be a refreshing escape and easy to jump in and out of.

I went ahead and started Resident Evil 4 a little ahead of schedule because I know I’ll be pressed for time during the next two weeks and I have some time this weekend.
It’s my first time to ever play this game, but I’ve played the remakes of RE1-3. I actually am going into fairly blind. Of course I’ve heard about it over the years, always being discussed in hushed tones and revered as one of the great games, but I know very little about what the game really is and what the storyline is about.
So far I like it, but I’m not yet sold on it’s why it’s so universally praised as a high point in but franchise.
I’m only at chapter 1-3 so far, but there’s been some pretty big difficulty spikes. It seems less about the survival aspects and more about the combat. But yet, there’s some resource management parts too, although ammo seems to be much less scarce. The enemies are just way more numerous at certain parts.
And the tank(ish) controls are borderline maddening. I’m gradually re-training my instincts to use the right stick to move the camera, but it’s pretty frustrating. And having to go to the menu each time to heal or change weapons is definitely something that needs to be updated.
Otherwise the game design is pretty good, with interconnected routes through the map, yet not too complex yet. It still feels very ‘resident evil-y’ even though it’s not set in Raccoon City anymore and is just completely different in style.

@RogerRoger Nostalgia can carry things quite a ways, for sure. Nevertheless, there’s some timeless RE charm I’m feeling so far. I will definitely drop lots of impressions as I play more.
I do think you’re better prepared for some of the aged mechanics since you played the older versions of RE1-3 rather than the remakes. It’s mainly the control scheme that feels difficult for me.
Also the game is really not very scary so far. I’d say much less than the first three. It has a slightly creepy vibe but surprisingly little gore, and even the tension is not on par with walking around the frightening halls of the Mansion and the Police Station. Again, maybe it’s a retro phenomenon where the less realistic visuals make the whole thing more charming and at times funny and corny (the dialogue is as B-movie as ever), so it’s not modern-day nightmare-inducing horror, which is a plus in my book.
@Th3solution That's the funny thing, when they announced the remake of RE4, I remember lots of people saying "What could they improve with the remake? The original experience was perfect". And all I could think was "Uh, how about the controls first of all?". While I didn't mind the tank controls after a while, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't prefer normal controls. Tank controls just make enemy encounters more difficult than they need to be.
Another thing the remake can improve upon is the visuals. RE4 isn't that particularly scary or atmospheric. While I haven't played RE2 Remake yet, I've seen gameplay that shows the game looking darker and therefore more frightening to play than the original. I think that would help make RE4 scarier as well.
So yeah, RE4 definitely needs a remake as it certainly isn't short of flaws.
Currently downloading the RE4 fan remaster files as I’ll be playing the PC version! Should give me a little bit of incentive to play this game again although it’s 30 odd GB 😂
I played Resi 4 remaster the year before the pandemic. While the GameCube original was in my top 10 games for a long time after I played it, the remaster was still good but I don't think I was engrossed as I was when I played the original as a teenager. I think there is something to be said for playing this game on a claustrophobic 4:3 CRT television. The smoothed over fuzziness adds to the atmosphere of the game. Wicked game though and I hope all who play it for the first (or millionth!) time enjoy it!
Resident Evil 4 is currently on sale in the PS Store in their Halloween Sale, just in case anybody else was interested in playing this throughout Halloween! It’s £6.39 here in the UK, not sure about other countries but I’m sure it’ll be a similar price.
@RogerRoger Now you’ve got another reason to get the Resident Evil triple pack, it’s £15.99 just now, down from £39.99!
Ya know I haven't played Resident Evil 4 since the Wii Edition (Which was actually the first time I played it) so... It's been like 12 or so years since I've last played it.
In fact I kinda don't remember a whole lot about it to be perfectly honest other then enjoying it and a brief recollection of what happens. That and recognising the starting village area and some of the enemies in the trailer for the remake.
So I'm joining in this month for game club (and just this month). A bit late coming into this but Resi 4 isn't that long from what I remember so... Yeah!
Nice to be back for GC if only temporary @nessisonett
... Good God though my first attempt at trying it was utterly abysmal!
There goes my somewhat cocky attitude I had going in. I didn't even get to the village section!
The controls are rather crusty. Moreso then the older titles I'd personally say.
I have been playing RPG's mostly as of late and I can't quite honestly recall the last third person shooter I played (Uncharted last year?) so I expected to be a bit rusty with the playstyle but... Wow. I was truly terrible
