I looked up to this man, he knew how to turn something around. Something we can all learn. And he had the best of intentions for the industry.

Alas, this is sad news. He will be missed by many, across the world. His legacy will live on.

This is Goodbye Iwata-San. Direct from us.

Terrible news. Obviously I can only go by what I saw but I can say he seemed like a genuinely nice guy and was one of the few industry people who acted like a real person. This is a very sad, huge, loss for gaming. Thoughts and prayers for him and his family.

I can't say enough about what a great man he was.

Iwata was a man who refused to lay off workers in tough times because he cared about them. He was a man who voluntarily reduced his own pay for the welfare of the company as a whole. He was a man that took pride in his work, and whose first and foremost desire was to put a smile on the faces of those who played Nintendo's games.

He oversaw both Nintendo's most lucrative years with Wii, GBA and DS and Nintendo's hardest years (Gamecube and Wii). He was a man who always strived to push forward with innovation- always strived to lead rather than follow.

This is a truly terrible loss. Iwata was a great man.

Wow. I don't know what to say. He's easily one of Nintendo's most recognisable people, it's hard to imagine him being gone.

That quote really does summarize the character of Mr Iwata. And why people loved him so much. Because underneath it all he really was just a gamer like us.

He fought so hard to make games all about fun. The fact he made games only made him a better CEO.
RIP Iwata, you will always be remembered. I can't stop crying about this.

That's terrible, I though this was metaphorical when I clicked on it, but it's not sadly. May his family have peace.

What a shock. May he rest in peace where ever he is now. Has a cause of death been reported yet?

@andrew20: Ah that's a shame. I remember now reports saying he was at times in ill health but I never heard what from. At least he is at peace now.

From articles I've read it seems like a fair number of people thought the worst was over. Makes this even more sad.

"And my name is Iwata. I'm about making games and I'm about playing games. Last night, I played Super Smash Bros. That's my game. I kicked some... you know what and I took his name. His name was Reggie. As Nintendo president, I'm also all about asking questions. So Reggie, I have a question for you. Who's your daddy?" E3 2005

Your the daddy and may the gaming gods allow you to play games in the big arcade in the sky.

Awful news today, especially as I thought he'd overcome his illness from last year.

Posted this in the article/comments but is worthy of repeat here as it sums him up for me: "Video games are meant to be just one thing. Fun. Fun for everyone."

Whether you liked what's happened to Nintendo under his leadership isn't important, he always tried to make things fun for millions. Not enough people like him in this world (never mind this industry), sadly there's one less now.

Rest in peace / gomeifuku wo inorimasu.

(dunno how you put in pics but this https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CJx_YqJWEAAH0WJ.jpg:large is just... brought a tear to my eye)
