Topic: The Best Platform Games from 1985-2015

I have a list. Its 30 years of great platform games. Problem is - its not filled in yet. Everyone can pick 1 game to add to the list every 48 hours. Only 1 game can occupy each year and the year has to be the games release date. This list doesn't have to be filled in chronologically, but the games have to be Platform games. Good luck.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze / 2014

Why? DKC2 should be an easy nominee, but the fifth installment is not only overlooked, it just may be (arguably) the best post 2010 platformer. Retro just has a knack for level design that other Nintendo published titled don't even match.

Super Mario Bros 3 1990 (IIRC)

SMB3 is still better than world IMO. What an amazing game, especially if you consider the fact that it came out in 1988 in Japan.

I agree on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014). It's arguably the best platformer on the Wii U, and perhaps on any system this generation. Super Mario World (1990) and Super Mario 64 (1996) deserve a spot as well; for perfecting the platforming genre and bringing in into 3D respectively. The original New Super Mario Bros. (2006), was very good as well and doesn't suffer from the same critique that the other games in the New series got. Super Mario Sunshine in 2002 and Super Mario Galaxy in 2007.

I'm trying to think of a good platformer other than Mario or Nintendo related, it's quite difficult, as they perfected the genre and they the only big developer that still makes good platformers to this day.

for me it's wario land 3 (2000). It was a hard choice between super mario world and any of the 4 wario land games but wario land will always be my favourite nintendo game and platformer.

@themcnoisy: Sure, Super Mario 64 it is then. I thought you were compiling a list of best platformers in general, but now I've read your post a little more carefully I understand what you meant.

Dizzy was one of my favourites and Super Mario 64 was in my opinion the best 3D platformer because of how innovative it was at the time - It led to great games like Banjo Kazooie and Conkers Bad Fur Day. Up until SM64 came out, I was mainly a 2D platform gamer - Certainly made up the bulk of my gaming collection - One of my favourites though I can't even remember the name now! However after SM64, I really can't go back to playing these and they ALL feel so dated to me.

As SM64 and Dizzy have been mentioned, I am going to have to pick Conkers Bad Fur Day - purely because it was the first and probably only platformer (at least that I can think of) designed purely for Adults and lets be honest, its also one of the best games ever too!

Sly 2 - 2004 One of the best, if the best platforming game ever made. Great gameplay, story, and characters make it a true classic.

@themcnoisy: How did I not see that haha. I'll go for 2007 - Portal, as I'd say it's a puzzle-platformer

I'll follow up @Anchorsam_9 and say Crash 2 for 1997. Easily one of the best sequels to a game ever. Not as hard as Crash 1 and still had some old school difficulty if you like that kind of thing, and much better control that time around.
