Hey guys, some help from those of you in Nintendojoland would be appreciated.
Long story short, I have won a Wii U Premium Mario Kart 8 pack. I'm going to keep it for my daughter for Xmas, but her and her mom don't have stable Internet access. So I'm wondering if it's best for me to 'set it up' prior to gifting it. As in, are there recommended software updates and such that it would be beneficial to download and install on first boot?

I'm not sure if the day one update still needs to be downloaded manually or if it now is just installed so I would set the console up to check. You may also want to download patches for games and stuff.
Definitely a good idea to do a setup before giving it to her. I'm not sure there's anything essential right now but there might be by the time Christmas rolls around.
I bought the Wii U back at launch and at that time there was a patch you had to install prior to playing it. Now I am not sure if they come pre installed or not. As a precaution I would hook it up prior to and see if there are any patches to install or what not.
You can always ask over at Nintendolife to see if anyone can answer your question
