Undertale (PS4)
- PS Store price: $14.99/£11.99
- Lowest ever price: $8.99/£7.19
Undertale might not look like much, but it tells one of PS4's most memorable stories. You've fallen into the sealed-off land of monsters, and embark on a quest to get home, but you also hold the key to breaking the barrier between worlds. The story is carried by a brilliant supporting cast of characters that help and hinder you on your journey, and the unique combat turns the RPG formula on its head. Subversive, ingenious, and dripping with personality, Undertale is not to be missed.
Valiant Hearts: The Great War (PS4)
- PS Store price: $14.99/£11.99
- Lowest ever price: $1.94/£2.99
Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a poignant and powerful reminder of the significant human toll borne of the wars that we so often act out in our favourite video games. It doesn’t exaggerate or embellish its subject matter, but rather tells a story rooted in historical accuracy and human emotion. And while the puzzler’s gameplay isn’t revolutionary by any means, its awe-inspiring visual design, clever soundtrack, and thoughtful plot will break your heart in the best possible way.
Venba (PS5)
- PS Store price: $14.99/£11.99
- Lowest ever price: $7.49/£5.99
Venba is a heartfelt narrative adventure about a family, and how they connect via the medium of food. To say much more would give away what makes the game special; it's the definition of short but sweet, combining cooking with a meaningful, earnest story about family and the challenges of life.
Balatro (PS5)
- PS Store price: $14.99/£12.99
- Lowest ever price: $11.99/£10.39
Balatro puts an ingenious roguelike spin on poker, and it plays unlike anything else. Each run has you using poker hands to score a points target, but the real fun comes when you start to build upon your deck of playing cards with an enormous variety of modifiers, upgrades, and augmentations. The ways that all its various mechanics intertwine create huge potential for outrageously powerful synergies, and watching the numbers tot up as your regular hand is boosted by special Jokers and card effects is incredibly satisfying. There's lots of stuff to collect, difficulty levels to conquer, and challenges to complete. There's a reason it's one of 2024's breakout hits — it's a fantastic, unique roguelike.

Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure (PS5)
- PS Store price: $14.99/£14.99
- Lowest ever price: $7.49/£7.49
Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is a delightfully inventive puzzle game that weaves in a neat narrative to pull you through. Playing as a character that literally moves the world around her as she goes, this is effectively a series of slide puzzles set within a fleshed out world full of whimsical character. Always building on its core idea in imaginative ways, this is brilliant fun from start to finish.
Jazzpunk: Director's Cut (PS4)
- PS Store price: $14.99/£14.99
- Lowest ever price: $3.74/£3.74
Still utterly unique, Jazzpunk is a brilliantly surreal comedy adventure full of zany twists and turns. An espionage plot is at its core, but along the way you'll be free to explore a series of levels with all kinds of characters and objects to interact with, many leading to unique minigames or distractions that'll leave you baffled, laughing like an idiot, or both. It's not for everyone, but it's one hell of a ride.
GRIS (PS5)
- PS Store price: $16.99/£13.99
- Lowest ever price: $3.39/£2.59
GRIS is a strikingly beautiful game, and nothing else before or since looks quite like it. This painterly adventure always looks amazing, and while the gameplay is relatively shallow, it's a fun platforming journey. Filled with evocative imagery, simple puzzles, and gorgeous music, this is well worth experiencing.
Thank Goodness You're Here! (PS5)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£14.99
- Lowest ever price: $13.99/£10.49
Set in a fictitious Yorkshire town, Thank Goodness You're Here! is probably the best, and certainly the most ridiculous, portrayal of England in games. While waiting to meet with the mayor of Barnsworth, you help out dozens of people in its community with their bizarre problems, leading you through a linear but varied journey packed with laughs. Its gameplay may be simple, but this short adventure will live long in your memory thanks to great voice work and visual gags you won't be able to forget.
Transistor (PS4)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£14.99
- Lowest ever price: $3.99/£2.99
Transistor is a gorgeous narrative action adventure from Supergiant Games, a studio that doesn't miss. This follow-up to Bastion weaves an engaging story through a beautiful but sinister cyberpunk setting, then presents you with cerebral combat encounters with a strategic streak. Polished to a fine sheen in basically every respect, this is a fantastic and heartfelt experience.
Hyper Light Drifter (PS4)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.49
- Lowest ever price: $5.99/£4.64
A top-down action game dripping in atmosphere, Hyper Light Drifter is a melancholic journey through a cursed land. Simple but engaging combat and exploration of its expansive, pixel art world makes this an engrossing experience throughout, delivering an effective story without uttering a single word. This is a modern classic indie title everyone should play.
Bloodborne (PS4)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $9.99/£7.99
The spiritual successor to FromSoftware's supremely popular Dark Souls property, Bloodborne fuses the lip-smackingly satisfying combat of its predecessors with a frighteningly fast pace, resulting in the most intense action on the PS4. Harrowing Lovecraftian-like fiends and larger-than-life bosses vie for the attention of your Saw Blade, as the dingy districts of Yharnam intertwine. A steep difficulty curve can make this occasionally putrid escapade appear off-putting, but soldier through the skin and sinew and you'll find a bloodbath worth submerging in.
Chicory: A Colorful Tale (PS5)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $9.99/£7.99
If you're looking for a breather after those big, violent blockbusters, Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a perfect antidote. This charming indie game will pull you in with its adorable characters and cartoonish aesthetic, but it pairs all that with compelling gameplay and a touching story. You wield a magical brush with which you can paint the environment however you see fit, and you'll also use colour to solve puzzles and even fight bosses, solo or in co-op. An imaginative and heartfelt game.
Dave the Diver (PS5)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $13.99/£11.19
Dave the Diver, like the sea, is far deeper than you think it is. It charms with its attractive visuals and addictive loop of diving for fish and running a restaurant, but it never rests on its laurels, always finding new ways to enhance the fun. There's never a dull moment, whether it's a whole new feature expanding the gameplay, an unexpected new story beat, or another hilarious cutscene to enjoy. It's this constant reinvention and surprise that makes the game so compelling, even through the occasional rougher moments. If you've yet to experience it for yourself, we'd highly encourage that you take the plunge.
Everybody's Gone to the Rapture (PS4)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $9.99/£7.99
Sometimes, nothing beats a quiet walk through the English countryside, but Everybody's Gone to the Rapture puts a cruel twist on that peaceful idea. This narrative adventure has you exploring an idyllic village where everyone has mysteriously vanished, leaving behind only faint memories of their lives. With gorgeous visuals, a wonderful soundtrack, and a haunting story at its core, this is a top drawer walking sim.
Fallout 4 (PS5)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $4.99/£3.99
Fallout 4 may be found lacking in the role-playing department, but the gameplay loop is absolutely top notch. Post-apocalyptic Boston makes for an especially dense open world setting, packed with all kinds of secrets and irradiated enemies. Meanwhile, much improved gunplay allows combat to flourish once you've established a specific character build, and V.A.T.S. — the mechanic that lets you slow time to aim your shots — remains one of Bethesda's best ever innovations. Technical quibbles and some dumb storytelling aside, Fallout 4 can keep you busy for hundreds of hours.
God of War (PS4)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $9.99/£7.99
They only went and did it, didn’t they? God of War was as washed up as a Greek god after the fall of Olympus, but Sony Santa Monica found a way to reinvent protagonist Kratos and inject him into an all-new mythology at the same time. This alternate take on PlayStation’s bald-headed barbarian leans heavily on story, but it never forgets what made the series sing to begin with: fantastic action, larger-than-life set-pieces, and a fantasy world that’s begging to be explored. For our money it's the best PS4 exclusive on the market.
Inside (PS4)
- PS Store price: $19.99/£15.99
- Lowest ever price: $4.59/£3.99
Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.

Great list! The only problem is I own or have played them almost all of them. But thanks for the heads up on Kill Knight, Arranger & Jazzpunk and the prod to push a few of these up my backlog.
Nex Machina lowest ever price £3.99
YEAH RIGHT!
Writing up cheap Sonic Mania but then linking to the more expensive and improved Sonic Mania Plus seems a bit off. TBF it has bothered me for years now that places still promote the base game after Plus released but you aren't helping.
Thanks for the reminder on Balatro. There's currently a version, Balatro+, on Apple Arcade I've been meaning to try. I mean it's a card playing game, how bad can it be?
Whenever I think of the best game deals under $20 I always immediately think of The Witcher 3 Complete. Not sure what the normal price is but I bought it for $15 years ago and it seems to be on sale for that price fairly regularly. Probably the best $15 I've ever spent on gaming. Also why I never pay full price or buy games when they release, even great games can get better over time. Nintendo 1st party excluded, even 8 yo Switch games are still $60 w/ extra for dlc.🤑
Fez is still awesome (whatever you think of a certain individual attached to it). I’m getting Thank Goodness Your Here as soon as I’ve finished System Shock. Just Crow Things looks really cool too. I’d highly recommend Animal Well too (and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes if you like hardcore puzzles)
For me, games at this level mean not having to sit through hours of dialogue or cutscenes. They cut to the chase and let you just play the game!
I don’t understand the hype about Journey. It wasn’t really a game; it required no skill or effort to complete, which you could do in a couple of hours.
Vampire Survivors is the best game you'll ever buy in terms of value for money.
Some absolute bangers in here. Anyone who hasn't played Supergiant's back catalogue really needs to get on that though, they are all superb.
What Remains of Edith Finch is my gaming comfort food. I've played through it so mahy times yet still uncover minute details each playthrough. Truly incredible. Also love Rapture (mainly for the soundtrack), and Thank Goodness You're Here is pretty hilarious.
I loved a Short Hike. Played it a few years ago on Series X and its such a chill game. You can easily beat it in a couple of hours and its a great way to get quick achievements.
