Bugsnax Guide: Tips and Tricks for Beginners
Let's go through some of the basics of Bugsnax, as well as provide some general hints for new players.
Controls
Here is the controller layout for Bugsnax:
Input | Action |
---|---|
Left stick | Move |
Right stick | Control camera |
X | Jump |
Square | Interact / Talk |
Circle | Crouch |
Triangle | Feed Bugsnax to NPCs |
L3 | Sprint |
R3 | Equip SnaxScope |
Touch pad | Open journal |
L1 / R1 | Turn pages in journal |
L2 | Aim with certain equipment |
R2 | Take picture with SnaxScope / Use certain equipment |
Scoop Up Those Sauces
In addition to the trapping equipment you unlock, there are naturally growing sauces you can use to attract specific species of Bugsnax — Ketchup, Mustard, Ranch Dressing, Hot Sauce, Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Cheese. If you open up the journal and view the Bugsnax you've scanned or captured, it will list which sauces each creature loves or hates, and this can make catching them easier.
It's always good to keep a healthy stock of each sauce, because you never know which ones you'll need. Fortunately, once you discover a sauce on the island, that plant will appear in Wambus' garden in Snaxburg, giving you essentially an infinite supply.
Scan Everything
You play as a journalist, so it's best to document everything, right? With a press of R3, you'll pull out the SnaxScope, which is a silly name for a camera. This camera can scan things when you take their picture. This applies to Bugsnax themselves, but you can also scan lots of other items in the world. It's just good practice to scan stuff, because it gives you that extra bit of information.
Don't Ignore the Side Quests
Bugsnax has a surprising number of side quests to complete as you locate each character. While you can usually continue the main story without playing too many of these, we'd advise that you complete them when you can. Not only do they contain lots of extra dialogue with the island's inhabitants and fill out their characters, the side quests also lead to some pretty exciting encounters. We'll leave it at that, but it's in your best interest to see and do everything the game has to offer.
Remember to Donate to Gramble's Ranch
Once you get Gramble to return to Snaxburg, he'll open up his ranch, where you can donate any Bugsnax you've caught so he can keep them as pets. Why would you do this, exactly? Well, donating to Gramble's ranch will increase your inventory space, meaning you can carry more Bugsnax at any given time. This definitely comes in handy later on, so we would urge you to donate when you can. If you max out your inventory slots by donating, you'll even earn a Trophy!
You Can Combo Your Bugsnax Catching Tools
As you play through the game, you unlock a series of tools with which to capture the titular critters. The important thing to remember is that you can use some of them in tandem, and in some cases, this is a necessity.
For example, you can attach the Trip Shot to the Buggy Ball, giving you a more mobile trip wire that can help you with tricky Bugsnax. You can also use the Lunchpad to send your Snak Trap up towards flying Bugsnax, and you can coat the Buggy Ball in sauce to act as a lure that you can control. It's worth experimenting, in other words.
Bugsnax Can Help You Catch Other Bugsnax
Some Bugsnax can be tricky to capture, but don't forget this secret weapon: other Bugsnax. Particularly aggressive creatures may attack others, which in most cases will stun them and allow you to run up and catch them in your net.
You Can't Die
If you were worried about this at all, you needn't be. There is no way to lose health or die in Bugsnax. In fact, there aren't really any fail states at all. You're safe!
You Can Jump Back Into the Game After the Credits Roll
Without spoiling anything, the ending of Bugsnax is very final. There's a point at the end of the game that alerts you, saying if you accept, then you won't be able to catch Bugsnax or finish other side quests. However, don't worry too much about this.
Once you complete the game and the credits roll, you'll be back at the main menu. If you select your save from the Load Game screen, it will load you back in before that point of no return, so you can continue catching Bugsnax, finish off side quests, and earn any missing Trophies.
That about does it for our big Bugsnax guide. Have you caught them all yet, or are you still tackling Snaktooth Island? Discuss your findings in the comments section below.

So in the end, this game actually was about something?
Has this article come out now to try and attract all those Xbox Game Pass gamers to this site as the game is now on there?
This game never appealed to me personally...
@BAMozzy maybe they have just in time , but even if they have or not nice guide
Very strange that you publish this article on the day the game drops on Xbox GamePass 🤔 did you upload it to the wrong site? 😉
I tried it on Xbox Gamepass yesterday but did not last 30 minutes. It feels like a kids game and the thought of endless taking pictures and chasing after bugs or snacks or whatever left me cold.
