If you need help on your hunts but you're not feeling particularly sociable, there's a way to simply welcome NPC bots — known as Support Hunters — into your game. These AI-driven companions will assist you in battle, just like a regular player would.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to summon Support Hunter NPC bots:

  • Speak to Alma when you're outside of battle (in camp or out in the field)
  • Select 'Post / Join Quest'
  • Select 'Settings'
  • Change 'Multiplayer Settings' to 'Only Support Hunters' (you can also select ' Players and Support Hunters' if you want to play with other players and have the bots fill out the rest of your group)
  • If you want Support Hunters to join your quest automatically, change 'Automatic SOS Flare' to 'On' — otherwise you'll need to fire off an SOS flare upon activating a quest
  • If you set 'Max Members' to 3 or 4, you'll be joined by two or three Support Hunter bots, but no Palicos will be around the help you out
  • If you set 'Max Members' to 2, you'll be joined by just one Support Hunter bot, and you'll both have Palicos

There are three Support Hunters who can join you (and it's always random):

  • Rosso, a Light Bowgun user
  • Alessa, a Lance user
  • Olivia, a Hammer user

Support Hunters do not upgrade their equipment as you progress through the game, but their health and strength will scale appropriately depending on the enemy. Support Hunters can also use group healing items if your health is low.

Support Hunters can place traps, and they'll even put down things like explosive barrels if you do the same.

Support Hunters can be KO'd, but they're usually very competent in battle.

You cannot have Support Hunters follow you around the maps — they only help out during a hunt.
