PS5 SSD: How Much Storage Space Does It Have? Guide

How much storage space does PS5's SSD have? With all games requiring an install and many choosing to purchase software through the PlayStation Store, you may be wondering how much storage space there is on PS5, especially if you're planning to purchase the PS5 Digital Edition (See Also: PS5 Digital Edition vs PS5: What's the Difference?). PS5 SSD: How Much Storage Space Does It Have?

PS5's SSD has an unorthodox 825GB of storage space. This is an unusual number, as the PS4 was primarily available in 500GB and 1TB configurations. However, we suspect it has a lot to do with the custom design of the console's storage solution. You can find out how it compares to both the Xbox Series X and PS4 Pro through the following links: PS5 vs Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S: Full Tech Specs Comparison and PS5 vs PS4: Full Tech Specs Comparison.

It’s worth keeping in mind that while Sony is advertising 825GB of storage space, it won’t all be available out of the box. Because of the way storage space is calculated, you’ll get a maximum of 667GB when converted to account for the correct file format and any operating system features.

PS5 SSD: How Many Games Can You Store on It?

The exact number of games you'll be able to store on the PS5's SSD will depend on the size of the software you want to install. Some games require less than 1GB to install, while others can go up to 100GB. Realistically, if the average file size of your library is around 40GB, you should be able to comfortably store around 15 games, but your mileage will vary.

It's worth noting that the custom nature of PS5's SSD could reduce overall file sizes, as developers will no longer need to duplicate data in order to reduce read speed. However, next-gen games are likely to have higher-resolution assets, which could ultimately increase overall file sizes. We'll need to wait and see.
