Can you save and quit in Returnal? Can you save a run part way through and come back to it? As part of our Returnal guide, we're going to answer your questions about suspending game progress, saving, and quitting. If you're looking for tips on how to stay alive in the game for longer, see our guide — Returnal: How to Not Die.
Returnal: Can You Save and Quit?
Following an update to the game, it is now possible to save and quit a run and come back to it later. Once you have downloaded and installed the latest patch, you will see the above pictured message when you next start up Returnal.
During play, as long as you're not in the middle of a combat encounter, you can pause the game and select 'Suspend Cycle'. Doing so creates a save, and you'll safely be able to then quit the game. Once you return, the game will load up at the point you suspended the cycle, and you can carry on. Each suspend is only usable once, but you can make multiple suspends during the course of a run.
What Happens When You Quit Returnal Mid-Run?
If you quit the game half-way through a cycle without using the Suspend Cycle feature, that run will be lost. When you start the game up again, you will be back at the Helios crash site. You don't retain your current run if you close the game and then boot it back up — unless you use Suspend Cycle as outlined above.

My PS5 crashes about 30% of the time I use rest mode for PS5 games. This is extremely frustrating to lose progress.
