Silent Hill 2 allows you to adjust the difficulty of your playthrough in relation to 2 different parameters: the Combat and the Puzzles. Changing the Combat difficulty affects how much damage you deal and take from enemies while the Puzzles difficulty influences how involved and tough the puzzles in the game are, potentially adding more steps or tougher riddles to solve. For your first playthrough, we recommend setting both Combat and Puzzles to the Standard difficulty option. If you're looking to use more of our Silent Hill 2 guide, our Walkthrough also covers a playthrough set to Standard.

Once you have a feel for the game and wish to start a New Game+ run, you can test yourself on Hard. As the main menu explains, the Combat difficulty can be changed during any playthrough, to either make it easier or harder. However, once you set your Puzzles difficulty, you can't change it. If you want to adjust it — either to make it easier or harder — you'd need to start a new playthrough.
