Picking between Belle or Wise in Zenless Zone Zero may feel like a difficult decision, but it all comes down to personal preference. There is no definitive protagonist to select, as the game will remain largely identical irrespective of who you choose.

However, there are a few things to consider:

You'll be controlling your chosen character around New Eridu City, so pick the protagonist you personally prefer the look of
In the English version, Belle is voiced by Courtney Steele, while Wise is voiced by Stephen Fu
Regardless of which protagonist you pick, the other character will become your "assistant" in the game

Belle is arguably the more stylish of the two Phaethon siblings, as she sports striking blue hair and asymmetrical socks. Wise's slender frame is undoubtedly handsome, but he's a little more reserved in his looks, opting for inconspicuous grey locks and a timeless sports jacket and jeans combo.

In terms of personality, Belle is a lot more energetic and in-your-face, while Wise is generally more cerebral and sedate. You'll be spending time with both protagonists whichever you pick, though, so you'll get to know each of the characters equally well.

One small difference depending on which protagonist you pick is who will be shown in the background of the pause screen. Unsurprisingly, you'll see Wise resting on the Random Play couch if you pick him, or you'll get Belle if you opt for her. As you build relationships with other characters it's possible to change the pause screen, but this feature isn't unlocked until later in the game.

Arguably the biggest change that will occur depending on which protagonist you pick is that you'll have access to a different bedroom in the Random Play base building. While all of the features and functions of the bedroom will be consistent across both characters, the décor will be unique to the personality of the character you choose.

While it's an unusual inconsistency, Wise can run slightly faster than Belle around New Eridu City. This perhaps reflects his longer legs, although it's rare for a game to represent height in this way. We haven't got out a stopwatch and compared the two scientifically, but if getting around as quickly as possible is imperative to you, we'd recommend you pick Wise as your protagonist.

As of the time of publication, there's no way to change the look or style of Belle or Wise. However, HoYoverse has released outfits for its other games in the past, most notably Genshin Impact, so it's possible alternative costumes or styles may be released in the future.

Unlike in Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail, where you can name the Traveller or Trailblazer respectively, you can't change the name of Belle or Wise. You will, however, be given the opportunity to come up with an alter-ego for the siblings' Proxy work, and this will become the name of your profile and account in the game.
