In the past, it’s been pretty easy to attribute the PlayStation Vita’s commercial woes in Japan to the platform's worrying lack of software. After all, whenever a new title has arrived, the system’s sales have almost always spiked. Worryingly, that wasn’t the case this week.
Despite netting two major new releases in dungeon crawler Demon Gaze and masturbation simulator Monster Monpiece, the platform failed to awaken from its slumber, shifting just 9,748 units in total – an increase of just 712 units over the previous week.
Still, it was bad week all around for the Japanese market. Every console except the Vita declined, with the PS3 and PSP moving just 18,322 units and 12,897 units respectively. DmC: Devil May Cry held strong on the former machine, finishing second in the software charts. Elsewhere, Hitman: Absolution managed a decent debut in fifth.
We’ve embedded the full breakdown of movers and shakers below. Let us know what you make of the Japanese gaming landscape in the comments section.

@belmont It's awesome that the game's doing well, but it's a shame it's not having much of an impact on hardware sales.
The japanese gaming market still baffles me.
Yes, a PSP game is #3 on the charts. This is...weird, to say the least. Looks like a slow period for everyone right now, though. Even the monster that is Animal Crossing is barely leading the charts. (relatively speaking. It's still doing really freakin' well)
They need to land exclusive Final Fantasy and Monster Hunter games in the worst way to turn this around. New, Vita-exclusive Kingdom Hearts, MGS and RE games wouldn't hurt either but the first two are the ones that would make the biggest impact and Sony has to find a way to make it happen.
yup the world need monster hunter on vita...if only monster hunter series were not developed by capcom...
Man you would really think a "masturbation simulator" would surely boost sales in japan. ;p
2 things jump out at me -
First, is that 3DS number correct? I thought everybody in Japan already bought one. And I don't see any new 3DS games this week.
Second, if the 3DS number is correct, how can Sony only sell 9,000 Vita in Japan?
On further reflection - PSP + Vita = 25k so that's almost a 1/3 of the 3DS. Though I Don't see any DS, DSi or DSi XL numbers for Japan, which seems odd.
