God of War: Ascension failed to come within striking distance of the sales tally of its predecessor God of War III in the UK. Chart-Track reports that the first week sales of Sony Santa Monica’s recently released prequel were less than half those of its predecessor, which launched all the way back in 2010. Unfortunately, exact figures are unavailable.
It wasn’t all bad news for Kratos’ origin story, though, as the title secured the second biggest first week sales in the series' history, beating out 2007’s stunning God of War II. We thoroughly enjoyed God of War: Ascension in our review, but did point to the overwhelming familiarity of the title as one of its major letdowns. Exactly what’s next for the franchise is unclear, but we reckon that switching to a new mythology would really freshen up the narrative and gameplay.

I was never interested in getting this...when a series of games gets this repetitive i lose interest, and prequels/ origin stories about a character that has been killed off just annoy me. I got similar franchise fatigue with assassins creed 2/brotherhood/revelations.
Shame. It's a fun game. But it is by far just more of the same. Hopefully it'll kick on although Sony now needs to drop the series for at least three years or maybe even longer.
I loved this game.
They tweeked the combat enough to make it extremely interesting and satisfying, in my opinion. You really had to strategize and focus to succeed instead of pressing square, square, triangle the whole game. At least on Hard anyway....
Maybe it's just me, but I'm finding Ascension to be very different from it's predecessors. The combat system is a lot more fluid, world interaction is fantastic and the new rage mechanic is pretty addictive.
I have to say I enjoyed Ascension the more I played. The lack of narrative is greatly missed.
It's a good game but it is just a cash-in so this expected. It'll be the same for Gears Judgement, decent sales on name alone but nothing special.
I'll wait til final sales figures are out worldwide because this article doesn't even make logical sense. How could it get the second biggest opening of the series, behind GoW 2, if it didn't even come close to GoW3? Wouldn't it be at least third if it's behind both these games?
