As expected, Fallout 4 absolutely scorched the UK sales charts this week, entering in first position and securing the third biggest launch of the year so far. The game β which sold over half of its copies on the PlayStation 4 despite an Xbox One marketing deal β bettered its predecessor Fallout: New Vegas' first week numbers by an outrageous 213 per cent, which underlines the growth of the post-apocalyptic property.
Elsewhere, it'll come as no surprise that Call of Duty: Black Ops III held on to second position, with FIFA 16 going for glory in third. Timed exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider entered in fourth, but despite its relatively reasonable position, NeoGAF number crunchers claim that sales are way down compared to its multiformat forebearer. We hate to say that we told you so β but we, er, did tell you so. The PS4 version's still a year off.
The remainder of the top ten was dominated by familiar faces, with Minecraft: Story Mode, Need for Speed, and Assassin's Creed Syndicate all filling out the spaces. This week will see the release of Star Wars Battlefront, which is sure to finish in first place. After that, we should start to see the chart settle down a bit, so it's going to be interesting to see what sticks to the top. Our bet is on the big November releases and FIFA 16.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 14th November, 2015

- FIFA 16
- Rise of the Tomb Raider
- Minecraft: Story Mode
- Need for Speed

Tomb Raider 4th? Ouch!
If the actual numbers for Tomb Raider are relatively bad we'll see it drop down the charts next week for sure.
Its no surprise that multi-platform games like Fallout 4 which has its marketing deal with MS sold more to PS owners as a percentage. The PS has a much bigger market share of gamers! I bet though that the percentage of Xbox owners that own Fallout 4 is higher than the percentage of PS owners that bought it. If the number of PS4 owners is double that of the number of XB1 owners - the sales would have to be 66% PS4 to 33% XB1 for the percentage of gamers who own Fallout 4 to be equal on each system.
Is it surprising that a multi-platform game's exclusive sequel sells less than it's predecessor on launch considering it's not available to anywhere near as many gamers as the previous! Its still the highest selling 'exclusive' game this week. I bet Crystal Dynamix/Square Enix knew it would not have the same sales figures as the reboot because its not available to anywhere near as many gamers as its predecessor. Selling a game to 95%+ of the gamers is obviously going to sell in higher numbers than making it available to less than 50%. Considering the 3 games above it multi-platform releases, therefore available to a much larger market share as well as being some of the biggest names in gaming - games even the reboot never outsold, 4th is quite respectable for its debut. It still outsold a lot of other big names this week.
@BAMozzy You don't reboot your franchise to sell significantly less with your sequel. Maybe the game will have great word of mouth and go on to do amazing things following its tepid launch, but...
You can look at the chart position all you like, but if the numbers that NeoGAF have crunched are accurate - and they appear to be to me - then they're not good. Will it be able to make up the deficit when it launches on PC and PS4? I'm not so sure.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is a great game so while I'm sure some moron fanboys will celebrate, it not selling well isn't a good thing. Still really annoyed at SE's decision. They rebooted a franchise just to kill it and I'm sure the company will find a way to kill Deus Ex as well. Its pre-order plan failed in spectacular fashion but there are other ways.
@JoeBlogs
Lowest rated main Halo game ever and the community is once again split on the direction 343 took with it. I'm surprised it wasn't one-and-done in the top 10. I like the game well enough but even as a huge fan of the series, I can see the problems with 5.
Damn, that's a shame about Tomb Raider. Hope it does better sales wise when it's brought to the PS4. That way Square Enix will be more inclined to publish a third
@get2sammyb I agree that the business decision to reduce your potential market that significantly doesn't make sense. I certainly cannot understand or agree with it but I can't change it either. I never agree with any 3rd Party exclusivity deals - even those that delay access to DLC content for any amount of time. I also doubt Street Fighter 5 will sell as many copies as 4 did either!
I doubt Uncharted 4 would have claimed top spot this week - I think it would have reached 3rd at best surpassing Fifa 16 (although I doubt it because its not available on last gen) but not outselling CoD and Fallout 4 this week. I know this is slightly different as its never been a multi-platform game, therefore hasn't had the same controversy and we all know the PS4 has a bigger player base than Xbox too. I also doubt, based on the reboot sales, that this Tomb Raider would have surpassed the top 2 this week if it had released across all platforms!
In terms of reviews though RotTR has done well and if its anything like its predecessor, it will be one of those games that 'grows'. After all the reboot itself didn't do as well as expected at launch and according to Crystal Dynamix, took nearly a year to be profitable.
The only reason I can see this 'failing' is because of that business decision but as far as the game itself is concerned, its certainly every bit as good and in a lot of ways better, than the reboot. It could be one of those games that sees a steady stream of sales in December and after Christmas after gamers have bought Fallout 4, CoD:BO3 etc.
Like I said, I really can't understand or agree with that decision, but I am not going to be bitter and twisted about it either. I admit I am in the position to take advantage of that and feel sorry for those PS gamers that can't. It doesn't detract from the game itself which is fantastic. If people want to shun this game because of that decision, that's up to them and its their decision to miss out on the best Tomb Raider game for many years - if not the best ever.
The best I can hope for is that Crystal Dynamix/Square Enix (or who ever it was that agreed to this decision) realises how poor that decision is and never makes another one like it but the game itself is a commercial success so I get to play subsequent sequels. I really don't want it to fail and this style of Tomb Raider to finish.
@adf86 it is not that bad to be honest as it only released on the Xbox consoles but it would never beat F4
Tomb Raider going for timed exclusivity killed the game's chances of success. Had it launched mid October on Ps4/XONE/PC I'm sure it would have done great.
@teatimed
Third aint happening unless Sony, MS or Nintendo steps up to the plate. MS won't do it again, the payoff is obviously not going to be there. That leaves Sony or Nintendo. Ideally SE would sell Crystal Dynamics and the franchise to a publishing company run by people who have more than 1 functioning brain cell. Hell, I hope SE sells all its Western IPs, this is the same damn company that announced Deus Ex: Mankind Divided to an extremely positive reaction and then undid it all with the most idiotic, and one of the most anti-consumer pre-order plans ever conceived. And I don't want to hear one person use the damn 'it's business' argument. I'm so sick of that one. No duh it's business and these companies are out to make money, doesn't mean you have to be stupid in going about things.
@JoeBlogs I'm a huge Halo fan, but the series has gone completely off track from what made it outstanding in the original 3 games and Halo Reach. Regardless of the good scores its not a game as many people look forward to anymore.

Judging by all the SW:B ads I saw yesterday - front page, back page, middles pages - that will do better on PS4 as well. That giant AT-AT pic is everywhere, but it's hard to find an Xbox One symbol anywhere.
Ehh, I think 4th is fine for an xbox exclusive right now. Other than Halo5 and Football Manager, everything else has a broad range of multiplatform support so not too bad.
The dust is going to take a long time to settle on Rise of the Tomb Raider. Timed exclusivity wasnt done for free, the other markets are kinda sorta important, and this game will get another advertising push in a year's time on PS4.
@get2sammyb neogaf thread pointed towards fallout 4 selling more on ps4 then both halo 5 and tomb raider combined. The mindshare is with Sony, square dropped it big time siding with MS on this one..
We can only hope trickling sales and a pick up for launches on PC and ps4 save the franchise as hopes for another tomb raider look slim indeed. And those who slammed you when you said tr would sell slow... Hmmm
@Gamer83 Im not having a party but i did sign a petition and well its kinda funny to say told you so. You can call everyone a fanboy but its Crystal who made the decision with Square-Enix and told us hey you get a download only game be happy with it. So it is funny to see it blow up in their faces, But at the same time i dont hope this will be the final nails in the coffin op Tombraider.
Well the decision everyone believed to be ridiculous and potentially damaging to the franchise just as it got back on its feet, is starting to bear fruit. I hope they enjoy the money they took in advance, SE is getting the reaction it deserves even if the game doesn't and it does look a good game, even if I doubt I'll buy it next year or at least not at full price. How about launching it as a PS+ game as way of apology?
As for the number 1 game, I have already spent way too much time with it and it truly is an amazing game. One which is going to take an extremely long time to discover all it has to offer
Rise of tomb raider deserves to sell well cos it's a good game according to reviews anyway. So Positively looking forward to GOTY edition on PS4 with all the trimmings next year. Thank you Microsoft for paying the initial cost in prep of a PS4 version
@Flaming_Kaiser
Did I call everyone a fanboy? No. I said 'some moron fanboys' and that's a true statement, there are going to be some clowns celebrating this, if that's not you then no reason to take offense to what I said.
I said from the start this was a bad idea and I take no pride and certainly find it funny to say I told you so. That is utterly pathetic, especially considering this is a great game. I'm a gamer first before I'm a PlayStation fan and I like to see good games do well. I don't want to hit the panic button just yet but if North American sales aren't significantly better, I'm going to assume this deal has effectively killed the franchise and the industry is not better off because of that.
@Gamer83 Maybe it's not the deal but a horrendous timeframe to release this game.. Fallout 4? Call of duty? You can spend money once
@Sanquine
You're right, the timing wasn't great but even if they released it at a different time cutting out the PS4 and PC is still not a smart decision. Especially since the numbers show the majority of the Tomb Raider fanbase is on PlayStation.
