As expected, the first batch of PlayStation 2 games will release on the PlayStation 4 tomorrow. We have a sneaking suspicion that this was intended as a PlayStation Experience 2015 announcement, but there have been way too many leaks over the past 24 hours for Sony to hold out. Let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first: your old PS2 discs and PS2 Classics purchases will not carry forward.
Eight games will be available starting tomorrow: Dark Cloud, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Rogue Galaxy, The Mark of Kri, Twisted Metal Black, and War of the Monsters. Each title will be enhanced with sharper presentation, full Trophy support, and Remote Play compatibility. The games will cost between $9.99 and $14.99 in North America, which is more than we were anticipating.
Additional titles will be added over time, with the likes of Fantavision, PaRappa the Rapper 2, and more all glimpsed in the trailer embedded below. "We hope that you love playing PS2 games on your PS4 as much as we did making them," Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida wrote on the PlayStation Blog. "So tell us, what PS2 games do you want to play on your PS4 [in the future]?"
PS2 Games Launching on PS4 from 5th December
- Dark Cloud - $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto III - $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - $14.99
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - $14.99
- Rogue Galaxy - $14.99
- The Mark of Kri - $14.99
- Twisted Metal: Black - $9.99
- War of the Monsters - $9.99

What a day! What a glorious day! Dark Cloud is back baby!
Fantavision! Yeah, baby!
I wonder if its the ps2 version of San Andreas or the mobile port
@SKC_Diamond 99.9% certain it'll be the PS2 version.
Yes Vice City and San Andreas! Too bad they are a bit pricey definitely have to pick them up down the line though...
@get2sammyb awesome the better version
people think sony are going to put these in as ps+ games witch would be awesome
I hope we get The Warriors eventually. I would 100% re-buy that!
I've got to be honest, I've had a hankering to play Twisted Metal Black for a while now. It still looks visually impressive in the trailer, too.
I can feel @ShogunRok throwing serious shade in my direction right now.
I already see three or four games in there that I wanna play! I'm pretty psyched about this! I never owned a PS2 myself, so there's some top quality stuff I missed out on. 😩
Though it's a little expensive I don't mind too much as I would only pick things up that I haven't played before. I still have a ps2 sitting under my TV so don't think I'd rebuy something I already own but who knows? 1080p and trophy support is gonna make things pretty tempting.
Wishful thinking, but I'm hoping that they have plans for Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
They should have these as the monthly freebies , to expensive for me though
@InsertNameHere I doubt anything's wishful thinking at this point. If Sony's done it properly, then it should be easy to get old games up on the store, assuming there are no licensing issues.
I'd like to see Godzilla: Save The Earth but that's probably not happening. I'm sure Resident Evil 4 will be added though.
Y'all shout loud enough about what you want and maybe you'll get it. Sony's openly asking what games people want so it sounds like they're open to all suggestions.
I remember people complaining about Nintendo charging $1-$2 for updated VC games on the Wii U VC.
Playstation 4 owners be like
to play previous generation games.
Consider Rogue Galaxy officially bought. One of my all time Favorites.
Hmm SONY never seem to wait to tell us their big News at their Shows it seems (they could of waited until erm tomorrows PSX) Cool stuff tho I want TimeSplitters 2 the most tho(but doubt it will be done) Oh well.
If the trophies are easy enough and come through natural progression rather than hunting Down guides again. I will rebuy vice city and san Andrea in a heart beat.
@Ryno Don't worry, there's plenty of complaining on other sites.
$15 seems a little steep. Id maybe buy at $5. I wonder if these will ever be ps+ releases. Rogue galaxy looks good. I missed that one during my ps2 days.
I don't mind the price too much - as long as it converts properly into GBP and is £6.99 to £9.99. People will say "Ha, but I can get [game name] from this place pre-owned for only £3!"
Well do that then. No one is stopping you. This is for convenience and immediacy. Besides which, I just checked for Dark Cloud on CEX and it's £15 ($23).
@Ryno I don't know about that. I do remember Nintendo charging £20 for old NES games on the GBA back in the early 2000s. That's £27 in today's money, or $40. So let that sink in - in my early 20s, within Iwata's leadership when the DS was very new, Nintendo was charging $40 for Donkey Kong ROMs.
I still have the feeling we will never see any Neversoft PS2 games.
@get2sammyb But the PS2 version didn't have trophies.
@Ryno Nice. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a difference in people's opinions on the price based on their desire to play these games?
OK, that was one sorry convoluted sentence. Let's try again.
I already own Rogue Galaxy and War of the Monsters and Mark of Kri, so I'm not paying to play them on a different system. But, I would recommend all 3 at those prices to somebody who hasn't played them but is interested in those types of games. So your VC upgrade charge comparison, while funny, is off. It's more like Nintendo charging get $20 for Wii games, or $10 for N64, or $15 for GameCube if they ever actually put them on tnere. Well Windwaker is there for $50 - 2 years later and it's still $50 - so this is a better deal than those. Twilight Princess HD looks almost exactly the same as the original but they will charge $50 for that 10 year old game as well.
So compared to WW HD and TP HD these games are actually a steal.
Sorry to throw logic on our fun zone.
Any thing on that list that is E to T rated
i have the ps2 version of gta san andreas do i have to pay again?
Has there been any word on ps1 games? I would love to play through The Legend of Dragoon with upscaled graphics and trophy support.
$14.99 is pretty terrible in my opinion. I expected these to generally be on the very cheap side - I mean, we are talking about games from two generations ago.
at the prices quoted I'll maybe hold off until they drop a little especially since the 2 I'm interested in GTAVC and GTASA both weren't in the video. Come to think of it none of the GTA's were shown. Last minute additions maybe.?.
Might also give Fantavision a whirl when the prices drop a little, it looks interesting. I don't recall that game first time around..
I'm craving black already. Though nowadays i might bet bored unless they converted mp to online? Can't see how or why they would do it, but if I could host a 4 player connection, I'd be pretty damn excited.
Can someone tell what Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy are like as JRPGs, how they play etc.
I would have been more impressed if these where also available for Vita and not just through remote play
Hot Shots Tennis, Ico, the Scooby Doo games, Pac-man Fever, Secret Agent Clank (the PS2 version), Silent Hill 2, Sphinx And The Cursed Mummy., Viewtiful Joe, Beyond Good And Evil, the Tak games, the Ty The Tasmanian Tiger games, Wild Arms 3, Grandia 2, Grandia 3, Shadowhearts, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, X-men Legends, Onimusha games and Dark Cloud 2 would be the ones that would make me happy...even if they re-re-released Jak And Daxter, the Sly Cooper series and the original Ratchet And Clanks...I'd really buy the Sonic and Super Monkey Ball games.
@TheIronChimp I think the main things I'd want to play again are the .hack games and then .hack//GU. The problem is that there's 4 games in the first series and 3 in the second and you need them all to go through the whole story. If they end up being £15 each, that's ridiculous. Hopefully, if they ever end up for sale, they'll be bundled at a sensible price and not £90 for the lot.
@adf86 I have to warn you, I haven't played either since they were relatively new.
Dark Cloud is a light and breezy dungeon crawler with town building mechanics and lots of crafting. Not really to the ridiculous degree you get in more recent games like Minecraft. You might catch a fish and then grill it, or combine several items to make a new item. It could possibly be compared to other crafting-focused JRPGs like the Atelier series, but it's very different in terms of tone and style. There's a pretty simply action, beat 'em up fighting style to it. It's more about progressing through areas and accumulating raw materials.
Rogue Galaxy is them taking that idea and trying to make a more epic, over-arching narrative with a wide cast of characters and locations. No town building, unless I've forgotten that (it's been a while) but still crafting and weapon customisation, things like that. There's a Star Wars tinge to the setting and characters. I guess, to compare them to two upcoming games, it's like if they made Dragon Quest Builders first and then went onto make Dragon Quest XI. Rogue Galaxy is them going cinematic, going for more story and character focus and more coherent world building.
Price is maybe a little bit expensive if sony convert it to £10-£15(which is usually the case, they most have their own exchange rate) but i personally would pay it especially for something like rogue galaxy...Actually if you look around for ps2 games here in uk some of them are around that price anyway, i suppose you could always buy a ps2 and get loads of games for less than 10-15 but you would also need to get an old tube tv too as original ps2 games would look horrible on a modern hd tv(i imsgine)...so £10-15 is maybe a tad expensive but not too bad when you consider what you are getting.
On a side note i noticed how the ps+ area on ps4 has been cleaned up to show just this months ps4 freebies, maybe they made some room to throw a couple of ps2 games in there..
I wouldn't mind a bit of Simpsons road rage for a bit of couch coop when my bro comes round
@gingerfrog I highly that will ever come due to the legal issues behind that game.
I'm curious why the eu prices haven't been released... Would be awesome if they could somehow add online, war of the monsters would over take my life!!!!
Not for me specially at this price, i think it doesn't have a reasonable price, i thought this would cost between 6 to 10 $ max for a 12 years old generation games.
Good chance for me to play rogue galaxy and dark cloud 😊
I guess I'm buying at least one GTA game this weekend, the prices should be a touch less but I'm excited none the less. Oh and Persona 4 please in HD 😃😃😃
Yaay $ony,overcharge for old games
They should give one away for free as a taster.
Any chance of SOTC appearing on the PS Store? I'd pay €10/15 for that game. I understand the the complaints, I don't really care about the updated resolution and trophy support, well, perhaps the resolution is neat, but as long as all the games do actually look better. One thing is sure, for that price, I won't be buying as many games as I thought I would when I first heard the rumours of PS1/PS2 classics on PS4.
@rjejr Rogue Galaxy always looked interesting, but never got the chance to play it. I'll guess I have to try it out now... I will definitely look up a couple of reviews.
Dark Cloud and Rouge Galaxy for sure, even though i own them on PS2
lmao £15 (or whatever it convert's to) no thank's, £5 and I may have picked up a couple or maybe a few. I'd take them as monthly freebie's I suppose but I would prefer the usual selection tbh.
@nanes99 yes, yes you do, AGAIN.
Yeah, not at £15 unless one comes along that I really want. £5-£10 is okay.
I just hope this won't be like the way the PS3 got PS2(&PS1) games i.e it taking YEARS for them to bring PS2/1 games to PSN & LOADS of real PS2/1 Classics never came to the PS3 in the end :-/ I hate waiting now I am getting to old to wait for things now Same with PS4 basic features I can't stand waiting for basic features now. PLEASE SONY when you bring out the PS5 let it have all the features of the PS4 ready on day 1. And make it play all PSN games to because it gets boring every Gen having to wait for this stuff. Anyway I am still happy that we are going to get PS2 Classics on the PS4 It's better than nothing I suppose.
Will definitely be downloading Vice City.
The pricing does seem a little bit steep. Regardless, Rogue Galaxy is a lovely game and I would recommend it fully to anyone who hasn't had the opportunity to play it!
Hopefully there will eventually be a comprehensive offering of games. The PS2 is such an amazing system Sony should preserve its legacy as much as possible.
@Ryno Well i never played Rogue Galaxy and i looks kinda great so i think i made a good deal here.
War of the Monsters? YES!! Now I can finally play the best monster fighting game of all time (should have taken notes from this game, Banco)!! Though, if they add online multiplayer, It'll make me the happiest man alive (probably)! Now, please Sony, add Shadow of Rome, King's Field 4, Armored Core 2, Spiderman 2, The Thing and Bully for the PS4.
sony shame that this news is a lack of respect for players returning us to pay for games that already left more than 6.8 and 10 years.
Language -Tasuki-
@Matroska OK many thanks mate, sound like pretty cool games.
I need Haunting Ground and the Clocktower Series but i rather have them fully remasterd on disk but this can work 2.
Might pick up San Andreas
Dark Cloud and Twisted Metal are the only two with reasonable prices. You can get any PS2 GTA for $5 at a second hand games store.
@Neolit you hit the nail on the head. Sony's like, "screw the fans who held onto and took care of their discs. Let's make them pay for it again!" Wii U and XBOX One got it right.
@NESguy94 Yes but did they add trophy support and other things? No they didn't. Wii U and Xbox just went 1 gen back Sony went two so it's a bit different.
@Tasuki
Good point, but as long as you already have a the game its free on Xbox and Wii U. I think PS2 and PS3 emulation are totally possible on PS4 but Sony is just trying to sell more PS3s and re-sell the PS2 games.
@SoulsBourne128 Yes! Still waiting on a sequel/remake of War of the Monsters. Its been over decade but I'm sure they will if it sells well now.
