Capcom's gone ahead and spilled a load of details regarding Street FIghter V's story mode ahead of the brawler's release next month. For the most part, things sound pretty standard: each playable character will sport their own storyline, complete with great looking illustrations from Japanese artist Bengus. These 'Character Stories' will flesh out individual backgrounds, and in some cases, they'll describe what's been happening during the absence of particular characters - we're looking at you, Charlie Nash.
However, a story expansion will be shaking up this somewhat typical formula. Due to launch in June, the 'Cinematic Story Expansion' will detail the events that occurred between Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter III, and as its name suggests, this'll be a cinematic download, with pre-rendered cutscenes telling the tale. What's more, the expansion won't cost you a penny.
So, have you ever really cared about the story in Street Fighter? Seek answers that only your fists can give you in the comments section below.

Good I love the banter between the characters and with the superb English voices it will be grand to experience the story with these personalities. I can not wait for the DLC characters to launch and this shortly after!
Weird that it's going to be a post-release thing, but sounds pretty cool. Glad to hear they're taking a few leafs out of Mortal Kombat's playbook.
@get2sammyb
It's good to hear, but it's also a bad sign as well. Knowing Capcom, this isn't going to be cheap. If this expansion is separate from the DLC characters, I'll be pissed.........I know you can earn them, but any dumb bloke should already guess it's going to be a ridiculous amount of playing hours.
How about this Capcom, delay the game till June and throw in the story content and a new character or two.
@sub12 "What's more, the expansion won't cost you a penny."
@get2sammyb
Ohh yeah, I saw that..... .... ... .. .
@sub12 I suppose it's possible it could cost "Fight Money" or whatever they're calling it, but I think they would have had to make that clearer. The PS Blog article literally states it's a free content update, so I think it's free.
Yes, pretty impressive to hear we are getting both this and the DLC characters for free. Guess Capcom is learning from all that negative feedback.
@sinalefa
This is still Capcom though!! Stop taking the free fighters thing at face value.......I have a feeling that unless SFV is a game you dump hours and hours into every week.......forget about it being free. If this was a CD Projekt Red fighting game, ok, I would believe you.........and although I love Capcom, let's be real here.
@sub12
Most probably this content and the fighters will be included in Super Street Fighter V, which will be like $40 compared to $60 for the Vanilla edition.
Anyway, later we will know if unlocking them is going to be a grind so they compel you to pay instead.
Sounds cool, and it's free. Nice
This thing by itself is great, but for free it's amazing!
Any idea if it's possible to get all the pre-order costumes in the UK?
GAME has Ryu and PSN has Chun-Li but I can't find anywhere offering Cammy. Amazon you'd think would have Bison like the US but the product page doesn't mention it...
So I take it this game takes place after Street Fighter III. Ok then Capcom.
@stocko I can't wait to play as Alex again, loved using him in SF 3
@sinalefa There isn't going to be a Super Street Fighter V version, this version is going to be the only one.
@adf86
I remember when Ono said IV Arcade Edition would be the last version of IV, so I don't believe them.
@sinalefa That was when they were doing there bad practice's. I think Sony was a major influence in the decision to have one version they use FP to unlock characters or you can pay for they alternatively. It is possible don't get me wrong, but I feel there will be an uproar as they stated you only need one copy.
I believe they'll stick to the "no Super" thing. Moreso because of this, in the trailer.
(I hope I got the markup right...)
@adf86 Hard to believe this either... hope they prove me wrong..
Bengus' illustrations looks airight but I would've preferred someone else like Akiman to be doing the illustrated cutscenes to be honest.
@whywai88 If I'm wrong then I'll hold my hands up but it's worth bearing in mind that Sony will more then likely have a say in matter.
@adf86 I hope my boy Cody is in the next DLC!
@stocko That's the guy from Final Fight right? I'm hoping for Blanka, was always my favourite.
@adf86 Yeah he was my favourite in Alpha 3 and SFIV! I do hope we get the choice via polls. I would think Blanka would sinces it's Ono's favourite (remember the mini Blanka he brings with him?)
@stocko How can I forget, it never leaves his side
well since we're on the topic of what character we want in as future dlc then i have to go with my main Makoto. im gonna reeeeally miss her otherwise. after her i want sakura. almost more than nything i just want brand new characters. but not stupid waste of a slot joke characters ie rufus/furte etc.
Only fighting games that have a story I can enjoy are MK 9 and MK X. And even those are absurd, but they're pretty well done and serve as a nice distraction. All I ask from SF V is that the gameplay remains stellar. That's all I ever want from this series.
The Alpha series had a large story focus and was very enjoyable as a result. There was also that RPG-ish mode in Alpha 3 where you levelled up your character and customised them in more detail than many action RPGs allow you to. It'd be cool if they'd do something like that again.
@AyanamiReign Pre-order costumes always come out as normal DLC later, with very few exceptions.
