PlayStation 4 firmware update v3.50 launched this week and it's pretty good. Among the oft-requested features, the all-new system software includes the ability to appear offline and enable online friend notifications – as well use Remote Play on a PC and Mac. It's a decent upgrade with tons of more subtle features like a much needed redesign to the way that messages display – but given how long we've been waiting for the refresh, it's hard not to feel a little disappointed at the lack of real headline additions. Consequently, we've compiled three big features that we reckon would make the PS4 better overnight.
Folders, FFS
This one's unbelievably obvious, making it even more baffling that we're even asking for it. Folders would, in theory, allow you to group together multiple games or apps under a single icon, making the user interface instantly less cluttered. The fact that the TV & Video section on the console already demonstrates how this would work makes its absence all the more galling to be honest. Surely the next major PS4 update has to include this oft-requested feature…
External hard drive support
Kudos to the PS4: it's really easy to upgrade your internal hard drive – but you have to increase the profile of the platform in order to get more than 2TB of space, and not everyone wants to go through the rigmarole of opening their console up. External hard drive support would solve this problem in a flash, and the fact that the feature's offered by both of Sony's competitors means that there's no excuse not to include the option here. Sort it out.
Let's tidy up that Library
We love the PS4's Library, we really do – but sometimes it can be a real mess. Look, there should always be an option to see every single digital item that you own, but it shouldn't necessarily be the default one. The fact that we have to browse beyond the Destiny Alpha – a limited time demo from 2014 – suggests that Sony's in serious need of adding some filtering functions to this otherwise useful utility. If we could only hide or delete items, then this feature would be way better in an instant – but we wouldn't mind some searching tools, too.
Some quick and dirty suggestions for Sony's firmware team there, then – but do you agree? Is there something major missing from our list, or do you think that we're bang on? Firm up your firmware suggestions in the comments section below.

Folders. Folders. Folders.
@AyeHaley FOLLLLLLLLLLDERS!
Funny everytime I've asked in forums that Sony needs to implement External HDD support my Opinion gets shot down , it is by far the most important next feature Sony needs to add on the PS4
Game files are getting bigger and bigger and even installing a 10TB on the PS4 ( Which I clearly think it doesn't support it ) it as pure hassle because once that fills up you have to remove and replace with another one
External HDD is Plug and Play simple as that nothing beats that
Idk, I do like they the way TV Folder is on the PS4 but I also like having my games just there on my home screen ready to select.
I'd prefer something like Xbox's were you can pin games and apps to the home screen in the order you like.
But yeah, the home screen does need a bit of an overhaul.
Folders would be great. I still hold out hope that I will be able to change my name and keep my trophies.
@get2sammyb under External HDD you've put 2GB when you definitely meant 2TB!
@benrawr LOL. Thanks. Imagine if PS4 only had room for 2GB!
Great ideas
1.all above
2.PSone classics games(cross buy ps3,PS vita)(cross play with vita)
Folders!! And sorting options for downloaded games. I never got why I could not sort them alphabetically.
Hiding items and searching the library would be good also. As for me I would also want to be able to buy Vita games and transfer them to my portable device but it surely won't happen.
@itshoggie I reckon they should add pinning as well. That's a good shout!
I have always wanted to use my screenshots as a background. That would be really nice. I know Sony has no incentive to do that, since it would lose some theme sales, but I can always hope.
@Gamingfinest Quite right, mate.
External hard drive support...
@Elodin I'd love that too, probably the thing I want to see the most on PS4.
To be clear, the WiiU external hard drive support isn't a feature, it's a friggin necessity. Whatever brainiac at nintendo that it would be awesome to put a MASSIVE 32GB on their console is hopefully unemployed.
@Napples I absolutely agree that 32GB is way too small, but Nintendo's small amount of storage is more excusable than Sony's lack of external hard drive support, mainly because the Wii U doesn't install games to its hard drive like the PS4 and Xbox One do. As long as you buy physical games, you'd never run out of storage space (and if you only bought digital games, you'd get an external hard drive anyway even if the Wii U shipped with 500GB).
Are people seriously thinking that folders is more important or should be added before external HD support? Folders? Sure it would be nice to organize the home screen a little beyond what it already is but I honestly have never run into a problem where I thought "man, folders would really help this situation". I have upgraded my HD and I STILL need external support. Get it done!
I tried putting in a 2TB into my PS4 once, and the only one available was a Seagate. I tried it and it was absolute trash, so I went back to the 1TB I had in it. They really need to implement external HDD support soon.
@TomKnows Aww Ty tom =)
I think Sony is worried about having the console hacked, which is why they refuse to provide external hard drive support. I believe that was how they originally exploited the PS3.
Any added customizing would be welcome like the options to have the trophy list in alphabetical order, the library to display only what is on the hard drive, and to be able to chose what is displayed on the home page.
Big stuff needed is external drive support even if just for storage that allows individual game transfers to the internal drive for game play. Seperate files for game data and dlc/patches like some ps3 games provided.
Really huge big stuff: zooming while using the browser like the ps3 does.
@Majic12 Well, folders would be useful immediately; external drive support would only be useful after spending $50+.
I've decided not to replace my PS4 until there is External HDD support. I'm just going to rock Vita for now lol
Having had my ps4 since launch I know an external hhd is the option I want most. The fact I have to delete whole games off, and if I fancy a 1 off multilayer game on an old game I have to not only reinstall the game but download all the patches and dlc again is mind numbing.
I just picked up an Xbox one and they do all these things on there. You can "pin" the games/apps that you use the most to your home screen. And you can view the full library of games or apps or both.
folders are not that important but external hard is something useful
I need improved media player compatibility!! Showtime on my old PS3 plays any file you throw at it. Crappy PS4 plays bout 60% of my vids.
Just give me folders, librabry clean up, and more trophies settings. I have 500 gb with tons of indies plus 17 games i just uninstall the games i don't play. If have 3 full games plus some indies i'm good. Can't play more then 1 game al a time anyway.
For me, External HDD support is the ONLY upgrade I want and NEED! All the others have minimal effect to me and my gaming. Having folders may make it very slightly easier to access my games but not having an External HDD causes far more issues - trying to decide which games to delete, installing the game you want to play, waiting for that to fully install (in some cases to play certain parts), install the updates etc.
I know you can replace the internal HDD up to 2TB and its relatively easy, A case of sliding the case off, unscrewing and removing the old HDD, fixing in the new up to 2TB drive in, downloading the OS software to USB and installing that. You can use an external HDD to move all your games etc over to an external HDD and move them back to the new one too...
Compared to just plugging in an External HDD and increasing your Storage up to I think 8TB is the current biggest I have seen (as well as keeping the internal) which also costs less per TB than a new internal, its no contest! It also means that you could have basically unlimited storage. If one gets full just buy a new one and plug that in. If you want to play an older game that's on a different External, just swap externals over! So much easier than deleting and reinstalling or redownloading games.
@SanderEvers Yep sure can, easily, already did that to. Doesn't change the fact that I STILL need external HD support. It feels up rather quickly, especially if you download the plus freebies every month and play new games fairly regularly. External HD support is the only problem I have with my ps4, and is made worse by the fact that both X1 and WiiU allow it.
@nomnom I agree
If any more changes come to the firmware then thats fine but for me I do not need any more additions to it.
Favourites/pins like on Xbox pls. Name change pls! I don't even mind paying.
Yeah external HDD is the one I want most
External HDD support would be ace. I just don't want to fiddle under the hood to improve my memory and I like to keep old games available in case the mood ever hits me to replay it or try and get more trophies.
Plus, I want to change my lame PSN name. I rue the choices I made there.
yeah all 3 of them sound good, especially external HDD support because the way it's going with installs now-a-days, the game, DLC and updates not even a 2TB HDD will be big enough
Offline trophy viewing and folders.
i'd prefer to be able to get rid of all the forced icons Sony want me to buy into (Spotify etc) from the menu. they did the same on PS3 with Singstar and it drove me bananas!
I can't agree more, it's an absolute joke how bad the library is. It's bad enough we've had to request it be fixed, but the PS4 has been out for over 2 years and still nothings been done while they give us features that not everyone benefits from.
Offline trophy support, and removal of the cloudy bar at the bottom of the screen telling you to connect if you have clicked not to connect to the internet. So annoying.
Personaly I think it would be nice to remove the 9 item's Sony seem to think we need on our dashboard like PSnow/capture gallery and the playroom etc that I never use and that cannot be removed (unless I missed something).
@get2sammyb library filtering would be my most requested behind name change support. Surely you remember when you couldn't stream trailers and had to "but" and download them? Looking at my video library is an absolute mess and something that's just so unpleasant to look at. Sure I just change view to most recent purchase, but I would love to either have a separate trailer folder, or remove anything from my library that was either trailer or demo. Demos now are not that huge of a deal, but alpha/betas are littering my library as well. Its hilarious though to see which movies I had downloaded trailers for almost 10 years ago I will say that.
@Gamingfinest
Yes, I've been saying for ages, external harddrive support in this gen is a must and frankly it should've been there from day one. It's beyond stupid that Sony hasn't put this in yet but when you have fanboys kissing your a$$ at every turn I guess the people who run these companies don't feel the need to do anything.
FOLDERS AND LIBRARY CLEANING
AND OFFLINE TROPHY VIEWING
@Majic12 @SanderEvers same with me. 2TB is full 98% of the time. It's still a big issue for people that buy a lot of games.
@Gamingfinest Once that fills up? Seriously? Assuming you got that 10 TB you mention (which do not yet exist, but will in the future) and all AAA games were 60 GB (most sit around 30-40 GB) you could still hold 170 games on that HDD. Are you trying to say that 170 games installed at the same time is not enough?
I have said this quite a few times, but keep in mind the average gamer has 10 games over the life of a console (not usually all at once either), the current limit of 2 TB HDD is overkill. So making a feature thats only really useful to a select (but vocal) minority, is not the best use of their time.
Folders on the other hand, and library organization are two of my top three, with the final one being the ability to delete trophies. Give me that one, and I don't care what you do with drives. I would live with a 500 GB HDD for the life of the PS4 if it meant I could delete trophies!
Isn't USB transfer rates slower than HDD? Wouldn't this potentially slow your game frame rates? Just a couple questions I'm not sure about.
@thedevilsjester And yet again that's your opinion and stays yours period If you think that External HDD is not needed you are clearly delusional and should stop trying to damage control why it's not needed ( Because you don't needed that's your problem not mine)
If Sony doesn't ever implement it they are fools as so are you for asking delete trophies ( useless feature) Library organization ( is ok) and Folders keep waiting (not Sony priorities )
@Gamer83 They listen to the Damage controlling Fanboys and failed badly on adding support for External HDD ( most important thing ever )
It's just like this feature and the rest they might put them on hold for #PS4 #4K as their focus might shift to that and maybe add External HDD support on that instead ( I think that but can be wrong )
Sad thought I don't mind Folder(support) but deleting trophies is a joke it's already available ( didn't unlock any you can delete the game of you PSN gamercard )
It is what it is Very sad to see some feature that are useless like Daily Motion broadcasting what the heck the Point of that ? when you Have Youtube and Twitch (go figure

@thedevilsjester Lmfao you are asking for Delete trophies now if you didn't unlock any for that game (you can clearly delete that game of your list if you have zero Trophies unlocked )
Now if you already have unlocked any that's your problem as you won't be ever be able to delete it then
As for asking to get something where you can delete them ( the game with those trophies unlocked )never going to happen keep waiting !!!
@Majic12 I don't mind folders but my main gripe is no External HardDrive support is a Fail on Sony part and listening to the wrong people
Seriously ridiculous that it hasn't been implemented yet and they keep adding Broadcasting places like Daily motion pointless ( As Youtube and Twitch and Ustream already available )
I really don't get them sometimes
@Gamingfinest not sure how not wanting to clutter my trophy list with hundreds of game entries that are only partially complete is stupid, but seeing as how you couldnt reply to a simple opinon on the internet without resorting to insults, definitely frames your personality as someone that is nlt interested im having an intelligent discussion.
What I stated was simple fact, most gamers buy 10 games over the life of a console, the 500 GB default HDD will be more than enough for the vast majority, and a 2 TB upgrade will do for the rest, with a very very small outlier group that needs more than that, and no company should make changes based on what a few vocal people want (I am included in this with my trophy request, so I dont actually expect it to happen, nor do I claim Sony is stupid for not doing it or someone else is stupid for not wanting it)
@Gamingfinest From what I have read, and I am far from an expert on this topic, Sony hasn't allowed the external HD support yet because of fears over hacking plus members accounts. Exactly like what happened with the ps3. Apparently it is easier to get your hacking software on the console with an external HD? I'm not really sure, but that is the excuse floated across the internet.
@Majic12 Yes, I'm afraid I am seriously thinking that folders is more important and should be added before external HD support. I don't need to connect an external hard drive but I would like to tidy up my home screen. Shock news coming (brace yourself) - not everyone shares your priorities! Quick, sit down and I'll bring you a cuppa to soften the blow
@professorhat Here is the thing though, Noone NEEDS to tidy up the home screen, as you say. People want to, because organization. However, there are many people that legitimately NEED an external HD because there internal HD is full and has been full. They NEED it so they don't have to delete games or open their ps4 up and attempt a HD swap. Folders are a luxury item, that many want, but no one needs. Just my opinion.
But I don't NEED an external hard drive. At all. I have plenty of space on my 2Tb internal drive. I would LIKE to tidy up my home screen though. Did you get my note about people having different priorities from yourself? It's crucial to understanding other people's opinions
For me external HD would be awesome as well as folders/pinning and ability to delete/hide games from the library..
Suggestion if they are going to keep refusing external HD support atleast allow direct transfer of the existing HD to the new HD not via 3rd HD.
