Unlike most other retro brands, Pac-Man has actually improved with age. The outstanding Pac-Man Championship Edition DX was arguably one of the greatest games released on the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3, and Pac-Man Battle Royale – the four-player competitive spin on the iconic series – is right up there with the best that the franchise has had to offer, too.
Credit must go to Pac-Man 256 as well, which is chomping its way to the PlayStation 4 soon. The mobile-based spin-off – developed by the atrociously named Australian outfit Hipster Whale – offers a Crossy Road-inspired spin on the arcade classic, fusing endless running with non-stop munching. The title was free on smartphones, so it's unclear which model Bandai Namco will adopt on consoles.
The publisher's yet to officially confirm the game for Sony's new-gen system, but it has popped up on a Taiwan ratings board, which is usually all of the evidence needed. If you're not sure what to expect from this title, then check out the trailer embedded below, and feel the hype course through you like a Power Pellet.

Salamander is out today lads!
@get2sammyb
You forgot to mention all of the SNK news in the last day or two, granted, Pac-Man 256 is important as well.
On Metacritic - Crossy Road has averaged 88%
That's flaming experts reviewing this crap??? Im glad I stick with pushsquare the rest of the world are mad.
what about a remake of the arcade classic PacLand. Now that would be a pacman I'll happily spend cash on. Obviously I'd like the original soundtrack to return for it also.
@themcnoisy to be fair, it's a game that works well on mobile phones and they've actually put some effort into the presentation and such - it's also ridiculously addictive. Given that you generally play a smartphone game to pass 5 minutes when there's nothing else available, I can see why it'd be so well-received.
That said, I'm not overly sure I'd want Pac-Man 256 or Crossy Road on a console - they're not the kinds of games I want to sit down and play for hours on my lovely big-screen TV, and I don't think I'm alone in those regards.
That said, I'll probably buy it anyway, because I do like to support the developer, and I'd hope a "premium" console version would eliminate the need for ads and microtransactions in the smartphone version.
Why is there a pic of a blocky, yellow penis and b##ls?!!
This is a pretty fun game, though I'm not sure if it's really suited for a console.
I'd love a Vita version though.
Most Pac-Man games I have played have been terrible. 3D platformers that not only were poorly designed platformers, but had little to nothing that made it a pac man game other than the fact that it stars some pac man (with arms and legs) character. I would say based on my experience, Pac Man has not gotten better. I would still rather play the classic than any of the crap I have played since.
This game, on the otherhand, looks pretty fun.
@thedevilsjester Pacman Championship Edition is brilliant. DX took that good base and expanded it.
Go and play them. You will 100% change your mind.
@ApostateMage
I'm glad I'm not the only one who initially saw that
@somotodsyo I do too.More vita games
@thedevilsjester Yup, like @themcnoisy said, play Championship Edition and Battle Royale and you'll be back on board. There have been some stinkers along the way, but I think they've done a pretty good job keeping this ancient franchise alive.
Pac man championship edition dx is such a fun game, completely restored my faith in pac man that I had from playing the classic games 😊
@get2sammyb @themcnoisy The only non 'arcade-classic' Pac Man games I have played since, well, Pac Man, have been attempts at shoe horning them into another type of game, like Pac Man Ghostly Adventures. I generally avoid digital only titles, so this might explain why I haven't played Pacman Championship Edition, since it doesn't appear that it had a retail release on the PS3/PS4.
