Team ICO's talking a big game with The Last Guardian, and you'd be brave to doubt whether the ragtag group can deliver. The PlayStation 4 exclusive's director, Fumito Ueda, did craft two of the greatest titles ever made, after all: ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. And speaking in the latest issue of EDGE, the auteur explained how the boy and cat-bird from his upcoming adventure will interact.
"This creature isn't like the cute pets that exist in other games, or an ally that's really useful," he said. "The role of the creature is ambiguous; that's something that we wanted to express in the game, and it doesn't always do what you ask it to do. That's one of the themes of The Last Guardian. It's something that's difficult, and completely different." Be still our beating heart.
Ueda added that this all means that the artificial intelligence code is incredibly complex. "We've given this creature its own desires, so depending on what action it wants to take, that affects everything, including its animation. It's not like a normal humanoid character." The greatest game ever will deploy later this year, according to the veteran. It's almost here, readers – it's almost here!

If it isn't the greatest game ever I'll be extremely disappointed
I can't wait to play this Sony does not create the hype that is up to the fans.
"and completely different"
I don't know, I'm starting to get a Papa & Yo vibe. Not entirely, that creature was scripted, but TLG doesn't seem as new now as it did 6 years ago. Though I guess Papa & Yo was an Ico like game if you want to argue who's copying whom.
I really hope this is done well. It could make or break the game.
This one game I will admit I am proper hyped for! And I know I at least won't be dissapointed because they have never made a bad game
ICO and SoTC are hard acts to follow up, but I am incredibly excited to see how this turns out. It'll either blow up in their faces or be one of the most stunning games on the system.
it's more like a goat-bird isn't it?
I'm not sure whether that'll be too frustrating
I hope I can meld it to be evil, just like the ol' days with Wonder Project J's little dog-kicking robot guy.
If this is true and the Catbird is super interesting then I might be re-stoked about this. That said, I was VERY disappointed in what I saw last year at E3. It just looked like Ico, both in gameplay and graphics. I'm so tired of games that look like last gen or even last-last gen. I am a graphics whore, yes, but this game has been in development forever, I hope there is at least SOMETHING visually new to look at.
Ive always been underwhelmed when devs tout their incredible AI in games. Alien was great (like, really great) but the alien didn't behave as remarkably as they claimed it would, in my opinion.
"Be still our beating heart."
My thoughts exactly. My hype has not dipped in 7 years and I almost can't handle it.
I'm one of the tiny few that hasn't plaued ICO or SoTC so I'm hoping a PS4 remaster is on the cards. I am hyped for this though based on that E3 trailer.
@blakey78 I haven't either. Avoided Ico because.. what is it exactly? And Shadow has that niiice....loooooonnngggg....expanse of nothing between the supposedly great fights which is a turn off for me.
As for the catbirdrolexremastered thingy not always listening...ya best hope that doesn't result in an area bring unbeatable because the game feels like it god dammit.
I am like that creature then, Sony. I am not hyped for this and I doubt I will get it, the opposite of your wishes.
Team Ico's games never did it for me so I dont think this will either.
I read an article somewhere that there was one main culprit as to why this didn't release on the ps3. The ps3 itself. The article claimed that even though the ps3 was proper powerful for its time, coding the AI within the cell architecture was exceedingly difficult. Ueda, being the artistic bloke he is, would never comprise on his vision for the game, thus creating a massive delay until the ps4 came through the pipeline.
Can you imagine ANY other developer being allowed that kind of freedom to simply not comprise on what they want with their project? All this tells me that Sony knows Ueda San is onto something great with the Last Guardian and because of his resounding success with the other two titles they allowed him to skip an ENTIRE generation to produce the type of game he really wanted.
I am expecting absolute greatness, and based on the track record I don't think we will be dissapointed. Color me hyped.
I wouldn't be surprised if the AI gets savaged by critics because we've been accustomed to just pressing a button and expecting something to happen. Where's this game's intention was always to have Trico to act like a real animal and of course as we know animals don't always obey your commands.
@BLPs Ico is an incredible game, watch some Youtube videos if you aren't sure what it's like! And Shadow of the Colossus doesn't have any "nothing" moments lol, the pacing is great. If you played these games you would understand there is zero chance of unbeatable parts in TLG, as they are arguably the most flawlessly crafted games ever in terms of mechanics, progressing etc.
@PorllM I keep seeing Ico but everyone I ask is unsure of what it even is. Which is odd. And I'm familiar with Shadow I just...something stops me going into it. Might be hype. That leaves me disappointed usually
Been waiting for this for an eternity!!! However I just know that I'll end up getting attached to that furry bird/cat thing and it'll die at the end... QQ
@JoeBlogs
Well I am excited for KOFXIV but the staff here keeps ignoring it
Can't wait for this... It's plausible enough for Sony on not cancelling this title after so long...
