No Man's Sky has received an enormous patch named the Foundation Update, which incorporates the ability to build bases. Unfortunately, like so much of Hello Games' divisive hit, it's not immediately obvious what you have to do to create your own intergalactic home. But we come with tips.
Basically, you're going to want to fly around in your ship, scanning until you get a waypoint for a Habitable Base. Once you ping one, fly to it, and interact with the computer inside. You'll be given the option to set it as your base, from which point onwards you'll be able to upgrade it in whichever way you see fit.

But what do they add to the game? I'll try at some point, but too many other distractions at the moment!

Survival mode is good..pretty stressful though.
Read the latest article, then found the video further down! But thanks - looks impressive!
I tested the patch.
The graphics on the PS4 (classic) are hugely updated, with very neat motion blur and antialiasing. The starships look like little shiny toys now and everything is more polished. This game looks really good!
Also found more interesting planets with canyons I hadn't seen before, but due to the procedural generation of this title I'll need more wandering around to confirm that planets got more interesting.
@jackrov can you build bases in normal mode an use your current save?
I think in this case you have to go for freighters
I'm so close to the platinum trophy that I'm looking for an excuse to get back into No Man's Sky, but unless an update comes out that opens a wormhole to the centre of the galaxy so I don't have to spend another twenty hours warping over and over again, I don't think I'll bother.
It may just tempt me back to the game.
@johncalmc You don't need to get to the centre to earn the platinum trophy.
@CD456 You don't? Well that's lovely news. If I can ever be bothered to walk around planets scanning for life for hours then I'll go back in for the gong.
