There had been murmurs that For Honor, the swashbuckler from Ubisoft, would require an Internet connection in order to run on the PlayStation 4 – and they've since been confirmed. Writing on the game's forum, a community manager explained that the game is an "always online experience" with elements of progression "stored online". This spans the single player component, apparently.
Hmmm. While this is undoubtedly going to frustrate, it seems like par for the course with the French publisher these days, as it attempts to shoehorn service-like business models into all of its outings. Has this prompted you to sheath your interest in the title? Raise a sword or two in the comments section below.

Servers are probably be a disaster day one so ill wait until they sort that out before buying
Pre order cancelled. Ubisoft track record for online is abysmal
No thanks. I learned my lesson with the division.
2016 has not be a good year for Ubisoft. The Division was underwhelming, Watch_Dogs 2 sells were lower than the first, the silent launch of STEEP, and now this. Is Ubisoft trying to sabotage itself?
I think the hostile takeover from Vivendi and the investigation over the inside trading are signs that something in Ubisoft is not right.
Nah being forced to be online is a big NO for me.
I'm out for this as well. Online only annoys me, especially in SP campaigns.
I am wondering why Ubisoft are determined to shoehorn it in... it just doesn't sound like it adds anything for the gamer.
It wasn't on my Radar to begin with. The game looks great visually but the game-play looks quite repetitive and not the style I would normally play. I don't have an issue with online only games if they appear to justifiably require that. MP only games are obvious but even Destiny where virtually all areas are 'social' spaces - even when playing Solo makes sense but I struggle to see why this would need to be 'always online'
Need online connection for single player game is a big NO for me.
I've known that this game wasn't for me since about four seconds into the very first trailer for it, so all this did was add another log to the bonfire.
We all now how this one is going to play out, best of waiting a month or two after release,
I was very intrigued and now I will never purchase it.
I'm not really all that interested in this, but the online only thing doesn't really bug me much.
I have an app on my phone that keeps track of the games on my wishlist. As soon as this game was announced, it went on that list. I knew it was being geared toward on online experience, and living in the country of the US, internet is not a thing we can rely on. Nevertheless it went on the wish list because it had an offline single player campaign and that campaign could be played co-op splitscreen. Since adding this game to the wishlist they have cut the split screen co-op and now this... Removing from my wish list in 3...2...1... gone.
They blew it
Expected game to be multiplayer only and don't actually know why they bother with single player content, so that's perfectly fine in my list for a MP heavy game to require connection
I played a bit of the beta, great looking game right up there with The Division in terms of graphical quality but the gameplay just didn't gel with me so it wasn't on my list anyway. I'm not sure Online Connection Required is a make or break issue for me personally being a big Elder Scrolls Online player, but obviously the less hurdles there are to actually getting a game running the better it is for gamers.
Poor news.
I think I'm going to start selling any game that has always online for SP as I don't want to be not be able to play it one day when the servers are shut off...
Way to go Ubisoft...ya blew it. I'm not interested in a online only experience, if I wanted that I would buy a PC. Now if you go ahead and slap on a delay, (which you may as well since it probably wont sell that well anyways,) and add splitscreen and do away with this online only nonsense, you may have some moneys o mine.
When a game has single player as its secondary component I avoid it anyway. Don't play online multiplayer games & have not renewed my PSN membership. Ubisoft's 'AAA' games are always something to be avoided also. They've become the new EA!
Wow, Ubisoft in intent on losing as much money from potential consumers as possible.
"I've got an idea, let's make yet another single player mode force online to alienate consumers all around the world"
"Brilliant! Do it"
@Dodoo "I think I'm going to start selling any game that has always online for SP as I don't want to be not be able to play it one day when the servers are shut off..."
I'm panicking some of the ps4 online only games I currently own will be switched off sooner than that, when ubisoft and capcom go out of business.
@themcnoisy ebay's your friend!
@Neolit On PC gamespy closed down and with it loads of online only games too. There is a president for the hosting by other companies and / or mods for games but loads of legacy Nintendo and EA stuff has been shut off for good and they are 2 of the biggest players in the market. I'm not fussed either way tbh as I would have finished and traded well before this happens.
Sigh. Well I am no longer getting this game. Pre order canceled. Between this and steep (which I was also looking forward to) Ubisoft is heading to dev blacklist in my house. Beyond Good and Evil 2 is my last hope.
What gets me is this wasn't what they said originally. “We built the campaign so that if you bought the game just for that, that you would be satisfied even if you never went online and played multiplayer,” “It’s intended to be a full experience.”
