The wait for The Last Guardian is almost over. Alongside Final Fantasy XV, which launched just a few days ago after a decade or so in development, the successor to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus is one of the few PlayStation titles that we've been covering for what feels like an eternity. We suppose that any game with such a long history is going to attract some attention, but we've always been under the impression that, like its predecessors, The Last Guardian isn't going to set the sales charts alight.

Sony, however, seems to have healthy expectations for Fumito Ueda's latest creation. Speaking to MCV, product manager Joe Palmer reveals that pre-orders for the upcoming release are "exceeding expectations". Palmer continues: "We've seen a really positive response to the Collector's Edition in particular, which despite its higher price point proves there's a huge appetite for the game."

Palmer then goes on to explain Sony's marketing strategy behind the game, leading to a particularly intriguing quote: "We've tried to avoid fuelling the hype by playing on the fact that people have been waiting a long time for this. We want people to be excited because the game looks incredible, not because of its complicated development story."

Needless to say, it's going to be interesting to see how well The Last Guardian performs in terms of sales. We can definitely see it benefiting from releasing after the October and November rush, but how do you think it'll do? Do you have high hopes or are we looking at a niche title through and through? Ponder in the comments section below.
