Sony has uploaded an ANTHEM trailer to its YouTube channel featuring the same gameplay footage that was showcased at Microsoft’s E3 briefing last month – but with PlayStation button prompts overlaid. Before anyone freaks out: EA will have doctored this footage in order for it to feature on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, and it’s extremely rare that trailers or gameplay clips get re-captured for each individual format. (In this case, you're probably seeing PC footage anyway.)
Of course it looks bad, and the Japanese giant probably should have checked the video more thoroughly before uploading it. Oh well, it’s not the first instance of this happening, and it certainly won’t be the last.

If photoshopped buttons in a trailer are enough to set people off then we really are doomed.
Controversy? I would never have noticed had it not been pointed out and I thought this happened all the time with multiplatform games anyway. Aside from all that the game whilst pretty didn't look anything special just yet
@carlos82 It doesn't happen all the time, though publishers generally do a better job of replacing the prompts.
It's a controversy all of a sudden because... Clicks, maybe?
So this is The Destinivision?
Are you bleeping kidding me?! Something as little as this caused a stir?! Our society, I swear...
It must take a salty breed of person to get excited about this.
Honestly, who is upset by this besides maybe Sony itself and the person that was responsible for this botch job
This defo deserved the 'Think of the children' meme.
I'm not really interested in watching it if it's not running on the PS4 because if you have seen it already via the Xbox E3 showcase then you have seen it already, it's pointless. When it's showcased running on PS4 hardware then I'll check it out. It's misleading in that it has been posted on a Playstation channel yet it is not representative of what to expect on the PS4, anyway the game looks like it has potential and personally the only thing that caught my eye from the Xbox E3 showcase. Hopefully we get some genuine PS4 footage soon.
Don't get the problem??
It is a bit pathetic I think. Not just the 'doctoring' of the video to use Playstation buttons but also the uproar this has caused. I really don't understand why they can't use Xbox prompts if they are using Xbox footage and its been confirmed to be Xbox One X footage - not just by MS but EA too and even Digital Foundry's breakdown indicates that its very unlikely to be a PC version - For a start Frostbite games on PC don't use Checkerboard rendering and other aspects, like the draw distance on the path textures, lack of particle reflections etc are indicative of 'console' settings compared to a PC. Metro was on a PC with comparable Xbox One X hardware.
Anyway, point is, I still think its better to keep the footage as is, be honest its Xbox footage they are 'borrowing' rather than try and pass footage off as running on a Playstation. Its still a game coming to Sony's console but its still dishonest and potentially misleading - like passing off a high end PC 4k 'ultra' settings as a PS4 (or Xbox) game. I would rather see these companies be honest!!!
Meh don't get why people are getting in a tizz over it.
Seriously? This is controversy? Over an icon button?
@Nesstark88 This game trailer probably made on high-end pc with downgrade followed before release (like watchdog).
@get2sammyb They shouldn't replace 'prompts' regardless in my opinion!! Edit the video down so its not showing any 'prompts' at most or just be honest!
I remember buying games back in the eighties for my CPC464 that had images taken from C64, Sinclair etc on the back. There is far too much dishonesty in the industry and mistrust. I would rather see a Sony video state it was using Xbox footage and be honest than lie!!
@BAMozzy This trailer probably made and edited by ea and send to sony. I don't think ea want to make 2 trailer for the same game.
@wiiware Regardless of who made it, its still dishonest! It would have been better just to have kept the Xbox prompts than 'doctor' it to appear to be PS4 game play. It could be EA but I would bet its Sony and them not wanting to put anything that could be 'Xbox' related in their video but its clear its the same footage as seen at E3. EA would just send the same footage out...
@wiiware Yup, I remember when watchdogs released lol I'm happy to say I didn't buy the game what a let down after seeing all that beautiful imagery and atmosphere.
Well I can totally understand why Sony wouldn't want to show a video on their channel that's blatantly advertising their competitors system. The button designs are an iconic part of the consoles branding, even more so for Sony.
That said I'd take absolutely everything shown and said about this game with a pinch of salt for a while yet.
People are so stupid these days. There's games releasing left and right that are broken or sold as half a game with the rest of the content released later as DLC. MS has a complete lack of any worthwhile exclusives and yet the thing people choose to be mad about is prompts in a video. The game is coming to PlayStation, EA doctored the footage itself, there is no controversy here.
The Eurogamer comments section on this is an absolute cesspool of idiots who seriously think Sony are responsible for this "non" issue are think they are on a "sucidal PR mission" god bloody lord!!!
The most offensive thing in the video is the actors pretending to be gamers, and even that's not offensive. In fact, this whole sentence is irrelevant. Go and read somebody else's post.
It is funny but nothing to get upset about
@JoeBlogs Its ridiculous! I know MS are not 'saints' either but the industry as a whole really needs to be a lot more honest! If the footage isn't on their specific system, then either don't say anything but don't alter it to appear as if it is, or be honest about the fact its on another system. Its not as if the game itself won't be coming to that system. They could have edited Anthem down to the parts where there were no button prompts or took the HuD away altogether - although that's still dishonest in my opinion.
I really don't see the issue with multi-platform games being shown running on an alternative platform. Its not advertising or promoting the other platform as the game is coming out on their platform too. Its more dishonest if you are passing off something that may look better on an alternative format as indicative of the visuals on your own platform. That's more likely to have a negative backlash at release when people buy the game and wonder why it doesn't look like they expected it too.
EA and Ubisoft confirmed that Anthem and Assassins Creed were running on Xbox One X hardware. 4A Games confirmed Metro Exodus was running on a PC (albeit with comparative Xbox One X hardware but still confirmed it was on PC). What next, Sony trying to pass off Destiny 2 PC 4k Ultra 60fps gameplay as 'Pro' footage? MS trying to pass off Ace Combat or Monster Hunter 'Pro' footage as running on an Xbox?
Just be HONEST!!! There is too much dishonesty and mistrust as it is!!!
@BAMozzy it will have been EA/Bioware who gave the footage to Sony - we know this because the quality of the footage on Sonys channel is clearer and crisper than on the Xbox channel - plus the Xbox footage is plastered with all the on-screen Xbox promotions.
Xbox have been caught with the same thing via watch_dogs where Ubisoft changed the prompts and gave it to Xbox to upload.
It's not being dishonest or whatever the Xbox fanboys are saying - at this point it's just a proof of concept pretty much - the game wasn't a playable 'demo' - it wasn't even showcased on the x - it was a video on a loop. It could easily be a pre-rendered scene running on a PC emulating what it thinks the final product will be on the X. There was no definite proof that it was on the X other than 1 guy at EA saying so.
You seem to be taking the situation way too personally against yourself. It's nothing, go moan at EA if you think you have been hard done by.
@Nesstark88 After street fighter 5 and no man sky I'm not preordering any game before I read the review, unless it has really good demo (like nier automata), already released in japan (and the reviews is good like persona 5), or a remaster/remake of the game I like before (like crash trilogy or parappa). And naughty dogs game I guess
@BAMozzy I think the rule about trailer is, if it's not playable then it's a fake. Even ME: Andromeda looks good on its initial trailer.
@Turniplord I am NOT taking it personally at all! The Footage was uploaded to youtube as a 4k video without all the E3 Xbox black bar info too. (Just search Anthem 4k if you don't believe me...
It also wasn't 'some' guy at EA thatt confirmed this was Xbox One X footage but Patrick Söderlund, Executive Vice President of Electronic Arts! As stated, its also been broken down by DF who highlighted the CB rendering style, something NO frostbite PC game does and DF believe it to be 'genuine' Xbox X footage too. Its not as if they 'lied' about Metro either and confirmed that was running on a PC at the time...
@JoeBlogs Point is, there really isn't any need to artificially change a button prompt or even draw any attention to the fact it is 'Xbox', PC or PS4 footage when using a 'stock' trailer/game-play for a game coming to that system in the future. Just use the trailer as is!! It does more harm than good to alter things like this and leads to more mistrust...
pretty sure i've seen videos before on playstation store content that had the ABXY button prompts from xbox controllers..
for a multiplatform game, i don't know why they don't just remove the button prompts altogether. it might be the game doesn't have a runable build on PS4 yet, so EA have done an easy cheat to provide footage for the official playstation channel.
still.. not as bad as the time i played at an xbox one battlefield 4 event and the game crashed to windows 7.
Whilst you can levy the argument that this could be misleading IF this is bone x footage; people seriously need to grow up and get a grip on reality.
Im more annoyed that it is always online.
The game looks really good. the outfits always available is a great advantage over the Destiny character switches, and the way players can drop in is also a bonus.
Having pre-ordered Destiny 2, I'm glad Anthem has been given a 2018 release date. It's going to be interesting to see which I spend more time on.
